Keane: Don't Boo The Youngsters
Keane: Don't Boo The Youngsters
Friday, 26th Mar 2010 08:35

Boss Roy Keane has hit out at fans who booed loan midfielder Jack Colback during Tuesday’s 2-0 defeat to Plymouth. The 20-year-old hit the first defender with a number of set pieces and was subject to the frustrations of some in the crowd.

Keane said: “I wasn’t too happy with some of the supporters the other night getting on one or two of the players’ backs, including young Jack Colback.

“Fans are entitled to their opinions, but Jack Colback’s been brilliant for us this season, head and shoulders our best player, a young man learning his trade.

“He made one or two mistakes the other night, from a corner and a freekick. We want better from our supporters as well.”

The Blues boss said he was happy to take the criticism himself but felt that young players ought to be given more encouragement: “Boo the manager all you want, but get behind the players. I know it’s only a minority, but what if we want him back next year?

“We talk about the club being a traditionally a top football club and our fans have been brilliant, but the other night we spent half our time giving the opposition manager a big reception, we’ve got young players trying to learn their trade, they’re the ones that need it.”

Keane also feels that some of the more established players are given a comparatively easy ride: “One or two of the senior players get applauded while they’re picking on some of the younger players, I certainly wasn’t happy with that.”

The Town manager isn’t surprised that supporters are becoming increasingly frustrated: “In the modern world we all want things yesterday. Supporters are the same. When I first got the job and I said maybe we can do it in a year, blah, blah, blah, and fans were very supportive of that.

”Now they’re probably looking at it and saying ‘Listen, we’ve not seen too much progress,’ and there’s going to be frustration. I’d rather they took the frustration out on the manager, which they can do, but for Christ’s sake support the younger players.”

Keane says his determination to get the Blues promoted hasn’t wavered despite the disappointing season: “It’s a brilliant, brilliant challenge and every day I come in, the more I realise how big the challenge is, but it’s one I’m going to embrace, one I’m looking forward to.

“I could go off and do plenty of other things if I wanted an easy life, but I’ve never wanted an easy life. I didn’t have an easy Tuesday, I didn’t have an easy Wednesday, but I feel a bit better today and I’ll be ready to go at the weekend.”

we werent booing the fact colback was playing poor, we were booing the fact we have had probably the most corners in the league and i cant remember scoring one. we have a very aerodynamic team yet we dont beat first man, im not being funny but for players on high money like leadbitter and colback they should be able to hit, mcauley , delaney or walters head at least 2 out of 5 times. Corners are a pretty simple and fundamental part of training, it hasnt always got to be fitness training, which from what i heard that is all the players are doing.

and if you think another player was counago we were booing then your wrong mr keane, we were booing you for bringing our worst signing yet on for the only player that looked like creating a goal, everytime we are not winning you pile the blame on garvan or counago. why not look at your favourite player walters who has admitted he is not playing well yet he is getting played every game and garvan and pablo our 2 most creative players, in which i think we need on the pitch are being left out too often.

Another thing id like to put into question is how we believe brian murphy is better then both lee barret and wrighty. murphy has put us under pressure from nothing, by a poor kick or poor decision making which i felt was the reason for the first goal, i dont blame delaney too much because he was unlucky.

Very well said by the Manager, my sentiments also, some of our fans are an absolute disgrace, they are not complete supporters, the club is a package, Owners, Shareholders & Benefactors, Management, Team Manager, Coaches, Players, the lot, if you truly support ITFC then you should RESPECT AND SUPPORT THE WHOLE PACKAGE, Roy Keane will, I am absolutely sure, become one of Football's great Managers in a few seasons, I just hope for all of our sakes that he will still be with Ipswich, he is still learning that part of the trade, he is a good decent man, genuine, honest and passionate for OUR CLUB, he has a great history in the game and I regard him as a Footballing professional, he did not achieve what he has achieved by not working hard at it, he is currently working hard at trying to improve the situation at ITFC, maybe more emphasis should be made on the individual performances by the players and the current coaching staff, than continually putting the Manager down, I've seen it too many times, it actually can destroy the very club that we all support, or at least claim to.

Strange how those fans don't boo John Walters after 18 months of mediocrity, not the right type of player for club captain.
We need a leader with the armband, give Grant ago, very very vocal and runs the midfield.

