Colback: Town Can Be Contenders Next Season
Colback: Town Can Be Contenders Next Season
Thursday, 15th Apr 2010 09:01

Loanee midfielder Jack Colback says he expects the Blues to be contenders for a top six place next season despite failing to make a challenge this time around. The 20-year-old won’t be involved with Town during 2010/11 with Sunderland boss Steve Bruce indicating that he will be part of his squad at the Stadium of Light.

Colback told the club site: "It's just been disappointing that we are not higher up the table. We have got ourselves into a position when we have threatened to really push on but we have not taken those opportunities. It's been one step forward, two steps back sometimes.

"Having been here since August though, I have seen the way the team has improved and the signs are there for Ipswich to push on now.

“I fully expect the club to be up near the top of the Championship next season and in serious contention for the top six."

Over the weekend, Steve Bruce confirmed that Colback, who has scored five goals in 30 starts and eight sub appearances for the Blues, will be in his plans for his Sunderland first team next season.

i still remain confident of next season .... if we are to stick by RK, then bear in mind he's just about changed every player on the pitch (for better or for worse),
and this team needs time to bond ......

If tho, this time next season its the same old sh@t, then get rid ... infact if we don't make the play offs .... GET RID

Obviously knows we are going to sign 15-6 new players then, because the current first team clearly cant compete with the top six of this division.

Think 15 new players is a bit steep Uttlesford!

If you ran the table from the 15th game, I believe we would be in the top six.

Whilst I obviously appreciate the season started from one game, I believe there is some validity in highlighting this record, which would supports Colback's opinion looking towards next season.

Shame our overall performances do not reflect this dramatic improvement from the first thirs of the season, so I am under no illusions whatsover that we have a long way to go to be real contenders.

Colback has been one of our best performers. We have had a poor season with him in the side, so I am not so confident that we will finish in the top 6 - an improvement of 7 league places and 10 league points - without him. Actually he said "in contention for the top six", which actually Ipswich usually are apart from this season. Any team spending £10M+ on transfers and new wages should be looking at the top six in the Championship I would have thought.

I believe we potentially could make the play-offs if we spend well and bring in some quality attackers, but that depends on Marcus Evans putting in substantial funds over the summer and then Roy Keane spending the money well.

I'm rather scared to give RK anymore money to spend. Some of if purchases have been rather dubious. Loans have been better, but you won't get team promoted with loan players.

My main worry is we will not have much of a squad at start of next season with so many players expected to leave/pushed.

I love you Jack! I hope you can stay here for 1 more season to push us towards promotion!

I think giving any manager in the championship alot of money to spend is a big risk, the better premier league talent obviously doesnt want to come down a division, so you are then gambling on fringe players in premier league teams who dont always work out i.e. Carlos Edwards.
The other side of the coin is gambling on players from divisions below which can work out or fail i.e Sam Parkin.
The one issue with buying from lower league teams is that they can then put higher prices on their players because they know teams are interested.
Roy Keanes signings have not been the greatest but he took a gamble on what he thought would be the players we needed to strengthen the team in areas where we desperately need it, Priskin for instance scored 15 goals last season and for 1.75mil isnt a bad bit of business unfortunately it hasnt worked for him but Keane didnt know that was going to happen when he signed him. Lee Martin is another one who has been poor but again at the start of the season when he signed he has all the makings of something we have lacked a winger, again its a pity he hasnt lived up to the money we paid for him.
Im hoping next season Keane is able to find the few players needed to strengthen the squad he has, we need pace and width hopefully he'll concentrate on those areas.

Back to the main article lol - Colback has been a star in a horrific season, i remember when we signed him and i was thinking "oh great another central midfielder" but the boy has talent and i expect him to go on and do well for Sunderland

Well, Jack has to say this kind of fluff anyways... Only I really expect us to be a top 6 contender next season provided we have a fruitfull summer selection. As it seems Murphy will not be part of our next season push we need now two quality strikers to get... I am not so optimistic on that but let's hope Keano will do his job the best possible way!

