For the love of God, avoid Star Lane, Grafton Way etc if in Ips on 13:14 - Jul 5 with 492 views | Zx1988 | It's the same here in Norwich. Lots of areas of congestion being 'fixed' by the addition of bus lanes. The buses get to avoid the congestion (and taxis, for some unknown reason), but everything gets made worse for everyone else by the removal of one of the usable lanes. I get and agree with the intention to try and increase the use of public transport, but there's no flip-side to it. Public transport isn't being made more appealing, it's just driving that's being made more and more inconvenient. I can't speak for Ipswich, but I can't see that happening here in Norwich, what with buses being privatised and run by First.

As you mention, other towns/cities suffer as well. I hear that Colchester isn’t that great traffic wise.

If you have really good park and ride schemes it can transform a city centre. I was in Oxford this well and although driving to the park and ride was a nightmare at rush hour, the journey into the City on the bus was really quick and there was barely any traffic in the centre. It was so calm and peaceful (for a city). I’m sure planners deliberately make it difficult for drivers to try and force people into public transport. But you’re right - that’s only any good if public transport is reliable, regular, quick, reasonably priced, etc.

Oxford is ok outside Uni term time and absolute carnage during term time. The council hate motorists so they've created multiple LTNs so that the radial roads are gridlocked thus defeating the object of reducing pollution. They are now consulting over 5 traffic filters to charge motorists just to drive on roads not in, but near the city centre. [Post edited 5 Jul 13:50]

That's spot on. Norwich is really well-served for P&R for a city of its size (six sites) but it's so poorly run; fairly infrequent buses, poor opening hours, and charged per person rather than per car, meaning that once you've got a car load it's cheaper to drive in and park.

That’s a fair point. It was a visit day, but still out of term.
