Keane: You Won't Play for Me Again
Keane: You Won't Play for Me Again
Monday, 24th Aug 2009 12:59

Boss Roy Keane says that some of the players who featured for the Blues at the weekend are unlikely to play for the club again. The Town manager says he hopes to have a busy week on the transfer front with several players coming in, but departures are also very much on the cards.

Keane said: “There are certainly one or two players from the weekend who are unlikely to play for me again. And I’ve told them that.

“I’m still learning about these players, but eventually you have to make a decision about one or two and say ‘I don’t like what I’m seeing’. That’s not just on Saturday’s game, but the end of last season and pre-season as well.

“You can’t keep waiting on people, you have to say that enough’s enough. I’m not saying they’re not good players, they’re just not doing the business for me.”

Keane says his task at Town at present is not so much about getting promoted as bagging the first league win of the season: "It's my biggest challenge because it's the next one. In your career, as in life, you face different hurdles and we have a big one ahead.

"The next challenge for us is not getting promoted, it's about getting some wins under our belts and if we do that, the rest will take care of itself.

"I was thinking about what we face over the weekend and I'm looking forward to it definitely. I'm relishing the challenge ahead.

"The problem has been for us that we have had to deal with high expectations since we have been back and I've played a part in that. I'm an ambitious person and have talked about taking the team to promotion.

"We have to deal with those expectations, but as bad as results have been, I think we are two or three players away from being a decent side and being back in the mix."

Meanwhile, we understand that Alex Bruce will again be captain when the Blues take on Peterborough in the Carling Cup tomorrow and may continue in the role for the rest of the season.

I think the unfortunate reality is that it's very unlikely RK will let go of players he chose to sign a matter of weeks ago, so the thus-far deadwood Delaney and Healy are probably going nowhere. I wouldn't be too sorry to lose McAuley or Trotter, but I think at least one of Garvan, Stead and Walters will be on their way and whichever it is, this is not a good thing. Still, quality replacements will surely be champing at the bit to join a second-bottom Championship side with fans booing after four games eh? With the right XI picked we can still turn it around, but let's hope the right moves get made sharpish.

Of the starting 11, who can Keane have been talking about?

1 Richard Wright - No. MoM.
2 David Wright - possibly.
5 Alex Bruce - No.
15 Pim Balkestein - possibly.
35 Tommy Smith - too young, surely.
19 Jon Walters - unlikely.
36 Liam Trotter - possibly.
7 Owen Garvan - odds on.
8 Lee Martin - no.
40 Connor Wickham - no.
14 Jon Stead - unlikely.

My money is on Garvan, Trotter and possibly Pim.

I suspect Garvan, Stead and Walters could be players on "the list", as those three have under-performed for me. Lots of you are listing players you don't rate, but that doesn't mean they're not playing to their ability! I think Trotter is unlikely as he's the only central player Roy has really stuck with. McAuley has already had a public vote of confidence. Players signed in the summer would also seem unlikely targets to me.

He can start with his buy from QPR, Mr Delaney. a total waste of space. Also, never convinced by balkenstien. Looks like we brought on his inside leg measurement rather than any ability as a defender. Trotter is tosh as well. I am sure there are others but my eyes glaze over.. By the way, have you not seen Ipswich play before you became manager? How come you are surprised then? We should have gone for Mr Lambert from Colchester instead of a 'headline grabber' like Keane but that decision would require some football knowledge at the club which has been sadly lacking ober the last few years. ... Pleny of 'Headline Grabbing' and financial skullduggery tho!.. Things aren't looking too good but perhaps the manager will flounce off in a strop if Mr Evans won't give him more money..

Byebyesheepshanks, what are your opinions based on. I suggest you stay at home and watch the boys of 81. We have a young hungry manager who is showing the passion which has been missing from this football club for years. Get in to em Keano, up the town

Keane's all talk and no substance. Managers run scared these days : he's not Clough, he just likes to think he is. He will be gone by the Preston game.

Inpantience is a word I never associated with us before but now it looks like we are about to sell/keep out players before we have proper replacements. How many days are there left in the transfer window. How many players will we have left come September?

I hope Roy Keane knows what he's aiming at but somehow this is beginning to look like Doom Town, every move reminds of Cloughie's time in Leeds United.

All Pre Season to do this and get players in. Pathetic

I don't think he's necessarily getting rid of anybody. "Don't believe what he says, watch what he does". He might be looking to see who will come back fighting, self-motivated, raise their game outside of the comfort zone, prove him wrong. We need strong characters and he might be trying to draw them out in extreme ways. We need players who can handle pressure for the future not wallflowers.

& the boys of 91 & Burleys boys from 95-2002 & even a bit of Joe's. It's called tradition. The joy of watching a good Ipswich side. Don't even care if it's in the Championship. It's called watching your side play nice attacking flowing football. It's bringing the kids through & keeping good players who love the area & the club for many years. Not peed off journeymen pro's. It's not in fighting, reigning by fear, talking into any microphone in the viscinity, throwing your toys out the pram after 4 games. Pick a core side, get on with them, build a nice passing team & a good spirit. He's too extreme.

