Yes, they are genuinely clueless at times.

What’s worse is that the assistant ref is that side so should have had a decent view of it yet he doesn’t tell the ref it wasn’t actually a foul let alone a yellow. Surely their job is to assist not rubber stamp and double down on every wrong decision made by the ref!

That ref (and VAR) were hopeless.

Casermio studs someone in the chest, not even a yellow card.

Evanilson slips a bit and tackles someone.....
Red card.

One thing I've noticed this season alot is the assistant refs are little more than someone who simply holds the flag for the game, they might as well give it to the ballboys instead for how little decision making they actually do. The ref decides everything for them the assistants just seem to be there to agree with it.

I am amused when the ball goes out for a throw-in, the assistant doesn't have a clue so they keep their flag down until the referee makes a decision & then the flag goes up immediately, in support of the ref's decision.

Could this be part of the issue? I’ve always understood referees typically do a stint as an assistant before they step up to the level. If assistants are not having to make any decisions, and I agree with thee above at that level they are not, then is it any wonder they’re clueless when they step up to ref.

It used to be that refs were trained for moving up a level by initially being a linesman at that level, but with full time professional officials, that may have changed.

The rules used to be that you could assist one level above your referee position. That still exists lower down the referring pyramid, but you can now opt to solely concentrate on either referring or assisting. Those in the PGMO groups only do one job and will have generally done so for years before promotion.

This is where VAR is annoying and should be used better in my opinion.

As we saw with Tuanzebe at Aston Villa away, he got a ridiculous yellow card when it wasn't even close to being a foul never mind a booking. He's then walking a tight rope and gets a (legitimate) second yellow card which then can't be reviewed or overturned. If we have the technology and the referee is giving blatant advantages to one of the teams then something has to change. A yellow card should be overturned as and when it is as ridiculous as those incidents.
