It may not surprise those who know me that I am terrible at DIY. So I have a question.
All of the doors and the stairs banister in my house are oak and varnished, and I want to paint them white, as the oak doesn’t really go with the rest of the decor. What is my best option here?
Sand and repaint?
Paint over varnish?
Get new doors?
Also if I did it myself I would probably remove a load-bearing nail and collapse my house, so any Ipswich recommendations welcome.

100% sand to reduce the varnish layer(s), prime and repaint , probably with 2 coats for best effect. |  | | |

Of course it depends on the state of the doors and banister. But as most say if they are in good order and unless you are unhappy with the design of the doors then sand down. I'd recommend wearing a dust mask. Prime and then gloss. Use a rougher grit sand paper to start with then a finer one. Fill in any imperfections with wood filler and sand back before priming. | | | |

When I've done this for people, tend to sandpaper (to roughen up, not smooth, something for the paint to grip). Then apply a coat (or two) of heavy-duty primer/sealer (such as Zinsser Cover Stain or BIN). Finally undercoat and paint in white.
It's a lot of work. With the doors, may actually be quicker/cheaper to replace. But a lot less messy than trying to remove the varnish, especially if it is old. |  |

Thanks all, really informative as always. This is the thing, I’m minded to just replace them entirely.
