| Formation last time in PL 19:03 - May 11 with 1048 views | EssexBloo | Towards the end of the season were we playing 3 in midfield with 2 number 10s? If so, some of our recruitment might be aimed at that slight tweak. | | | | |

No because we never played it

What will be interesting is if KM has learned from that season You can absolutely play with a pivot. But youve to have a heck of a side to do it If you havent then that midfield needs a third man in it.

I dont remember enough of the detail because we conceded goals of all sorts Early in the season we seemed to be naively caught either in possession or GK blunder or on the break often from the right side There were many times i remember teams moving our 2 midfield holders around and scoring from a decent shot outside or inside the 18YB Then other teams seemed to put loads of crosses in which we didnt deal with adequately Conclusion: We were out of our depth all over the place defensively GK Defenders Midfielders and Wide midfielders losing strong possession high up the pitch too often I do think defending with three midfielders could have cut out some of that counter press but the three at the back seemed to sure up the actual holes in the defence then limit us going forward. Big decisions for KMcK, and it might not be one thing. I think better players physically are a significant part of the fail last time, we dont know this time but likely baseline is physicality durability with the technical capacity in hurt teams in the final third. No surprises there! We also need to address clinical part of goal scoring to have any chance, replacing the goals that Delap scored last time probably doesnt come easily because he had a blinder for a relegation fighting team similar to that of Strand Larsen at Wolves in the same season. Target ~40-44 points anything more will be glory days!

| Formation last time in PL on 08:32 - May 12 with 483 views | Churchman | We played nobody in midfield at the end of the season, or much of the rest of it come to that. Maximum 20 mins in, whoever played, they collapsed onto the defence. It’s why we were so uncompetitive second half of the season. Sam was fine in DM role before his legs began to go (for EPL level), Phillips and Cajuste offered absolutely nothing, Phillips was half a yard off the pace when he did play and Jens is painfully limited. Heading, tackling, tracking, shooting, robustness, 90 mins - not for him. Good control running with the ball and looks good doing it, he’s the man. I think we need a bit more. The spine of a team has to be right to stand a chance. We didn’t really have one bar Delap up top. This is why I’m happy to leave the defence alone, bar the odd addition, as it’s significantly better than two years ago and most important, settled. We have Matusiwa and he is easily good enough for that level. It’s what sits in front of him in midfield/CF that strength is needed in my view. | | | |

I also feel like we conceded an insane amount of cut backs from both sides. One ball down the line to take out our full backs and then a simple cut back and their would be an opposition player free all the time because we didn't track the runner. We have conceded a few goals like that this season as well. I do like Jacob Greaves but I think he has a problem with defending low balls across the box. Aways seems to be a yard off and I think that might stop him from being a starting premier League defender for now. Still has lots to work on. [Post edited 12 May 8:49]
