Warsi quits the Conservative Party 00:48 - Sep 27 with 1655 views | WeWereZombies | I always thought she had too much common sense to be a good fit there: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c0e1q5w0q9po 'Former Conservative Party chairwoman Baroness Warsi has resigned from the party in the House of Lords, claiming it has moved to the “far right”...But the Conservatives say she was about to be investigated for allegedly using "divisive language"...She has also been a vocal critic of the party’s approach to allegations of Islamphobia and language used by Conservative politicians, including Ms Braverman...“This is a sad day for me. I am a Conservative and remain so but sadly the current party are far removed from the party I joined and served in cabinet...My decision is a reflection of how far right my party has moved and the hypocrisy and double standards in its treatment of different communities.”'

probably for criticising the likes of braverman/jenrick et al. divisive within the party rather than for society, that doesn't matter/exist apparently

Only really because her media profile was that of a Tory prepared to call out the Tories. Without being a card carrying Tory now, not sure we'll see much more of her.
Warsi quits the Conservative Party on 13:18 - Sep 27 with 1215 views | HotShotHamish | I take it you agree with her stance that the use of the term 'coconut' has no racist connotations? This is the reason she was being investigated. She is happy to call out others constatntly for being racist but could not see the prob lems with her own speech. The term coconut is deeply offensive (as is gammon) but it seems as though many on the left of the political spectrum believe they are OK.

I'm just wondering if it's only Baroness Warsi,s language you find deeply offensive? Or are there any other members of the Conservative party that have said anything else you may have found offensive?

If you knew what the term coconut meant before the recent court case, you're more knowledgeable than me, but the following indicates that the Tory party appeared to be retrying the issue after the court case decided it was not racist, and that cancel culture is alive and kicking on the right. After Warsi's resignation, it emerged that the party had launched an investigation into the peer over social media posts about a court case in which a protester was arrested and charged for holding a placard depicting politicians Rishi Sunak and Suella Braverman as “coconuts”, during a pro-Palestine march in central London. Marieha Hussain was found not guilty of a racially aggravated public order offence on 13 September. After her acquittal, Warsi posted a photo of herself on X drinking from a coconut, wishing Hussain "many congratulations". A Conservative party spokesperson said on Thursday night: “Complaints were received regarding divisive language allegedly used by Baroness Sayeeda Warsi. Baroness Warsi was informed an investigation was about to begin earlier this week. “We have a responsibility to ensure that all complaints are investigated without prejudice.” Warsi then hit back, saying: “A court of law found Marieha Hussain not guilty. Whatever Rishi Sunak and Suella Braverman think of that decision, that is the rule of law and they are not above the law. “I was subsequently asked to delete my public support for Marieha – I refused to do so … The case was due to be conducted in private behind closed doors, I was not told who the complainant was and this is material considering the detail of bad faith practice the court heard about during the trial. "I was also told I could not discuss the matter with others. It was effectively to be a secret retrial of the #coconuttrial … I was not prepared to accept this. “I felt it appropriate in the circumstances to resign my whip and look forward to dealing with these issues openly and transparently in the coming weeks and months.” [Post edited 27 Sep 2024 13:45]

I'm not sure that calling Robert Jenrick a coconut is that racially offensive to be honest, but it might be offensive in other ways. [edit] Apologies, I shot from the hip a bit there. Having read a couple of posts above and listened to the clip from Sounds that Ryorry linked I realise that it was only Braverman and Sunak who were referenced. Still, Warsi's point about a court of law finding no racial slur and the Conservatives setting up their own, secret, hearing subsequently being suspect holds, in my opinion. To be exact on this, I think it (like the term choc ice) references what is alleged to go on inside a person's head too.
