For all you runners out there ... 08:26 - Feb 14 with 1058 viewsEJP

Have a watch of 26.2 to Life: Inside the San Quentin Marathon on iPlayer.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m0027x67/storyville-262-to-life-inside-the

I'm training for the Brighton and London Marathons in April, and did my interval training down the local train station car park last night - running 104 laps of that would be soul-destroying ...

Watched this last night. Was really impressed with how articulate and driven the inmates are

I can't imagine anything like that in British prisons, but would love to think it would be possible

Good luck with Brighton and London. Have you got a time in mind? I did a couple of ultras last year so i'm sticking to the shorter, faster stuff this year. Also a bit more of the fell running series up here in North Yorkshire

Yeah, me too and it sent me down a rabbit hole to see where they had ended up. Tommy is still there but there's a big campaign for his release.

Marathons - finish is the target! These are marathons 8 and 9. I DNF marathon 7 (Brighton) last year as I was all over the place mentally, so this is my redemption ... Following the CooPah app running plan, which is really helping.

All the best with the fell running - one thing I couldn't do! I went a over t on a 10km round Mistley after tripping on a tree root and screwing my knee. I then walked a guy back for the last mile who also tripped on a root and went head first into a tree ...!

Yeah, it can be pretty brutal. I rolled my ankle badly at the top of a hill near Mytholmroyd during a fell race and fully understand why they make you carry so much kit now. Almost froze to death up there!

Hope the training goes well! I'll check out CooPah when i'm next training for something big

Thanks will check that out, there's some gruesome races out there especially in the Ultra world. Check out the Tunnel for real hardcore mental insanity!
Good luck for your marathons

Drop me a PM if you do and I'll send you a referral code for a 2 week free trial.
It is a paid app, and I did a 3 month set for £29.99.

I've read a few things about the tunnel, and no, you're fine ... I'll skip that one!

Sing Sing was my favourite film last year - well worth a watch, tangentially related.

The tunnel is batsh*t. Similarly the backyard ultra (run 4 miles every hour, non-stop, until last man standing). All time record at c4 1/2 days. Bonkers

Highlighting crass stupidity since sometime around 2010

Good luck - both of those are awesome marathons though the bit round the power station at Brighton (presume that is still part of the route) is a bit soul destroying - save something for that as no crowds and about 18 miles or so. Coming out of there it's straight onto the prom, quite narrow and packed with people.
London is London- incredible experience. Done it five times now and would happy plod it again

Brighton have removed the power station bit, finally! It now double-backs along the sea front and the residential street party bit has been extended. First time I did i hi-fived this guy waving a football rattle as we hit the prom, only to realise 200m further on it was FatBoy Slim!

I've done London twice and looking forward to this year's.

I'm considering the Backyard next year for my 50th, I'm confident I could do the 24hr/100 mile mark( i have previously ran ultras before).
The biggest one here in Spain though has about 250m of elevation per lap which is silly and unnecessary!

Why not combine the two...
