Anfield Road stand…. 08:47 - Jan 26 with 1925 views | ITFC_Forever | Clever planning and common sense has made the concourse behind the stand one of the most spacious around. They’ve built up and over the old stand that was built in the 90s so that what was Anfield Road is now inside the stadium along with the framework of the original stand. The stadium itself has expanded enormously since I last went there in 1992, the new Main Stand is enormous as well and given the enormous history they have, they’ve made good reference to it as well. The Hillsborough memorial is now in a place where people can sit and reflect. Saw a fan sitting there alone in his thoughts and wondered how it had impacted him both then and all the years since. The area around the stadium is going through some regeneration, the rows of terraced houses that used to be behind the Kop have now be knocked down and more modern housing built in its place. We parked about 1km away and went to the Flat Iron, with a barmaid whose accent was so thick you could cut it with a knife, had a good chat with some locals plus listened with amusement at the range of accents from all over the UK, Ireland and Europe we could also hear. Then on the way back had a “sausage dinner” from a chippy cum Chinese which was an enormous pile of chips, two sausages, mushy peas and a choice of gravy or curry sauce all for an incredible £6. Got back at 11 as we had to divert via Duxford to drop one of our mates off. [Post edited 26 Jan 10:45]

Can see us replicating the design and how they managed the build to make sure we lose as few seats as possible during the rebuild. Would be nice if it came with some regeneration of the surrounding area as well!

The car park between the Cobbold Stand and Axa is supposed to be getting a new swimming pool and multi-story car park built on it…. But haven’t they been talking about that for years?

Most of what they’ve done wouldn’t be possible with the Cobbold. I’m sure we’ll look to build as much as possible behind it before we knock through, but eventually the Cobbold will be totally demolished. Unlike the Anfield Road stand which pretty much remains in place as was but they’ve built behind and up. The result is decent space underneath with excellent facilities, including the fanzone. It is potentially something we could copy with the west stand though.
Anfield Road stand…. on 09:22 - Jan 26 with 1586 views | witchdoctor | spacious is an understatement….never been in a ground which affords so much room..even providing seats for us old gits who need to rest our weary bones….dunno what most away fans think of the cramped concourse areas of the cobbold…..walked all the way round the ground and was knocked out by the sheer size of it….Ive been to all the ‘big’ grounds …CITEH…SPUDS….ARSE etc this season but was more impressed with Anfield than with those..maybe it’s because of its more traditional layout… [Post edited 26 Jan 9:32]

Thinking about it, Liverpool did the same with the old Kemlyn Road stand, which is now the Sir Kenny Dalglish stand, the base is the same stand as it’s always been, but the top tier was bolted on. See also our Churchmans and West Stands.

I agree about the traditional layout. It is still a football ground not an enornodome. I even thought the gigantic new main stand was done really well. There's still a nod in there to the traditional Archibald Leitch style football stands of yesteryear with cantilevered roof style and sides etc. [Post edited 26 Jan 10:25]

Yep, they’ve developed, but been very mindful to retain the soul of Shankly, Paisley etc. I liked it, probably the best ground in the country, with Spurs second simply because they’ve done it to such a high standard. [Post edited 26 Jan 10:43]

Anfield Road stand…. on 10:22 - Jan 26 with 1280 views | SitfcB | A shame that in the actual stand it’s as tight as anything between the rows because they kept the original lower tier, and put in ‘safe standing’ - when it’s like that they should just remove the seats, although not sure if the whole tier was like that or it changed towards the back to new rows?

Anfield Road stand…. on 10:25 - Jan 26 with 1261 views | Re_User | Very well put, I was shocked as I walked through to the stand, how much of the concourse there was, I queued up for ages at the first concession I found before walking to my block, I then realised there was a very quiet concession opposite the entrance. Very sensible stewarding meant that it was simple to get out too. I had a very odd feeling walking around to the memorial, I saw the same bloke in contemplation, and there were a fair few blokes in their 50’s walking up to the memorial, touching a name and walking off. Really brought home how much of an unimaginable tragedy it all was, more so with what happened afterwards. Despite the result, I came away relatively content. Our second half performance restored pride, and I developed a soft spot for the hosts.

Never been inside Anfield, but have walked around the exterior and felt it's very compact for such a bug ground. Possibly because it's set tightly among terraced streets rather than having the surrounding parking and infrastructure of more modern out-of-town concrete bowls.

Just looked it up, it’s the Survivor’s Bench and was unveiled last April as part of the 35th (!) anniversary. https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/hillsborough-survivors-bench-unveiled-ahead-35t

With Portman road now closed and redevelopment planned for the car park and Town involved in the plans, we may be surprised at how far Town may be allowed to redevelop the Cobbold.

I loved that addition and also that people still leave scarfs, flowers etc and take time to visit it to make sure that even over the years they are never forgotten
