Shirts Thief Jailed Monday, 14th Sep 2009 13:10
Jamie Underwood, the man who stole shirts and other memorabilia from the statue of Sir Bobby Robson, was jailed for eight weeks by magistrates earlier today.
Underwood, 21, admitted the thefts to magistrates last month, telling the court that he was drunk at the time of the incident and couldn’t remember stealing the shirts, scarves and other memorabilia placed by the statue as tributes to the legendary Town manager in the weeks after his death.

I was waiting to hear that he got a fine, so I'm generally pleased with this outcome.... Just a pity that it wasn't for longer !

should have to spend 8 wks in the north stand with a sign above him telling everyone what hes done and not be given police protection that would sort him out

The fact that most of Ipswich know his name and know what he looks like, means that he will probably be punished far more when he is out of prison than when in it.

Was expecting a fine. Jail time not a suprise to anyone else? Hopefully he'll learn his lesson.

Apparantely, he lives close to the ground on Burrell Road - But what number? I'd put dog doo doo through his letterbox just like school days...

Bizarre. Whilst we can all see what a stupid thing it was to do, albeit when drunk, it is beyond me how the legal system feels the need to put him in jail. There could of been many better ways of dealing with this. For example, community service. 8 weeks of that would put him on the straight and narrow. Yet, instead, we tax-payers have to pay to feed him, give him hot water, and provide him with all the electricity he needs. He'll be out in 4 weeks besides. Perhaps a lap of shame on Tuesday night would have served him better, too!

I think the sentence is about right. Lets not forget there are plenty of Ipswich and England fans in prison!
HampshireBlue added 15:21 - Sep 14
Assuming he has no prior record, 8 weeks is actually a harsh sentence, regardless of how little of it is served. That said, nice to see the justice system imposing the type of sentence many would have wanted.

Interesting punishments - like the dog do do through letter box - respect fellow tractor boy !!!!! When he is released can we use him as a football for the match that would sort him.

I really think there are far worse crimes than stealing a few shirts and scarves left as a tribute and to go to jail for it is utterly ridiculous. Looks like there are a lot of Daily Mail readers about though who jump at the chance to take the moral high ground. Why not save being disgusted and appalled for acts which are really digsuting and appalling?

The streets are certainly a safer place tonight with the discarded scarf thief safely behind bars.

I think the fact that his name has been released and someone will know someone who knows him is a far worse punishment than his jail term. At least he's going to have four weeks of relative freedom from abuse whilst he's in jail.

Gilsey..... I think you'd better get your coat!!!

Why, for thinking that a very minor and non-violent crime doesn't deserve a custodial sentence, and for finding the mob-mentality platitudinal moral indignation is as distasteful as the crime itself undoubtedly was? I'm just stating my viewpoint too.
