Wickham Nets Again for England
Wickham Nets Again for England
Friday, 2nd Apr 2010 06:59

Connor Wickham netted his second England U17s goal in two games as his side defeated Slovakia 2-0 at Northampton last night to qualify for the European Championship Finals with a 100% record from their qualifying group. The 17-year-old bundled the ball home from close range in the second half after the Slovakian keeper had parried.

Wickham, who was winning his ninth U17 cap with the goal his sixth at that level, also scored in Saturday’s 4-0 victory over Sweden but was left out of the team which beat Malta 5-0 on Monday.

The striker is set to return to Portman Road today and he is expected to put pen to paper on his first professional deal with the Blues soon after, despite interest from a host of Premier League sides.

What a lot of rubbish benny blue. What this proves is that scoring against 16 and 17 year olds is easier than scoring against seasoned championship pros.

man you dudes are so uptight and negative its obvious that a 11 year old slovakian would be better at football than a seasoned professional from scunthorpe where ever that is never mind a 17 year old ..no wonder england is such a mess with people like you being allowed to post your idiot opinions on the net . cant the european parliement organise some sort of security police force to arrest fools like you two before your warped views become public

It is entirely proper for Wickham to be playing every game for the U17s, against players that are 17 and under. It is not proper for him to be expected to play and perform well in every game in a senior team in the Championship when he is not fully developed physically nor sufficiently experienced.

If he turns out anything like Wayne Rooney I don't suppose we will be complaining, and he wasn't expected to start every game when he was Wickham's age.

These latest goals for the U17s shows pleasing development and is good news for Town. It is not even evidence that Keane is doint anything wrong, let alone proof.

One thing I think we can all agree on is that Town need to sign him up as soon as possible.

And preferably not sell him to Huddersfield shortly thereafter ;)

bennyblue - It's plonkers like you that are one of the reasons I come on here.....for a laugh. Not to laugh at what you have written because that is beyond laughable but to watch the other comments from the SENSIBLE folk. Surely you must realise by now that you are a total pillock. But that's probably because I can smell green/yellow sh1te coming from your comments. Go back to the boring budgie pit and leave us BLESSED one's to ourselves!

However good they may be U17 football is a completely different game, Wickham has only in recent matches got used to the style of football in the Championship and that has shown with his first goal, IMO.

Comparing Wickham with Rooney is like comparing apple juice with cider.

Yorkshires right, Lee martin comes to mind!

Seriously though, I would be happy if Connor signs a four year contract like Martin to protect a valuable asset.

My point regarding Rooney was that IF Wickham turns out anything like him, we will obviously be delighted, and that EVEN such an exceptional player as Rooney was not expected to play reguarly, let alone perform consistently aged 16/17.
