Assuming the following come January...:

We're picking up points at basically the same rate as now - getting draws and wins against bottom half teams, losing to top half teams

We're in the relegation scrap but by no means doomed.

No significant injuries

What type of signings would you go for? Squad depth? Starter? What position(s)?

Back up LB.

Also potentially upgrade any of Furlong, Kipre and Akpom.

I trust all three of them so not desperate. If Akpom keeps impressing and playing well then he's a great third option.

We don't need much if we are lucky with injuries. I'm sure we will get 1-2 by then though.

Not to be a pedant but if we're picking up points like we are now (1.5ppg) then we'll have a nice cushion to the bottom 3 by Jan, probably 10 points or more.

With no significant injuries I think if its not broke don't fix it. If anyone becomes available who we like the look of it would be worthwhile, but not too much change for me in that scenario. Keep our powder dry until the summer and look to move on a number of the fringe players - Ogbene, Szmodics (done), Palmer, Johnson, Kipre, Taylor, Mehmeti, Nunez, McAteer, Furlong etc. Got to be £35m+ worth of player there if we can trade them well, and bring in 5 or 6 big signings to take us on another level (if finances allow).

I think balance of squad wise you'd probably look to offload one of the senior keepers and maybe bring a youngster into the fold. At the back I think we are a full back short if Outtara is going to start regularly on the right and so probably a left back to back-up Davis (or maybe look to move Kipre on, sign a centre back and use Greaves as a utility man).

Midfield I expect maybe two of Matusiwa, Nunez and Taylor to have the potential to move on. That being said it's probably hard to sign a quality upgrade to be third or fourth choice so not sure this is a desperate need.

Ahead of them you'd look to move on Mehmeti and McAteer for sure. I think right wing looks the obvious area to buy a good player to me.

Upfront looks a set - only really make a splash here if you find a no brainer but I don't see that sort of player falling to us.

We wouldn't be in relegation scrap though if we are picking up points as the same rate as now, we would be on 27 points this calendar year and it would be an absolute disaster to go down at that point.

Would need about 0.5 PPG to stay up!

I think we've got to move on players first.

And we might have to move on a better squad player because it's just easier. I don't like Matusiwa not getting minutes, because he's too good to not play. I can see him going through the door.
And it depends on the development of SWE... if he's not getting minutes, he needs a loan. If we can possibly offload Nunez and Mehmeti... maybe bring in an upgrade at 10.
And maybe a FB. Outarra can play left and right... so an attacking FB ( upgrade on Furlong) .
And McAteer. Right winger if we find McAteer a home.
Still too early. But FB, 10 and RW I'd look at upgrading. Our CB's are not injury-prone so I'm not sure we need a 4th. And Furlong- at a push - can cover.

Agree with most of that except Matisuwa and SWE.

There’ll be times through injuries/suspensions when we need another good midfielder and Matisuwa is just that. He hasn’t been getting minutes cos he’s been recovering from surgery in the close season. Really can’t afford to let him go,

With SWE he’s still young and learning his trade. He’s going to be a top player. Better that he learns his stuff here in the PL than go out on loan lower down. He’ll get minutes during the season and already seems to be a much more rounded player than last season.

All this imho obviously

Better to stay silent and be thought a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubt

Think we’ll have to move players on first before we bring in.

I’m not sure what the point is in bringing in squad players. Might as well keep the fringe players here as at least we know that they all put in a shift.

Think at the end of each transfer window, we should be trying to have improved the potential quality of the first eleven.

Yeah you keep Azor, unlikely we get through a season completely unscathed in CM.
