Every day is a learning day. 19:38 - Jan 30 with 2117 views | BanksterDebtSlave | “We had a situation where you had a helicopter that had the ability to stop … You can stop a helicopter very quickly. It had the ability to go up or down, it had the ability to turn. And the turn it made was not the correct turn, obviously, and did somewhat the opposite of what it was told,” Donald Trump said. “They shouldn’t have been at the same height, because if it was at the same height, you could have gone under it or over it, and nobody realized, or they didn’t say, that it’s at the same height … It could have been 1000ft higher, it could have been 200ft lower, but it was exactly at the same height and somebody should have been able to point that out,”

Here’s hoping his pilot follows this sage advice next time he’s flying Donald over the crocodile-infested water hazard near that tricky par 5 at the fourth. [Post edited 30 Jan 20:41]

Is it? In busy airspace over a lit city at night? I am sure what actually happened will become clear in time. Was it significant that the military helicopter was on a training mission?

Doesn't automatically imply they were novice aircrew. Even experienced military fliers are constantly practicing drills and routines. Could have been on their way to a training area, rather than actually training at the moment of impact. Pilot with experience of flying into that airport interviewed on the radio earlier said that normally commercial 'planes fly along one side of the River Potomac and helicopters fly along the other, avoiding the exclusion zones around the Capitol, White House, etc. But the aircraft, being sent onto runway 33 (rather than the longer runway 1), had to swing across the river (to the helicopter side) in order to line up. Thus setting up the risk of a conflict.

The helicopter was instructed by ATC to pass behind the 'plane*, but appears to have turned towards it instead. * Which, as it's decending to land, has limited maneuverability.

They may have done exactly what they were told to do, but just got the wrong plane. Trump has no way of knowing. Helicopters are more manoeuvrable though*, I’ll grant him that. *Unless piloted by an Hispanic person, obviously!

I think that is the most likely scenario, that they were watching the wrong 'plane. There were two others coming in close behind and on what seems to have been the more usual line to runway 1 (largely parallel to the helicopter's path). As opposed to AE5342, which had been sent to runway 33 and was therefore crossing diagonally from left to right (which might also have reduced the visibility of its landing lights) and descending from above.

Every day is a learning day. on 09:41 - Jan 31 with 838 views | pointofblue | According to the BBC there was nearly a mid air collision between a helicopter and plane 24 hours before the crash. "Just 24 hours before the deadly mid-air collision over the Potomac, another jet had to abort its landing at Reagan National Airport after a helicopter came close to its flight path, according to air traffic control audio. The incident - which has been reported by both the Washington Post and CNN - occured when Republic Airways Flight 4514 was approaching the airport's runway 19 on Tuesday night, when air traffic control warned of a nearby helicopter. “There’s a helicopter over Georgetown [a district of Washington DC], northbound at 300ft,” the controller informed the flight, according to audio from LiveATC.net. Within moments, the commercial jet initiated a right turn away from Reagan National Airport, data from FlightAware, a flight tracking site, shows. “We had an RA, Brickyard 4514 is going around,” the pilot can be heard saying, referring to a Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) resolution advisory. The jet returned to land at Reagan National Airport at 20:11 local time on Tuesday." https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cy7kxx74yxlt

Indeed. I'd say it's very unlikely helicopter pilots were practicing over/around a commercial airport.
