Not that controversial - a few people have been saying it. Delap is clearly the better player, but Hirst brings players into the game more, and fits our overall shape. But that’s to be expected as he’s older, and we’ve built the team around his style for the last 2 years.
You’ve got to play Delap though, because of his goals and talent. Hirst is a more than capable stand in though, and I would have started him more during his lapse in form. |  |

For me it's not that Hirst is better than Delap - that's clearly not the case. It's that our shape is more refined and effective with Hirst playing the role he is so good at.
Enciso hasn't scored for us until today - and if Delap is there instead I don't think he does today either. | |

My point is that all our front players who have played the most (Omari, Delap, Enciso, Clarke) are very much individuals. At least ten times every game this season poor decision making from the front players sees a chance break down.

Hirst was brilliant for the first goal. If he had started instead of Delap all season he would have fewer goals, but I think the team overall would have about the same number. |  |

I agree. It was the same when Hirst was out injured last season. Though Moore had a better goals to games return, we were still a better all round team with Hirst up front. | | | |

I think Hirst has qualities that Delap does not, and I like Hirst a lot, but I wouldn't draw too many conclusions based on the fact that we happen to have taken our chances today. It is said that Hirst brings people into the game far better, but let's get real, Chelsea have had 3 times as much of the ball. That is poor. We're in front because Enciso and Johnson took chances (assisted by each other). Not because of Hirst. |  | | |