No matter what happens a TRUE supporters always back the club!!

Verdict= Stop the boo's and start singing............. SIMPLES

Yes, SHUT UP al you idiots who think that booing is constructive. We don't need those type of people in the ground, I never boo my own team. I might boo the manager if I fell he isn't doing his job, but never the players. I thought the booing of the Pablo substitution was terrible as well. How many goals has he got this season, for a so called striker its rubbish?
roysthebot, you are SPOT ON! We lack a leader, a Mowbray,Mills,Butcher type to get the lads going. I would think David Wright might be good.

I'm not saying we should boo young players, but when the same mistakes are made week after week with no coaching progress to be seen, maybe we should be booing the manager & his coaching staff......Taxi to Glasgow anyone????

I could beat the first defender when I was 15.

End of the day, Jack is here for experience - He has done very well since he has been here, but it's all part of the game, and I'm sure he is getting paid well to be here.

If the fans are continually disappointed by his woeful set play delivery then I see why they may jeer. I'm not a jeerer, but I see why people would. As Yarmo says, Its not cheap to get into the broken fortress of PR.

Fair point. But Keane needs to sort things out.

Fair comments from Roy. Trouble is sometimes it's a bit confusing what the actual target of the booing is and things can get ambiguous. You can have steady progress and decent results for a few weeks and then it all comes crashing down in one game. We do need some set piece preparation. Maybe some other players would like a kick once in a while. Shane O'Connor put in a decent disguised cross at Watford from which we scored. Mix it up a bit.

I agree with the manager, here is a young lad, learning his trade, and without doubt for me has been player of the season, making a couple of mistakes which given the extreme pressure the team is under to perfom, was excusable, and may i remind you that he has indeed contributed with 5 goals for us which is more than some of the more senior players,ie. norris, garvin, leadbitter, edwards etc, i have watched many game this season and of all the players including leadbitter, colback always gives 100percent. how can we expect youngsters to want to come out and play week after week, when a minority of you want to shatter their confidence, get behind the team and support our club.

Yes, you've paid your money, we all have, but that doesn't mean we can behave like bullies. Who is it that puts these players on the pitch? Who decides who takes the corners? Who decides on the tactics for set play? It's not the players. Colback, and at times Delaney, has a poor game on Tuesday but what is booing going to do other than make them feel like sh..? Keane should have seen that he was having a mare and made a sub sooner.

Keane has a good point. Pablo gets an ovation for just trotting onto the pitch, while Colback gets the bird. Someone behind me was even having a go at Shane O'Connor the other night, which is absolutely nuts.

And, at Watford, some moron in front of me booed Lee Martin before he'd even kicked a ball. This bloke has "been to every away match this season" so seems to think he has a right to boo. No he doesn't.

DrJeckyll added 10:34 - Mar 26
'i pay my money i'll do what i like' so the next time some irritating moron starts booing next to me at a game, i will knock his teeth out, i payed to get in so i can behave in any way i like

If people put as much effort into singing and getting behind the team as they do booing then maybe PR wouldn't be so much like a morgue. The atmosphere is disgraceful at times....the fans seem to wait for the team to perform then start singing, rather than singing to help the team perfrom..It's extremely frustrating....and if you try to get passionate all the yocals just look at you as if you are mad....it's crazy!
By the way, well said RoyTheBoy, yet again.

On Tuesday night there were two idiots behind me who were slagging off Pablo for being lazy and not running enough. The fact that he was the only player who seemed capable of holding onto the ball and delivering any passes seemed to escape them.

Sometimes I wonder.....

Was it not Roy himself saying earlier in the week that Marner deserved a good reception. was he trying mind games which back fired ?

As fans we are entitled to cheer and boo as we see fit. We pay our hard earned money to get entertained and if individuals are not performing they deserve to get booed. If a player made one mistake that can be forgiven, but a repetitive mistake means he's clearly not learning so deserves stick.
Mariner deserved the reception he got - Keane was very complimentary of Mariner pre game comments, now he's changed his tune (just like his team selection this season).
Like alot of people i am warming to the idea of Keane heading north to Glasgow

Never could understand the blind loyalty to Pablo. The striker who never scores, when most agree that our problem has been lack of goals. Waste of space get rid
