Reported Town target James Perch is set to join newly-promoted Newcastle United after the Magpies and Nottingham Forest agreed an undisclosed fee. The Blues were claimed to have had a £750,000 offer for the 24-year-old turned down last month.

Newcastle targeted Perch, who will sign a four-year deal at St James’ Park, in January, but were rebuffed by Forest, who described their initial offer as "derisory".

Town’s apparent interest in the versatile defender or midfielder may have come from coach Ian McParland having worked with Perch during his spell at the City Ground.

Meanwhile, various sources are reviving May’s link with exiting Newcastle midfielder Nicky Butt. Roy Keane’s former Manchester United team-mate was mentioned in connection with the Blues at the end of last season, but the Town boss dismissed the claims.

Blackpool are the latest club said to be after the former England man with Preston having previously been believed to have shown interest.

Blueknight either side of the pro/ anti keane can put any spin on any story saying "how do you know it is true " , people are merely commenting on the information put before us on the website .

As for facts at the end of last season we lost two experienced players at championship level Wright and Wright , Trotter has left for Millwall ,and Colbaek,Rosenoir ,Murphy and Healy have returned to their clubs . We have informed another 8 players they are not wanted surely causing unrest and have so far brought no one new to the club whilst others are strenghtening all the time .
Surely this puts us in a weaker position than at the end of last season ?

Surco72: Possibly a weaker position, possibly not. It depends on how the situation is handled. Keane has said he wants a much leaner (smaller) squad. I personally agree with that, as I think it is much easier to generate a good team ethic/mentality/ethos, call it what you will, with a smaller squad. It's no coincidence that Mourinho has always said he wants a small (ish) tight squad and not a huge one that it is more difficult to keep players happy in. Less people sat on the sidelines bemoaning the fact that they are not picked, a tighter “group” all round. If the “8” supposedly punted around other clubs is a reflection of the players Keane believes are not good enough to represent this club, isn't it better they are gone, rather than moping around the training ground moaning to all and sundry how they are much better than x, y or Z etc, etc... So if he isn't going to use them, get rid now... And if by some miracle the odd one in this group says to himself, sod you, I am better than x, Y and Z and I'm going to show it on the training ground, so you have no choice but to pick me... Wow! Even better... that's the attitude I'd love to see and I'm sure Keane is more than man enough to put in any player showing that level of commitment (Assuming the Talent is there to back it up of course) and Ipswich end up in a better position... just imagine Keane turning round in 4-6 weeks time and saying, actually... “X” has shown great effort and commitment in the past weeks and he has quite rightly forced his way into my plans. I look forward to him showing the fans just what he can do...
So let them get rid first and then we can add. (Which is what I understand Evans is insisting on anyway...) It may well put us in a stronger position... Quality is better than quantity...
