Tottenham Make Wickham Bid Monday, 3rd May 2010 15:27
Tottenham have made Town a £5 million offer for 17-year-old striker Connor Wickham. The Londoners want to sign the frontman during the summer with a view to loaning him back to the Blues for the 2010/11 season.
On Friday, manager Roy Keane refused to disclose whether the Blues had received an offer for the England U17 international, who signed a two-year professional contract last month.
A week previously Keane said he would be lynched by supporters if he were to allow the biggest talent to emerge from the academy in years to leave so soon.
The offer may be considered by owner Marcus Evans and chief executive Simon Clegg, however, they may feel that Wickham could be worth even more in a year’s time after a full season in the Championship, with plenty of other Premier League clubs, including Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal, all understood to have been eyeing the 6ft 3in tall striker.
Wickham is happy at the club and has said he is in no hurry to leave having ended the season by netting three goals in his last five games.

As stated in article, the final say is with Evans and Clegg and if they decide it's a good offer there's naff all Keane, or us the fans, can do about it!

While sitting here in Florida, I must say I have never seen Conner play. I read here daily and hate seeing the hate for Keane. When I lived in the UK, I was a season ticket holder, and went to every game home or away including night matches. Like most of you, I was shocked at Rhodes being sold, but since there agree with comments that he only scored 20+ goals in the 1st div. Could he of done that at Championship level? I dont think so. Now as for Conner, 5 mill is enough for me to retire on, but like many said here, what could we get in return for that? not to much. Not only that, it is getting someone that wants to be here, and that seems to be our stumbling block. Or is it out wages cap that we have? IMO 5 mill is not enough, even with the session loan back and top ups to follow. He is our only ray of sunshine to give us hope at this point. If we sell him, I am sure many of the people who has already paid for new session tickets are going to feel cheated. At 5 mill, please dont even consider this as a good deal, as it is not. From what I have seen, this guy will be worth so much more "IF" we ever sell him in a few years time. M.E. you need to keep him here if you truly are an ITFC supporter, not everything in this world has a price tag!

Could we buy back Rhodes with 5 mill !!!

I think its a good offer. Wickham won't be at his peak for a few more years. Aslong as we get him back for the season on loan i don't see a problem with it, he is a prospect but I cannot see his value increasing to imuch more than 5 million.

I watched Wickham for the first time live yesterday and can say that he is a million miles better than Bowditch, Clarke, Haynes etc. were at that age. For me he has the look of a young Rooney - and some of the petulance as well. I think that it has already been suggested that the final decision may well rest with Marcus Evans rather than Roy Keane (possibly as did the Rhodes deal). I would say that if he does goes then we may well be missing out on seeing the next England striker play for us but that is the way that it goes these days. Walcott, Bale, Ashley Young and more recently Jonjo Sheverly have all left clubs early in order to join the 'big boys' and there is very little that their clubs could do. All we must do is make sure we get the right sort of money and the right type of add-ons if we are going to have to sell him.

We need to be realistic. ME is a BUSINESS MAN. In reality this decision will be taken away from RK. End of story. I hope Wickham stays but we can NOT afford to turn down so much money. I would like to see that fee nearer the £10M mark, but the key for me is having a considerbale sell on fee - at least 25%. If they will loan him back at nil cost, then I think it will be difficult for the BOARD to refuse this offer - sadly.

No,No,No,we must not sell Connor Wickham - he is the future of the club and £5 million is nowhere near enough anyway.

This is a tough, tough call. On the one hand Wickham is a very good player, but nowhere near the finished article. So £5m for him NOW is a reasonable return, and would hopefully buy a couple of decent replacements. But equally, this may all be out of Keano's hands (how many managers complain of interference from above?), so the anti-Keane brigade may have to hold their fire for the moment, and if the CLUB decided to sell him (rather than Keano), I would be very disappointed and it would show a serious lack of ambition by the club as a whole. Despite the Marcus millions, I still fear we may be a selling club. Just if he does get sold, we must absolutely bleed every drop out of Tottenham!

The fact's remain, Connor has only signed a 2 year contract - 5 Million plus Loaned back to us for 12 months is not a bad deal. In an ideal world I would not advocate a deal, however those that state he will be worth more in a years time are wrong because of the length of his current contract. The club has 2 options, look to extend his current contract, which his advisors will reject or accept any offers similar to what is being touted. A final say - The decision will me made me Marcus Evans & Simon Clegg, not Roy Keane.

DebenBlue, is 100% correct with this statement, "A final say - The decision will me made me Marcus Evans & Simon Clegg, not Roy Keane", so you anti Keane numskulls, open your eyes, Keane only manages the players ME allows him to have in his squad.

What were Keane's comments a week or 2 back ?...."if I sell Wickham i'll get lynched"....might be worth selling him then.
Lightningboy added 19:13 - May 3
..oh and btw..no matter how much money we'd get for Wickham - would any of you trust Keane to spend it wisely?...(martin,priskin,edwards..not to mention the £90m he squandered at sunderland..think on folks).
stinkiusminkius added 19:19 - May 3
This is indeed very worrying.... however - if Evans decides to sell without Keanes approval then maybe Keane will get the hump and leave on a matter of principal. Every cloud has a silver lining and all that...

suffolk n god.. 5 mill and Gio both back on loan that looks a good bit of buisness by Roy along with a big big sell on clause!
WadzillaBhoy added 19:31 - May 3
I'd be seriously disapointed if he left. Darren Bent couldn't even get many games up at Tottenham. They have such a good squad already, trust the yids to want more. All our transfer fees get inflated due to M.E well Tottenham have D.Levy so why dont we call it 25 Mill with a future transfer clause of around 50%, that sounds fair to me.
jamesy_itfc_keano added 19:32 - May 3
Well roy keane has already said he doesnt want to sell the lad ... so if he is sold it would be marcus evans choice not keane. What i dont want to see if he does go is everyone turning on keane again .. becuase he doesnt want him to be sold !!
Ginja added 19:36 - May 3
Surely if Spurs were after him they would have got involved and tried to turn the lad's head before he signed a professional contract last month? It would have cost them compensation but surely less than 5 mil??? Then again Harry Redknap's hardly known for his nous with money.
bluechick added 19:43 - May 3
Sell him asap. Liverpool just paid £1.7M for sheveley who is a Charlton regular. Remember where Logan, Bowditch, Clarke etc are now
Porridge123 added 19:48 - May 3
Marcus if you do this I will lynch you...him along with the two center backs are who we should be building around not shipping out. He is our future.
Bergholtblue added 19:57 - May 3
No-one has thought about Connor's reaction. Once his agent gets into him about the high wages, he may not want to stay here anyway. Would a lad who wants away be the best for us. If the offer is true, I can see him going.
Liverpool_blu added 19:59 - May 3
Id let him go for following deal $5m now with a further £1.5m after 50 & then £1.5m for 100 appearances. Loaned Back next season with option for a 2nd and 3rd season loan Gio Also Loaned Back Next Season.

Has anyone considered that Gio may not want to drop to Championship level?
siebdykstra added 20:08 - May 3
And it's definately not Keane's choice. He wouldn't want to sell, but Premiership money talks, especially with only a 2 year contarct. I'd be looking for a lot of clauses, such as money from first international appearance, goals, sell on, all that football manager type stuff! Back to the real world though, if he's gonna be that good eventually, how long will he stay here anyway? Unless we become serious premiership winning candidates in the next three years, he'll go to a good premiership club and we'll make a bit of cash..... and Gio still won't sign for us.
