Campbell Held Town Talks Last Week?
Campbell Held Town Talks Last Week?
Sunday, 27th Sep 2009 09:03

Town held talks with former England defender Sol Campbell last week, according to a report in one of this morning’s tabloids. Roy Keane revealed his interest in the ex-Arsenal and Spurs man on Friday in the wake of Campbell walking out on his five-year deal at Notts County after only one game.

Speaking about his Notts County exit for the first time in another of this morning's papers, Campbell, who Newcastle and Hull City are also said to be chasing, is confident that he will be able to find a new club before the transfer window opens: "We will just have to wait and see who comes in for me now but I don't think I will have to wait until January. I'm talking to people now to try to solve that."

This may suggest that the 35-year-old’s County contract is yet to be formally torn up and that he can move on loan, while there is also a provision for players to move outside the transfer window if they can show a legitimate reason to the authorities for leaving their previous clubs.

Campbell is unspecific about his Meadow Lane exit: "I knew I would be the club's first big signing but was told I would be the first of many. Names like Roberto Carlos and Benjani were mentioned - now that would have been a statement of intent.

“But, for whatever reason, it didn't happen. And all I will say is that you know when people have money because things happen and they happen quickly.”

Meanwhile, elsewhere in this morning's tabloids, Dwight Yorke says he received a four-letter response from Roy Keane when he commiserated him on his exit at Sunderland.

Dont let your hearts rule your heads here your folks, If Hull (premier league), Newcastle (top of CCC), & Ipswich (2nd bottom of CCC) came calling, who would you decide to sign for!?! (both can offer vastly more wages than us, its not gonna happen)

In fact we probably can afford his wages. Newcastle won't be going in for players at the moment during the financial due diligence going on. And as for Hull - they are a shower of shite with a complete tosser for a manager - Campbell won't go there unless he is intent on Premiership football (which I don't think he is based on his move to NC).

Newcastle proved yesterday they don't need another CB, Colocini and Taylor were pretty good and they have Kizinishvilli too. However, the oompa loompa up north will no doubt go in for him.

After yesterday I think ME will do everything he can to get Campbell or Shittu or both. Balkestein was terrible and Smith is too inexperienced, Bruce needs a quality CB partner with some physical presence.

no all correct suffolk_and_good Sol will want to stay south and close to London and was a known visitor to socialise in Ipswich a few years back....his experience could be vital!

Think he'll do a good job, mind you any decent defender regardless of age could do a better job than what we have at the moment, Terry Butcher anybody?

I'm starting to feel sorry for the Ego that is RK, I'm starting to like some of the changes he's making too. Sol playing for Town may be a bridge too far, but if 2 years ago someone said RK would be manager!

surely we cant get any lower than last nite performance wise, that is the worse i have seen TWO shots on goal not good enough. As a fan the booing of keano is not needed, yes we are all concerned what is going on but giving keano the finger and being in his face is a bit stupid.

i READ SOMEWHERE THAT SOL is dating the heiress to the barratt homes empire and they/she own a mansion in northumberland. hence him wanting to go to newcastle rather than notts co. But newcastle didnt come in for him , as yet.

Bruce needs a quality CB in???? We need to dump this waste of space fast. As much as I agree Pims made some major errors for those goals I would ask where the hel was Bruce??? That first goal by Noland he was in Bruces zone not Pims! The man goes missing and costs us too much. Pims like Smith both have potential and THEY are the ones that need a quality CB to help them improve. I was very noticable that when Bruce went off the defence actually kept their shape better (except for the one goal they scored after Bruce had left.) For Sheffield I would play, Rosiner McAulay (or new CB) Delaney D Wright. NUFC certianly showed us how the game can be played when you have a good defence and the players are confident in that defence.

Chapmanp if you think ME will give Sol £40k a week (wage at Notts C.) you are very much mistaken! We have seen before what happens when you sign players on hugely inflated wages that then upset the ethos of the team (F.George, M.Sereni etc..)

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying we shouldn't sign him, I would love to see someone of his quality sort out our back line, but just think Sol's wage demands will force us out of the market for him. I sincerely hope I'm wrong!!

Not at all interested what Yorke said - we must remember there are two sides to a story.

Campbell - better than McAuley, Pim, Smith and Bruce. Then again many players are!!!!

We cannot afford Sol Campbell - end of. we've never paid anyone £40k a week and its unlikely SC would be up for a Championship relegation battle anyway.

Interesting to read Dwight Yorke's comments. Can't read too much into them, but the team looks disjointed at the minute and we have seen indications of the sort of outbursts that Yorke describes ("some will never play for me again," etc). If RK has alienated himself in the way he did at Sunderland, then it will be very hard for him to turn things around...

Change Ipswich for Hull, and Premiership with league 1, and you're nearer the truth, sadly

I see the notts county website still lists campbell as a current player while the players list has recently been amended to include a player they have signed since campbellgate. This may sugest he is still under contract and available for loan now. Surely it has to be worth a shot, what could possibly go wrong???????

My mate told me on Friday that Sol was at the Belsted Brook hotel last week, personally didn't believe it, but maybe he was there, not that it matters, if Prem clubs want him, surely his going to be going there!

He probably can't play until Jan - and Notts C were paying him £40k................................................ WE CAN'T.
