Scunthorpe Abandon Appeal
Scunthorpe Abandon Appeal
Tuesday, 16th Mar 2010 09:01

Scunthorpe have abandoned plans to appeal against Cliff Byrne’s red card against Town on Saturday due to a lack of video evidence.

The Iron skipper was red-carded for sending Jack Colback to ground with his arm well away from play, and therefore the cameras, during the second half of Town's 1-0 victory.

Byrne faces a five-match ban as Saturday’s dismissal was his third of the season.

Town’s appeal against Damien Delaney’s red card later in that game will be heard at 1pm this afternoon.

Yes I noticed the cameraman missed it on the BBC highlights!

It was a harsh red - I think the player collided with Colback, I didn't see any malice in it.

the fact that he pretty much whacked him had nothing to do with it?

I actually saw it - and to my mind it was an accidental collison. I think I saw somewhere that Colbeck said he wasn't elbowed.

They were both running at speed and looking at the ball and collided.

Sorry AuntieBlue, that collision was no more accidental than Delaney's trip. Byrne deliberately blocked Colback's run and so deserved yellow at least. His elbow was also high but I couldn't say with any conviction that he used it deliberately. I wonder if the referee guessed a little giving a red which could acount for him evening things up with Delaney when harrangued by Scunny players.

Colback got up and said he wasn't elbowed according to David Wright after the game. I saw the way the scunthorpe player went down after the trip. He stayed on the ground as if DD had severed his leg! He was play acting for DD to get a red, glad it was recinded!

He was disgraceful anyway, he should've been booked for time wasting and a booking for that challenge at least as he did block off the run, so either way I feel no sympathy for him!
COYB!

I work for the in-stadium filming at Portman Road, next to the BBC cameraman. It wasn't a case of our missing the Colback-Byrne incident - it took place well off the ball and we are paid to follow the ball, as that's usually where the action is.

Both we and the BBC caught the moment after the incident (Colback had just hit the ground) on the far right of our wide shots. When it happened to ball was in the air near the SBR Stand. So, yes, there wasn't enough for evidence - but it wasn't our fault.

FYI, I can tell you David Wright said at his press conference that evening that he understood Jack had run into Byrne (meanwhile, a Scunthorpe journalist told me he'd seen Byrne purposely elbow Colback). Wright also said the ref sent off Delaney because Scunny players said he'd gone in two-footed and the ref agreed (obviously not true - DD stayed on his feet - and later justice was done).
