The way we need to view this result 19:25 - Jan 19 with 1456 views | NeverSayDie | is that it doesn’t matter, it’s irrelevant, it’s behind us now, we don’t have to play the ba5tards again. Literally none of us (I hope) factored in achieving any points against the likes of Man City this season, it’s a shame that we were so far off it today, but that’s where we are, there’s not any comparison that can be made between the two squads, we are ludicrously far apart. However, we only need to be better than 3 teams in the league and we are still well and truly capable of that. It might be utterly depressing to be slapped in the face with the reality of the monumental task this season presents at times, but as I said, we just gotta do better than 3 teams by the end of the season, that’s our only target. I genuinely couldn’t care less if we get beaten 20-0 multiple times this season and survive the drop. Staying up and giving ourselves time and money to build is the only way we can ever hope to regularly compete in the Prem.

There is absolutely no guarantee that we will do anything of note in the Championship next season, if we are relegated. We will lose the best players, we will lose the manager and could well end up doing a Luton, because unlike many other relegated sides, we do not have a nucleus of quality Premier League standard players to prop us up. It is imperative that we stay up this season IMO.

We need to make sure it doesn’t then, easier said than done, but we have to find some wins. Honestly, every way you look at it, everything comes back to recruitment, we don’t have enough quality at this level in the squad and once you get past the starting XI, we are League 1 level, but we still have time to rectify that issue. Although I believe the switch to 5 back was necessary, we play better with the 4 back, but we just don’t have the players to pull it off against Prem teams and we haven’t got the right balance yet with the 5 back, we drop too deep and don’t counter effectively enough as a result, Fulham being an exception, but I think that was largely down to them being pretty poor on the day. We need to sign a 9 and at least one more player in the mould of Phil G, preferably 2 and an experienced CM to help control possession and transitions of play, Phillips was meant to be that man, but he’s just a shadow of his former self unfortunately.

I'm more fed up that we've failed to beat any of our relegation rivals. To stay up we must beat, Saints, Leicester, Wolves, Everton. But I'm not sure we've got it in us .... And can please do something about our lightweight midfield and give Delap some bloody support up front. He can't do it on his own!!

Yeah there is, in the next 2 weeks, Ashton pulls off a couple of signings and we are back to our preferred 4 back, with an extra couple of pacey attacking players and a new 9, results could change fast, its still within our hands 👍
The way we need to view this result on 20:10 - Jan 19 with 1138 views | ITFCSG | Obviously most fans aren't criticising for the sake of doing so but there's a difference watching a team go down with a fight vs the past 2 performances. Sure, Man City were far superior in every aspect but lo and behold we allowed them to run around us in circles and score six without reply. Even Leicester recently managed to limit City to only 2. Brighton second half was even worse because we simply played keep ball seemingly just content to go through the motions. The season now hinges on a number of must win games including Southampton, Brentford, Wolves, West Ham at home and Leicester away. How many would you say we are confident in winning? We struggle to break down and get bullied by lesser teams i.e. West Ham, Palace, Everton and get blown away by the top ones. More signings badly needed asap including a 9 and a CM. McK has a lot of work cut out in the coming weeks ahead.

We’ll sell our stand out players for a considerable profit, and keep the majority of the players that got us up, along with the championships top scorer last year, Sunderland’s best player that’s proved himself at that level, hulls 2 standout players from last year who we know are clearly good enough and a few quid in the bank. No premier league or top European players that think they’re to good for the championship ( see Leeds). I personally think our strategy is the best we could hope for. If we stay up, I think we’ll build from there. If we go down, we’re in a great position to go straight back up and try again.

It’s a kick in the balls alright, but we were due a slap at some point and if it’s Man City, or Liverpool, it’s largely irrelevant, we might as well be in different leagues to them. It was disappointing not to pick up some more points against the teams around us early on, but even they have far better squads than us and where they may have lacked in quality, they made up for in huge, streetwise athletes, who have been premier league players for some time. I do genuinely think that if we could start the season again now, we’d have more points by this stage, it was a steep learning curve and I genuinely think a lot of the players have improved and we definitely don’t make the same number, or same kind of naive errors we were consistently guilty of in our first 10 games or so, so I see improvement, we just need some more quality added.

Out of the two games, I was far more concerned by the second half against Brighton, that was something we just don’t see this squad do, they capitulated, injuries and drop offs in form are one thing, but when players are mentally beaten, that’s a tough one to recover and today will not have helped in that regard. There are no easy games in this league and I’m never confident going into any of them tbh, just hopeful that we turn up, because if we do, we at least have a fighting chance. As you may have seen from my persistent moanings during the match today, I think McK has to accept a large amount of blame for the result, I think his choice of who and how to play down the right side was utterly wrong and even when it was proving catastrophic to the team, he did absolutely nothing to rectify it. McK doesn’t have the squad he would like for the level, granted, but much like the players, he too is on a steep learning curve and I think he could have done more today to stem the tide, unless of course, several of the players you’d imagine him bringing on, were in fact unfit to play and simply in the squad for numbers 🤷♂️

They do seem to have a particular mindset with regard to signings and you’re probably not wrong, though I think we need more of a balance and a couple of older heads wouldn’t be a bad idea for this group, we need a couple of experienced players and another leader would be good, the likes of Matic et al wouldn’t be a bad sort of player for us.
The way we need to view this result on 21:02 - Jan 19 with 796 views | stonojnr | Agreed in principle, but the only thing I'm worried about with such a result is the players confidence drains, and we've gone a bit headless chicken mode following goals in the last two games, which results in more goals against and the games gone then. It would have been an upset to get any result other than a loss today, but the manner of the loss, and the reaction of the players to it is key. Because the next home game we have to compete for the whole game, we lose that and it could trigger an epic collapse, and that game might be off the back of another big loss at Anfield. So it's critical not to just dismiss it as well noone gives us a chance against Man City so what does it matter, we need to hit Southampton hard, strong & confident. If they score first...