Daleyitfc..........I don't think so.......We have player's who think they are safe and do not have to give 100%. Those days have gone... Delaney , Garvin and Stead.. Over and OUT......

I am getting very worried now..I fear a relegation battle coming this season the squad is poor with no tallent or flair some are to young and others have no passion. Why keep playing wickham he is to young and showed that on saturday. I dont care who he sales or gets rid of the only one with any passion is R Wright and he should be captain not RK friend bruce. I bet Mr Robson is up there looking down and thinking what the hell is going on at my club...

Imagine what it must be like in the dressing room, on the training pitch, on a match day etc etc. Most the players are probably terrified, i really hope RK knows what he is doing, because if not the end result for this season and possibly the future for ITFC could be disasterous

HERE WE GO . I think RK came in thinking he could get good players in on his reputation , he fired the first shot into his foot saying promotion in 2 years ,he came in hailed as the hard man ,but he is whistling in the dark. The beard will soon have to return to hide the blushes .Keano i think ya gonna blow it .

Like everyone, i'm slightly concerned and disappointed by our start, especially following all of the pre-season optimism. Keano's predominantly aggressive approach isn't to everyone's tastes, mine included. However, if we consider that we've come up short every year since relegation in '02, this new style can't be much worse. Although he seems to be alienating some players, he knows better than we do what goes on behind closed doors. Keano's neck is on the line if lazy/complacent/arrogant, over-paid players are at the club and it's in both his and our interests to get them out.

What does surprise me is how Jon Walters' name is being mentioned by some people on here. I was at the Cov game and I thought he was our Man of the Match. I also thought that he was one of the more positive contributors vs Palace. In fact, he as well as Bruce are two of the few players that really seem to care. To mention his name, or that of the just-arrived Priskin, as potential victims of this cull seems ridiculous.

I'd also be sad to see Garvan go. He is class and, with the right support, can still contribute. His performance in the second half vs Palace proves that. Having said all of this, Keane's own under-performing signings (most notably Delaney) are unlikely to be shown the door so early on, so maybe some of those who I believe are valuable assets may indeed be let go. Low point.

a lot of you seem to have very little faith.. i've seen every game so far and had i been in charge i'd very well have told some of them that on those showings they'd be on their way out!
you can't always tell how good your side is until they play so lets do the moaning if Keane still hasn't got it right when the transfer window is shut!
Based on the fact they were taken off so early i would say that stead and garvan must be there or there abouts and mcauley as well, maybe some people we havn't thought of like walters failed to impress
I think he won't let Pim or Trotter go, A) because i think Pim has played well considering how shambolic our defending is i think he has made very few mistakes compared to the others (apart from bruce) and i still think (i know many will disagree) that Trotter has potential to be a very good holding midfielder with the right team around him, he needs games and experiance and B) because they are young enough to develope for another year and i like the way Keane has some faith in our young players (wickham, smith, trotter, peters, pim) so i don't see him selling them

but delany, healy and priskin can go back to you and you can keep the money!!!!!

Well we all wanted change, and Keane certainly seems ready to do so!!! He is a man of his word, at his first press conference he stated that all he asked for was that players give 100%, if they didnt then they would be on their way, some of the players so far just havent responded and taken their opportunities to be part of a team (hopefully) going forward. Whether it is the pressure of the expectations or that they just arent up to the challenge who knows, but if they dont want to play for us then they rightly shouldnt get in the team.

Keane has inherited this squad and it will take time for him to get the right players and have them playing the way he wants. Some of the players he has brought in havent clicked straight away but most have only played bit roles so far this season, so lets all give them a chance to settle in first.

Once we get that first win under our belts I think we will look a different team, I like many think we need a commanding defender and midfielder (Sol and Hamann on a free would be good) to organise the team, which so far has been very young. The championship is always a tight league, usually 15-20 points from relegation to playoffs, so we really dont need to start worrying yet. I think the start of the season will be tough for any club with the amount of change we have gone through (releasing 14 players and selling others - most of which were rightly let go), come January we will be in a better position to judge where our team is at, until then I'll hold judgement. I think Keane has done a decent job so far, even if results havent gone our way, Town needed a wake up call and Keane is ringing the bells of change!!!

If he was to get rid of Garvan it would with out a doubt be the single most stupid knee jerk reaction in the history of football!
While we can all see that Garvan is not in great form currently we also all know what the boy can do and form is of course temporary.
Go ahead Roy and press the self destruction button, might as well do it now as it willl happen eventually.

This is EXACTLY what is needed at our club. The powderpuff approach has been in existence for 3-4 seasons too long.

The common demoninator during our exile has been the averagely talented playing staff.

Time to get rid. Start with McAwley, Garvan, Healy and Delaney. There's a few more I could add like Stead, Counago etc. but I can reserve judgement on those.

I can see why people want garvan out after saturday performance but i disagree I think he sees and reads the game quicker than any1 else. He knows where the runs should be made by other players but some of our players have not got a clue. Yes he lacks pace but his reading of the game is there for all to see. He needs players around him who are on the same wavelength. Garvan is the only midfielder we have or could create things, I cant see Trotter or Quinn playing a defence cutting pass. Although I did think Colback looked good when he came on, he also reads the game very well.
