Finnan Linked Again
Finnan Linked Again
Tuesday, 20th Jul 2010 09:34

Free agent full-back Steve Finnan is again being linked with the Blues. The Irishman is out of contract having left Portsmouth at the end of the season and was first mentioned in connection with the Blues last week.

The 34-year-old right-back played alongside Town manager Roy Keane while winning 52 Republic of Ireland caps and scoring two goals.

Finnan, who was born in Ireland but moved to Chelmsford as a youngster, played youth football with Wimbledon but started his senior career with non-league Welling, before moving on to Birmingham, Notts County, Fulham, Liverpool, Espanyol and finally Portsmouth.

He is the only player to have played in the FIFA World Cup, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup, all four levels of English League football and the English Conference.

You don't get much more experienced than that.

Blue92 - bet he's never played for The Shepherd and Dog, so must be rubbish. Boo! And he's Irish, extra boo!!

Lol, seriously he sounds like a good idea. One or two years to add stability, experience and quality. Gotta be worth a punt!

It is just me apparently - but have any of the ex-prem old players ever really done the business at Town. It's probably only me and my mate Leigh who think Legwinski was a bit overrated (lovely guy mind) but otherwise Volz? Campo? Thatch? Bart-Williams? (oh he really got on my nerves because he still had the talent...) and who can forget John Scales? Would love him to be good of course but I have my doubts. As you can see. There, done.

like one of the first comments said, give him a 12 month deal, cant go wrong tbh. I recall him even playing at centre back for Portsmouth last season? So a tad bit of versatility there.

Lonely@ think you have a point with some on your list but disagree with Legwinski especially in his first season with us, the man oowsed quality and proper footbal vision. Well happy for Finnan to be here. We need some one on the pitch to sort people out at things like free kicks and who can nip dangerous situations in the bud.

He's a right back, he's free, he has baags of experience - in the Prem, Europe international level and elsewhere... SIGN HIM. Oh, and he's Irish so he qualifys...

O'Connor can play LB, with Mc & NZ World Cup Legend TS, with Finnan at RB. Murphy in goal - oh, its shaping up very nicely.

Has my vote! ( but then I'm Irish, so what would I know )

Between him and Chris Hughton as the best right back ever to play for Ireland in my lifetime.
