In 1996 they closed our offices, gave us a basic laptop and provided a "drop in centre" to plug it into a telephone line so that we could dial in.
This did not work. For 4 years this did not work.
The computers would dial in, loose connection after 2-3 minutes and we would then have to fire it up again.
What has this got to do with cricket balls ?
Well, we had one on the desk. While we were waiting patiently for the lap top to get going again we would polish one side of the ball.
It was also a convention that when you had been thrown out at a particularly infuriating time you would take the ball and hull it hard against the far wall.
This, while reducing our own frustrations and denting the plasterwork had to stop as the people in the room beyond had heart problems and apparently loud BANGS did not help their conditions.
I still have that ball. Polished nicely on one side. |  | | |

When I was at school I played a lot of cricket and was a decent middle order batsman - good enough to get in the 2nd XI for my batting. But I was a reasonably quick but wildly inaccurate net bowler - and never ever took bowling seriously.
In pre-season I snuck one of net balls home and polished one side using furniture polish. Having never been able to get much/any movement out of a ball I was suddenly moving it a foot or two in the air in the nets. Still not very accurate but I was moving it enough to constantly make the batsman swing and miss when I got it on line. I always made sure no one else got hold of the ball, or could see how shiny it was, and kept re-polishing at home during pre-season.
It was all very funny until I got selected for the First XI for the first game of the season as the all-rounder (despite my protestations that I wasn't a good enough bowler). Then in the game I was thrown the ball by the captain and asked to try and swing it to break up this decent partnership that the opposition was building.
After two overs of dross and having been hit for at least 4-5 boundaries I was pulled out of the attack never to bowl again. Thankfully I scored a rapid 30-40 in our reply and kept my place in the team just for my batting. | | | |
