Gulf in class 08:23 - Apr 21 with 863 views | Chrisd | A term often used to compare us to other clubs in the EPL, but looking at that first goal yesterday that was nothing to do with the calibre of player or our quality, that’s simply rank poor defending which we’ve been guilty of a few times this season. I scratch my head sometimes why we don’t go out and close players down, we simply stand off them and let them shoot. You could argue the 3rd goal was similar too.

He seems to have a similar weakness to Walton, in struggling to get down to low shots. Better all round keeper, undoubtedly, but often beaten with low shots.

Obviously our players are still more than capable of just messing up, but I think the base level puts so much more stress and strain on the players and their decisions that isn't directly apparent.

Over commit or dive in and those players will just walk round you, it's too easy to suggest we were just standing off them. We were just afraid of them, rightly so! And the third goal* is a joke, we have two players throwing their bodies at it and it takes a dodgy deflection of both of them. That was just lucky. *Fourth goal [Post edited 24 Apr 8:47]

Gulf in class on 09:50 - Apr 21 with 577 views | Guthrum | The moment we go to close a player down, they pass to someone else*. Being on the back foot, we do not have the positioning, superior reactions, speed and athleticism to intercept. Shifting the defence to face the new ball carrier creates a temporary weakness, maybe an opening. By standing off a bit, the ball stays in the same place, slowed down, while blockers and interceptors can get into position. But it does leave us vulnerable to bursts of acceleration. * Sharper footballing brains, quicker reactions and better team-mate positioning than at lower levels.

Simple mechanics. When springing up or sideways, the goalie is braced against the ground and can therefore generate much more acceleration than the mere pull of gravity when dropping down. The taller they are, the further to drop and the longer it takes. There will be other factors - visibility, reaction time and flexibility of the 'keeper's joints, but they count in both up- and downward cases.

It’s completely valid, that’s basic defending regardless of the level, sorry we can keep making excuses that wasn’t great and Morsy and O’Shea were both in close proximity, he shouldn’t have been able to get a shot off there, the third too there’s little attempt to close Trossard down either. I think you’re thinking of the 4th. [Post edited 21 Apr 11:31]

Imagine the reaction if Muric hasn't moved to a shot that was really close to him.
