Town Turn Down Palace Bid for Garvan
Town Turn Down Palace Bid for Garvan
Friday, 9th Jul 2010 14:13

Crystal Palace boss George Burley has revealed that Town have turned down his £100,000 offer for midfielder Owen Garvan. Garvan is understood to be amongst the eight players manager Roy Keane has made available for transfer.

Former Blues boss Burley said: “Owen hasn’t been getting a game and I would like to take him. He’s a good passer of a ball and someone who I feel who can do well for me. He’s my type of player.

“We’re short of players at Palace and I have several irons in the fire to increase our squad as soon as possible. As regards Garvan, a loan is possible for an initial down payment with more to come later. I’m hopeful I can sign Owen.”

Town are understood to want £400,000 for the 22-year-old Irish U21 international skipper, who joined the Blues from Dublin side Home Farm after leaving school.

Meanwhile, Burley has confirmed that former Blues loanee Stern John will not be returning to Selhurst Park for next season having failed to appear for pre-season training. The Trinidadian's Eagles contract was up at the end of the season.

I do wonder if one or two of you are able to read. It says that we TURNED DOWN the offer.

That is a good decision, 100K wont buy us anyone decent, and although Garvan is not as good as Norris or leadbitter, he could be worth keeping as he offers something different to those two, if only as third choice.

Garvan has got a poor attitude on the pith as he seems to not care and seems to be a very lazy player. He's a good passer of the ball don't get me wrong but when he does the pass he doesn't move which is something I would imagine keane would hate. Something Norris does very well IMO and is better than Garvan now. That's why he's got a bad attitude Walingford boy and northstand 77

Burley recognises a potential bargain .... garvan's self-confidence has been decimated after becoming the anointed scapegoat for routine tatctical failings ... to those who claim he only passes sideways take a look at last year's cardiff away game when garvan's vision effectively turned the match ...

This is like the first nip in a shark attack. Seemingly little damage but the sniff of blood starts a frenzy, except it will be a frenzy of inactivity. No one else will come in for Garvan for weeks now, Clegg and Keane will lose their nerve and let Garvan go to Palace for £150k, Burley will probably get Pablo for nothing as well. Some other club will get Stead on a free and that will be the extent of the additional funds, apart from the wages savings. Welcome to the double dip.

£100k....are you sure!?! never in a million years should we accept that!! having said though, i wouldn't be disappointed if he goes (for the right price of course), he simply hasn't improved. bit like danny haynes in that instance, hasn't pushed on like we had hoped and therefore time to move on!

i think a lot of people on here will literally just disagree with anything roy decides simply because they dont like roy in charge, whether or not it would be good for the club!!

Reading these posts reminds me that the majority of ITFC fans haven't got the foggiest clue when it comes to assessing what is & what is not a good player. Owen Garvan is far and away the most ceative player on the books. And whats all this nonsense about bad attitude.I'm afraid you're like sheep lads - one person says something & you all believe it.Well what you deserve is a kick & rush team which you'll be pleased to know is all we'll get while Keane is manager.

OK... Forget that £100k for garven is not enough... I think we all agree it isn't, those that want to keep him and those that want him to go... so £100k is not enough.
The other "theme" I am reading in these threads is that it wouldn't give us much of a transfer kitty to spend... if garven went for £100k, Pablo on free, Stead for a packet of crisps... etc I think these posters are missing the point! RK has not been told, you need to sell to generate Transfer funds.... no, no, no, As far as I can understand from the various reports I've read, he's been told, Transfer funds are available, BUT we want to try to balance the books a bit. We can't keep adding to the wage bill as our running costs already exceed our income by around £5M a year. As I understand it, he needs to reduce the wage bill to free up monies for wages for new players.... not to fund their transfer fees; basically the funds are available for trnasfer fees, but Evans isn't prepared to drastically increase the overall wage bill as well. So actually getting players off the books appears to me to be more important than how much we get for them.

That's my understanding of the position down at Portman Road anyway...

These_arent_the_days: very fair post and i agree.

Re 'attitude' this has been mentioned by a couple of players who left, including Supple who i 'think' (no italics, sorry) named him..