The snag is that many better players this year are loan players like young Jack so it might be back to square one for the 2011 KO (let's hope not).

Can we all club together and buy bennyblue something nice to maybe make him SMILE, or be OPTIMISTIC once in a while?? Jesus man, have a bit of hope.

Will be genuinely sorry to see Jack go as he has been an outstanding player. Shame that the nature of football at the moment means many clubs are relying on loanees rather than splashing the cash on signings. Hopefully once Civelli gets fit we will get him to fill that LW/LWB hole that Jack currently can sit in. A midfield of Civelli-Leadbitter-Norris-Edwards doesn't sound too bad, does it? A left side of O' Connor and Civelli switching and covering each other sounds pretty good to me! Of course, until then, Edwards can switch to the left allowing Walters to go right too (assuming Lee Martin has no future here, lol). Still unsure about Garvan however ...

Lets hope that Keano gets a little money to spend,
i honestly don't think we need a load of players. Murphy is a great keeper with wrighty as number 2, you got Wright, Macca,Delaney and o'conner or Peters.
midfield we got the likes of Norris,Ledbetter, walters and as strikers go wickham could be the next best thing next season so all in all we have a good foundation, don't forget we also have some good kids coming through the ranks as well so i would say that next year isn't the doom and gloom everyone may think it will be, i'm looking at the positives obviously like all true blues fans and think with the right purchases we will be a top six team next year.
All the best to colbeck also as he has without doubt been one of the best loanees weve had in a number of seasons so hats of to Keano for that as well.

Jack has been an excellent signing by Roy. I still say Roy has made more GOOD than BAD signings, yet of course the negative boys prefer to focus only on the bad ones.

I am optimistic for next season. Very disappointing that some remain negative for next season. Remember Jim's first season? Dreadful. Second season better, then it went downhill. Roy deserves a second season. None of us know the extent of the mess he inherited from Jim. Look at QPR and the mess he left them in.

I for one will be supporting my team next season and rather than moan moan moan, I hope the small minority who do that, do the same.

Obvious that Bruce would have Jack back at some point as he is a quality player but a pity we cannot have him for one more season.

I have a sneaking feeling that we are going to be promotion contenders next season. I have had my doubts about keane at times (especially with his signings) but there is something about him where I think he will always come out on top in the end. As i have said in previous posts, he put us through this miserable season and I am sure he will be as determined as anyone to make amends and prove the doubters wrong.

Let's stick to his two year contract and judge him at the end - I think there will be quite a few people eating humble pie.

i would like too highlight that if you ran the season from games 1-15 we would be relegated with probably the worst record ever in the 2nd.just for you people who somehow want to pretend that those games were'nt part of the season and our performance over the last 4-5 has'nt set the world on fire.. so exactly when has roy done this amazing stuff that makes us a top 6 team in probably one of the weakest 2nd div seasons since krsna knows when.. please explain brainwashed ones........

At the end of the day bennyblue, we are on course to at least equal the points total of Jim in his last season (we 54 at the mo, he gained 56 before Keano won the last 2 games to finish on 62). OK, no great shakes there, but hardly disastrous! Jim's points were spread over the season whereas Keano's have been concentrated in the last few months, that's all. This season has been quite a major rebuild (admittedly maybe not totally necessary in some cases), so all the more credit to the manager and players for turning around a near-impossible situation that we were in before Xmas.

And I am really not sure about this 'weakest' division ... Newcastle? WBA?? Forest??? All very strong sides, head-and-shoulders above everyone else. Boro were always going to be there or thereabouts. Then you have teams like Cardiff, Swansea, Leicester, Sheffield Utd, a resurgent Blackpool ... a very competitive league where everyone is beating everyone else.

I am certainly not brainwashed - I just believe that given the disruption caused by changing manager, we shouldn't be too suprised, and changing manager yet again within one year will just cause more disruption over the summer and next season (changing manager at Peterboro' didn't help much, did it?). Give Keano the summer, and let's see how next season starts. And by all means, if we are in a poor situation again in Sept/Oct, then ME probably should look at changing the man in charge. Until then, Keano gets my full support.
