Yet another TWTD Hive mind question -Medical. 18:22 - Sep 11 with 1240 viewsLord_Lucan

My friend has a medical condition and due to the nature of it and the necessity of speed he wants to take out his medical insurance option.

issue is - the idea of medical insurance is to get quick attention but you need a doctors referral, however, the soonest doctors appointment is two weeks away which is an obvious problem.

Any advice to get around this?

Probably a stupid question as I'm assuming your friend has asked... but... a lot of private health insurance will allow treatment to continue without a Dr referral, depending on what type of treatment required - have they confirmed with their insurance company?

As in GP? Usually if you ring on the day they can triage you in quicker.

No, need a referral.

@Mullet - That's what I thought but I'm not sure the 8 o clock rush is a thing anymore.

Also, the blooming appointment is a phone call so they still won't be able to fill it in at that moment.

Really crazy

not ideal, but a private GP appointment might be the only option (same day appointments for GPs tend to be triaged, so a less urgent case wouldn't be very likely to be seen)

If they already have a diagnosis and a named specialist, a phone call or email to the relevant specialist's secretary might help expedite things.

Otherwise the best bet is the 8AM lottery at the GP.

Fyi , A friend recently received a referral same day after a phone call appointment, it was emailed to him. Although not sure of the precise process/reason.

No idea if they can refer but assume they can do most things:

Never used them so not a recommendation as much as highlighting such a thing exists.

He could use a NHS walk in service. There's one in Norwich on Rouen St. I had to go this Sunday with a perforated eardrum (ouch!) and was seen and treated in an hour. Might be worth a try.

Not sure if it's the same at every surgery, but my GP still has the 8am rush for appointments where you need to be seen the same day.

As someone else suggested, there are walk-in centres but last time I used one of those they didn't have any doctors in, it was only nurses.