Also remember when he was homesick etc and received alot of support he stayed away longer than granted, and also when recovering from injury said he was in no hurry to return..

gifted player and when on his game easily the best midfielder and a step ahead of the game at Chumpship level.. however, whatever your views of RK, if HE cannot motivate you - i think its fair to say Garv hasnt looked fantastic last season - then theres probably not alot you can do for the lad..

hes not a lad anymore really either.. hes only a couple years younger than me actually.. does that make me old? bugger..

If I was Garvan & Pablo i'd sit tight for a couple more months..by then hopefully we'll have a manager in place who knows how to get us playing attractive football.

will people stop making out garvan is a creative god!!!!! he is NOT!!!! Yes he can create chances but so can norris and leadbitter and to play garvan we would have to drop one of them, something i wouldn't be happy with. Garvan can create a chance when he is playing well the rest of the time he is a passenger. 1 good game out of 5 is not good enough for me.

£100K seems very cheap. I wouldn't be disappointed if Garvan is sold or if he stays. On his day, he's a good player - but sadly those days are few and far between.

Keep him! £1M maybe but 100k is a joke

Hullo, Burley has been at the sauce again...

Lets borrow Seth Brundle's matter transporter, lob Owen Garvan and Danny Haynes in it and turn on. We'd have a world beater.

Why are people critising Burley? He is free to make a starting bid and Ipswich are free to reject it, then they can negotiate from there. If they can find a middle ground of around £250K then both clubs will be happy. If Palace get him on loan and a free next summer that won't be such good business for us!

I agree it is a shame if Garvan leaves and I don't feel confident that Keane can replace him for that kind of money. We just don't seem to have a proper scouting network and any contacts.

If I had been Cleggy, I would have taken that cash and ran !!! Judging by the dross that we have transfer listed, it will be a bonus to get any money for any of them !!!!

I still firmly believe it would be a mistake to sell Garvan. He gives us something different from the very samey midfielders that keane favours. Someone on the blogs page did some interesting stats per player of points won in games where they started and garvan was 4th best (and that includes those 2 shocking games - west brom and another?). Having said that, D Wright was 2nd best but that didn't help. Garvs is a good midfielder - not as dynamic as some, but no where near as lazy as some people believe. And he adds a different dimension. Unfortunately keane falls out with players, and has no idea of getting the team playing proper football.

I am growing more and more frustrated with what we have as a manager ! Garvan should be an integral part of the ITFC first team - Oh I forgot Keane is the manager . Garvan can thread a pass and has subtlety - Everything that Keane hasn't ! Kenae just leaqve so we can put together a team that can play a passing game and play with pride rather with fear of what the manager ? might do/say . ie KEANE GO !

Very true Kent Blue, with the manager we have now we are destined for another season of kick and rush boring football. Players with plenty of work rate but no ingenuity or ability to spot the killer ball, and also too afraid of the silent stare and wrath of the manager if some fancy trick goes wrong. We all know Garvan is no world beater but in my opinion he should be an integral part of our midfield with either Leadbitter or Norris doing the donkey work. ITFC were/are renowned for playing attractive football, we hardly saw any last season, please Keano give us some entertainment this season please!

SiBo you are absoulutly right, after all ME wouldn't bid over 4M for Chopra if he didn't have the funds. The deal fell apart on personal terms, therefore his wage would make the wage bill too high. I also love the fact our tactics are called kick and rush football! Its actually called Direct football, it is a very English style of play and most teams in the Premiership/Championship play this way. It suits a counter attacking team, which we are now given that our defense is as solid as a rock.

1M for Garvan? Is that a joke...He played 12 games last season, we'd be lucky to get 250k. I reckon he'll go for 200k and will be a great signing for Burley. He is the sort of player that would relish playing under Burley. I like Garvan and I think he is a good player but he doesn't fit into our team anymore and I don't even think its worth us keeping him as backup. It would be unfair on him if he was kept in a squad where he wouldn't get games and the fresh start under Burley could be exactly what he needs. He's not versatile enough to play our way, every time Garvan comes onto the pitch we have to change the way we play. Burley always has liked good passing football so Garvan wouldn't have to adapt and he can play the way he flourishes.
