Smith in New Zealand Squad for Friendlies
Smith in New Zealand Squad for Friendlies
Monday, 16th Aug 2010 18:11

Defender Tommy Smith has been named in the New Zealand squad for their friendlies with Honduras and Paraguay in October. The 20-year-old has won seven full caps and played in the All Whites’ three games at the World Cup in South Africa.

New Zealand take on Honduras at a venue yet to be confirmed on October 9th, then Paraguay at the Westpac Stadium, Wellington three days later.

Smith could be a doubt for the Championship home game with Coventry on October 16th as he is only expected back from New Zealand the previous day.

The downside of Smith playing for New Zealand is now travelling literally half way round the world for friendlies.

Perhaps he should now "retire" from international football?

Not a problem...Darren O'Dea joining this week, Damien Delaney should be back from his injury by then, and the experience will do Tommo good! :^D

Aerophobia anyone?

Is that a fear of Aero bars? I'm not sure that will work - anyway the mint Aeros are difficult to not love!

I agree with BlueBoots - we'll be well covered in defence and the experience will do him good.

Well covered in defense!? Is everyone oblivious to the fact that we don'tactually have a right back at the club, let alone a back-up!?

Pleased for Thomas but we still are woefully short on players. Can Keano not call and try and get him released from playing??

International football has brought him on immensley. It wouldnt be fair to ask him not to play for NZ now.

Keep it up Tommy, you deserve a long and sucessful international career!

shame that suffolk is so far from everything as it will tire him out flying around all the time but you should grab the chance to play as he already has 1 world cup and could have 2-3 more if things work out

More experience, it can only do him the world of good.

He is looking a lot more confident and composed so far this season and playing for N Z can only have helped in that. Can he claim air miles or has that long gone?

Playing against such opposition should only improve Tommy so good for him & us & promotes the club internationally. Occasional pain but we should have enough coverage baring more injuries in that position.

Whats happening with Leadbitter..... must be a reason we've heard nought?

It will do him good and can only help him turn into a more mature confident footballer. The locals here think he is great and rrom a selfish point of view I am looking forward to watching him play as well!
