Shell posts $6.2bn profit on 10:56 - Nov 2 with 1269 views | hoppy | And just after BP had announced quarterly profits of £2.6 billion. You have to congratulate these companies managing to make so much profit, especially in an energy crisis...

Shell posts $6.2bn profit on 11:04 - Nov 2 with 1247 views | nodge_blue | Thats largely due to the Ukraine war pushing up demand for smaller supply and also the Saudis cutting back supply at the same time. Shell sell oil to the market that buys it at market rates. You can argue the rights and wrongs of oil in todays world. But the profit Shell made isnt really largely down to them. Not sure if they are still paying a windfall tax? But even so at least they are a UK company that will be paying corporation tax.

I didnt know that. I was just thinking that 20 percent of 6 billion would be 1.2 billion incoming. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/business/shell-profits-uk-tax-contribution-b2 According to this they paid 1.5 billion to uk and eu. I am only trying to balance the OP and say that as long as they olay fair they will pay taxes on that. [Post edited 2 Nov 2023 11:17]

If that’s an accurate figure it shows how truly disgusting this country is being run.

They did make a £1.5bn windfall payment to the UK and Europe last year but yes, that is correct. £15m in actual TAX.

I feel more aggrieved that amazon made about $250 billion profit but only paid £781m uk tax despite 22 billion of sales in uk. Though that does seem to be because we allow them to offset their factory building against tax bill. Not sure why we do that. Apple made a similar profit. So thats two US companies making half a trillion profit.

In the interest of accuracy though aren’t we comparing apples to oranges here. £5bn is their global profit. The UK profit accounts for approx 5pc, so in effect their taxable profit in the UK would be around £250m? Profits elsewhere will be taxed in those jurisdictions, the media is always disingenuous on this point.

I don't dispute that. Although it's worth noting they do have their headquarters here. I'm personally more concerned that all these profits (and their investments in the UK) are being funnelled back into exploring more fossil fuels instead of helping to transition to greener energy sources.

The HQ is largely irrelevant in our globalised world, most global revenue will be taxed abroad. I suspect the only incentive to them being listed in London is fx/weak Sterling - they can make a tidy return on their USD denominated commodities.
