Town Back in For Sunderland Striker
Town Back in For Sunderland Striker
Wednesday, 5th Aug 2009 10:56

TWTD understands that Town are set to make a renewed attempt to sign Sunderland striker Daryl Murphy. The Irishman was close to joining the Blues in a joint £5 million deal involving Dean Whitehead earlier in the summer and even got as far as having a medical at Portman Road.

That move collapsed when Hull City came in for the former Waterford United frontman, but talks between Murphy and the Tigers broke down and he is still at the Stadium of Light. Whitehead subsequently moved to Stoke.

The Hull move would have seen the Black Cats receive a fee of £1.5 million for Murphy, building up to £2.5 million with top-ups and it is likely that the Blues had agreed similar terms with the Wearside club.

The 26-year-old, capped nine times by the Republic of Ireland without scoring, spent several spells on trial at Playford Road during 2004/05 before deciding to join Sunderland — who had recently been promoted to the Premier League — at the end of the season for €100,000, shortly after signing a new contract with Waterford to ensure that his hometown side received a fee.

The 6ft 3in tall frontman or left midfielder was a regular in Roy Keane’s Sunderland side.

corrected!

RK seems intent on playing a 1-4-1-4-1 formation, as his prime intention is not to get 'zero points' from a game. The current bunch of strikers and pseudo-wingers are not likley to fill the sole striker role, so he is looking for someone who can. He knows Murphy, so fingers crossed.

Well, Mark, we were paying £5 million for both Murphy and Whitehead, with Whitehead costing us £3.5 mill, so I doubt we're now going to buy him for £2.5 mil. However, I wouldn't worry too much about the money after some of the catastrophic signings of the last couple of seasons. It's more about squad size for Keane, and with Ched Evans moving to Utd for £3 mil, around £1.5 mil for Priskin and for Murphy seems a snip.

After the rubbish that was served up by our previous manager, I can't believe that some people on here are already moaning about a man who has 2 ITFC games under his belt and won them both. Get behind the manager and the players and SUPPORT your team, if things are looking bad come May 2010 then you might have a right to moan but for now just look forward to the new season!
COME ON YOU BLUES!

I am pretty confident that we have a solid team that can get us there or there abouts come the end of the season!

With Priskin or Murphy, I think that we would actually be able to get there !!!

Roll on Sunday!

Is this fact or paper talk, much rather have Priskin than Murphy, but we do need a prolific goalscorer, not another striker who can't score!!!!

To all those going on about rather having Priskin instead of Murphy. Are you not aware that Roy has said he wants to bring in two strikers and a midfielder?
Well, I'm assuming we have the midfielder in Colback, unless Keane actually wants to buy another midfielder.
And it could just be that we will end up with both Priskin and Murphy (and hopefully by the weekend) just because the Priskin offer was rejected doesn't mean the deal is dead.
It's quite often the case that when a club knows another club is very much interested in one of its players, they will try to force the price as high as they can get. That's business! Unless obviously they're wanting to offload the player and it certainly doesn't seem in anyway that Watford are just wanting to offload Priskin, so they'll keep going for more money.
I think that Priskin/Murphy would be a good combination.

priskin and murphy are both decent enough players who would do ok in the championship and would both score around 10 goals. Obviously I have no idea what roy is thinking but it looks like the team he is putting together is not going to be about creative flair and exciting football but a team that will be very hard to beat home and away which I think is what is needed to get out of this leauge. Yes we do have some creative players in lee martain and owen garvan but most of them are hard working e.g. David Norris, Alan Quinn etc. So if we can get the mix I think we will be there or there abouts come the end of the season

I suggest we ask Huddersfield if they have any spare strikers. I hear there's a young guy with huge potential called Jordan Rhodes

Perhaps we all need to calm down and not react to every rumour that raises its head? One thing that comes out of all this speculation is that it is now obviously b'*** difficult to sign players because everyone is known to everyone, and everyone is trying to get the best financial deal, whether personally or for the club. I have a mass of thoughts on developments, or lack of them, myself: I'm a bit underwhelmed by Murphy, but then why did PL Hull also want him? We have for a long time missed a big strong forward to lead the line. Maybe Murphy is just a smokescreen in the Watford price war for Priskin? Why don't we look more for players from abroad? Etc. etc. Looks as if I'll just have to leave it to the management team, who actually know much more about the ins and outs than I do! In Keano we must trust!

but me and brightblue aren't moaning about the moaners if that's what ur suggesting. We are just simply making a statement to say that they need to get over the sale or Jordan Rhodes. So with ur statement ur now moaning about the moaners who are moaning at the moaners.

Murphy and Priskin, now theres a strike force, besides, look at skysports, apparently Spurs were hoping to sell GIo to a Spanish club, but that has not happened, they are therefore considering a season long loan spell - and guess which club has been linked !!!

Its been said before, but I make no apology for saying it again = In Keane we trust!

I cant see how people can see this as panic buying, Murphy was one of Keanes original targets, the fact that he came for a medical would suggest that he is interested in the move, and you can hardly blame him for at least having a look at Hull who would have offered him regular first team football in the Prem.

So Murphy might not be the goalscoring sensation we all want but he was a regular in the Sunderland team that got promoted, maybe he can do a job upfront which will create enough opportunities for others to score the goals we will need to mount a serious promotion challenge.

I really like the look of Priskin, lots of experience for someone so young, so certainly wouldnt mind him at the club as well. I really think Keane knows what he's doing and what it will take for us to improve, he has identified our weak areas and has so far strengthened well without throwing money away. I hope we can get someone else in before the start of the season but we need to give Keane a chance to get his squad together before anyone starts slating him. Not every buy will be a success, but he has already cleared a lot of deadwood and balanced the side, Magilton didnt do that in 3 seasons.

If we can be in the mix by the Jan transfer window we will be in a stronger position to attract a higher standard of player, and Keane will then have a better understanding of where we need to improve, lets not forget he has only managed us in 2 competitive matches so far, we need to have a little bit more patience and look at the bigger picture.

Please God no! If we're willing to pay AT LEAST 1.5 mill for this guy why did we put in a bid of 1.2 mill for Priskin??

A big target man is someone we need but the absolute priority must be a striker who doesnt go a month or 2 without getting a goal (Pablo) or plays amazing one game and average the next (Stead)!! There are better target men out there!

God, get this season started already. I don't remember so much tension in pre-season, I'm guessing it's cos of the changes and the uncertainty - this ain't gonna be the same team we finished last season with, that's for sure; will Keano play the flowing football we all love or will we see a team with no flair trying to grind out results? Most importantly, would you rather go back to Magilton's rather uninspiring tactics and look forward to more mid table mediocrity?

Hope you'll all be at Portman Road on the 15th (if you can't get to the away games), and put your prejudices to one side, be positive and take the positives (negatives are there to be worked on). Let's not hear a single boo this season!!!

COME ON YOU BLUES!!!

Maybe Suffolk-Roy is after both players.

It seems so logical to me what RK is doing. Remember Rhodes and Lisbie didnt contribute much last season, infact neither did many of our player. Yet when RK starts off loading, many fans start moaning.

I knew last season the outfit Jim had assembled were unlikely to get us promoted. I still think it will be difficult, however the chances are made greater if we bring in players as being mentioned. Strength in depth is what we are after.

How is this good business? He turned us down after we invested time and energy in getting him to the club, showing facilities and then he sods off to Hull.....leave him to rot in the Sunderland reserves.
