Town Set for New Chopra Offer Monday, 7th Jun 2010 17:47
Town are reportedly ready to up their offer to Cardiff City for Michael Chopra to just over £4 million. Last week, the Blues increased their bid to £3.75 million, but the Bluebirds are believed to want to at least match the £4 million fee they paid Sunderland for the 26-year-old a year ago.
Chopra played for manager Roy Keane at Sunderland and the Newcastle-born striker is the Blues boss’s number one target this summer. Keane hopes to pair Chopra, who scored 21 goals for Cardiff during 2009/10, with Connor Wickham next season.
The Bluebirds are understood to be lining up Swindon’s Charlie Austin to replace Chopra once Town have made an offer they find acceptable.
Austin, 20, was linked with the Blues in December, during a hugely impressive first season as a professional with the defeated League One play-off finalists.

It worries me to think Keane is going to spend that amount of money on one player, look at his track record on the signings he made last season......Disastrous

Getting a bit overpriced now. Clearly Cardiff know that keane has no scouting network and that chopra is one of the few possible remaining targets of players he's worked with before. This to me is one of keanes bigger weaknesses - he needs to branch out at where hes looking to potentially get bargains or little heard of gems. Open that scouting network. Maybe look abroad. Yet another reason to say "in keane we dont trust".

I agree Stinkius. RK is no Joe R....... but better Chops/Wicks/substi-Murphs, than the half hearted combi-shambles we put up with last season.

Well done keano, thats if this is true! Cant wait for next season. Just wish we could get two decent wingers in, and a creative midfielder! COYB!

murphy need a RB Macauley delaney o'connor walters leadbitter norris need a LM chopra priskin/wickham (wickham to start but he cant play every game at 17) bench ALB edwards priskin/wickham civelli/martin tommy smith this gives us 2/3 attacking options and 1/2 defensive covers of required - this then gives us a chance

Surely we could get a better value abroad? Could propobably get a decent striker and playmaking midfielder for that. Where the hell has happened to our scouting network?

I like Chopra but not sure 4 mill seems a lot to me, perhaps Austen might be the better bet!!

His loss of form coincided with him being done for punching a fan at a newcastle palace match and being arrested for being drunk and disorderly a few weeks later. He did of course also have a well publicised gambling addiction whilst at sunderland and in may this year was reported to have lost 15k in 2 hours on the horses....pretty much answers questions about his loss of form. He is proven but 4m seems a lot of money and my fear is if it doesn't work evans may decide to pack his bags and his money will go with it.

We NEED to get Chopra!! I can see why people are naging on about Hooper but there must be a reason why we arent going for him. I can only think that a) he has 1 gd season (a bit like Priskin did) plus b) he is attracting alot of other bigger clubs SIGN CHOPRA!! Try get rid of Garvan, Healy, Stead etc.......

@ Monkey - Chops wants to come and play for Big Daddy Roy as BDR knows how to control all of Chops' silly behaviour - hell, BDR used to do all that stuff you list every weekend! If BDR gets Chops under the wing again and sorts him, gets him running about, he's a safe'ish 15 goal, 4m punt - small change for an owner as rich (& serious about ITFC) as he professes to be...... (Tee Total Wicks will score the rest)

I really hope we get him. We may as well pay £4000000 compared to £3750000 if it gets the man. Chopra is a proven goalscorer at this level which is what this club has been crying out for for the last 5 years. He worked really well with Bothroyd who is similar in stature and style to Wickham so hopefully they could form a lethal partnership. To those saying that if we spend £4mill on him we wont have any left for fees for other players, remember Keane hinted that a couple of his targets were out of contract whilst if we got Townsend that would be a loan so we may be able to fund these from sales of Trotter, Bruce, Healy etc. I just hope Chopra's agent does not hold out for silly wages as that could be a stumbling block. However I guess we would not be upping our offer if wages would rule out a deal?

£4M to much. to much talk of Wickham & chopra together. Will Wickham play every match, I think not unless you want to burn him out, so then you need a third striker. And none of us think the others we have are much cop. So that leaves you with Chopra trying to partner with two people for a season. Cant see that working to well. Others who will go out the door the other way who you may not want to go are Macauley, Garvan, Walters. And remember the last time we bought a striker with a good record, he was supposed to score goals for us because we had a better midfield, and he was shhhh! and even his old club dont want him no more. Unfortunatley we have to many fringe players at this club we cannot get rid off still on the wageroll. Get rid of them and we could save us a fair bit. Healy, Edwards, Priskin, Pablo, Bruce, martin. Ask yourself this why is no one else coming in for Chopra? ,but other clubs are interested in Hooper! Cos Chopra aint worth £4M

No No No No No. Throwing big money at the obvious answer is just not clever. This has the potential to end very, very badly.

Petemorris... His record under keane is shockingly bad a goal every 5 games, so keane might have stopped him gambling, but he couldn't then get him to score goals. Although all of our strikers seem to have developed poor goalscoring records under roy

£4m is a lot of cash - but it is a very clear signal of intent and backing. Chopra & Wickham does appear to excite, let's hope... We do need strength coming off the bench and for me I'd keep and include Pablo in any plans. Maybe Priskin, who has been poor, but RK / Clegg will need to show some faith given what he cost. We need to be realistic and accept that given the state of football finances, we may not find homes for all these players RK seems not to want. We may be stuck with them, so get them motivated and fighting for a place. We don't have the luxury of being able to tell folks - that's it, you'll never play again - unrealistic I'm afraid.

Evans is not a pauper...so why all the fussing about money? Buy who we need to buy and lets get on with it. The PL is where we are heading and where MA eventually gets his ROI.
