Why didn’t the defender just boot it out? Why have so many modern players lost the ability to apply common sense?

Typical Japan performance really. Start at 100mph then slowly fizzle out as the game progresses.
That defender did well to win the ball but then dallies with it and gives it away. So frustrating.

Tough on Japan to get Brazil so early.

Especially when you have the likes of Algeria v Switzerland and USA v Bosnia in this round.

Think he was trying to but slipped and scuffed it. Brazil had the composure to pick the right pass and it was a very good control and finish from Martinelli. Still had loads to do.

TWTD CP. Evans Out.

All designed for the big teams to get as far as possible the easiest way though isn’t it.

Should draw the games out of a hat after the group stages and not have it preempted.

Well it's my favourite 'Monday morning quarterback' spouting his professional take over an ever-expanding gut.

Your logic runs backwards.

The bracket rewards group stage performance, top your group and you earn a marginally easier first knockout tie. That’s not favouritism, it’s basic competitive principle. Finish second, face a harder test. Performance has consequences.

Pure randomness sounds democratic but would make the group stage almost meaningless. A dominant group winner could immediately draw the tournament’s toughest opponent while a team that barely scraped through gets a straightforward path to the quarters. That’s not fairer it’s just chaotic.

The more logical argument actually sits earlier in the process: the seeding system for the group stage draw, done months before a ball is kicked, is where commercial interests genuinely do shape outcomes. By the knockout stage, the structure is doing exactly what it should. A hat wouldn’t level anything, it would just randomise who gets lucky.

Agreed. Would’ve beaten either of Canada or SA last night.

it was coming all 2nd half though, for sure painful to lose a game so close to...well another 30mins of extending the pain even longer, for no doubt the same inevitable last minute result.

or would it have made a difference had they got to penalties and still lost ?

the played to the best of their abilities, and should feel proud of holding out one of the favourites for the tournament for so long, so effectively.

But you cant keep inviting pressure like that with chance after chance at goal, because eventually the ball wont get cleared properly, or it just fails to one of their oppos attackers who hits it instinctively for a change and scores.
