Pet hates with grammar and 'eggcorns'/malapropisms 12:14 - Jul 19 with 2164 viewsHugoagogo_Reborn

Grammar:
'could/should/would of' instead of 'could/should/would have'
'His' instead of 'he is' or 'he's'

Eggcorns/malapropisms:
'Pacific' instead of 'specific'
'Heart rendering' instead of 'heart rending'

Your turn. 😊

There/where etc...

One for the musicians ;-) : Squire... it's literally written on the bloody headstock!

Please send it to MYSELF... MYSELF and my mate went into the pub... YOURSELF is an illiterate tw@t

And this post from earlier, asterisks for emphasis, which makes my eyes hurt:

"If we hadn’t *of* gone down last season what players would we *of* got rid of/kept
What sort of signings could we *have* achieved with another premier league season ahead of us?

Just pure fantasy of course, still think Delap would *of* gone albeit for a higher amount."

And no, I haven't had enough coffee OR sleep.

I love a malaprop

Or even a mis pronounciation

My Gran, bless her Soul, used to shop in Bugdens

And a very dim former workmate used to go into Dillions for his daily newspaper

Winds me up how young people seem to omit the word ‘to’ quite regularly.

I’m going Starbucks. No you’re not, dickhead. You’re going to Starbucks.

People writing loose when they mean lose.

The word ‘literally’ being misused.

Poll: Does Ipswich need a Northern by-pass ?

And when they get there they ask if they can get a coffee. No, you can't just climb over the counter and help yourself.

Any old excuse to show this again though ....

Poll: Who do you blame for our failure to progress?

Done used instead of did drives me nuts and seems to be used increasingly.

"Courtesy of" instead of just "courtesy".

ie, "Photographs courtesy ITFC"

Maybe an American adoption. ie, "write me when you arrive"

I remember about 35 years ago (probably during World Cup 1990) seeing a letter to a newspaper in which someone had written something along following lines.

"To conjugate "done good"

I done good.
You done good.
He done good.
She done good.
The boy Lineker done good."

"Outside of" rather than "outside".

I think the former is an Americanism.

revert back

Really annoys me, that one. Use one, or the other, but not both together

More and more people say 'generally' when they mean 'genuinely' - eg - "I think Ipswich will win the league, and I generally mean it".

Thorpedo

'Over' rather than 'more than' when talking about a figure.

Using numbers rather than writing the number out for numbers ten or less. I am forever correcting this in reports and really frustrates me

At risk of sounding like William Rees-Mogg I deplore the modern usage of ' beg the question '.

We had a lovely Sikh gentleman managing one of the local Costas. If someone said 'Can I get a cappuccino' he would say 'We'll get it, Sir. You just drink it.'

Aks instead of Ask.
What is so difficult about saying the word 'Ask' properly, it's 3 letters.
