It was finger and toe nails, and a superstition my mother was very insistent on.

And as my mother was brought up a Presbyterian, the following may well be the reason.

"This superstition likely originated in societies that observed a strict Sabbath, where Sunday was reserved for rest and religious observance. Cutting nails was considered a mundane task, potentially involving sharp tools, and therefore discouraged on a holy day."
