Pablo Set to Join Palace Today
Pablo Set to Join Palace Today
Friday, 20th Aug 2010 10:08

Town boss Roy Keane has confirmed that striker Pablo Couñago is expected to join Crystal Palace on a season-long loan today. The 31-year-old won’t be able to play in Saturday’s game between the two sides at Selhurst Park.

Keane said: “They’ve been in talks and I would expect some news on Pablo today. I think he’ll probably sign for them on a season-long loan. Pablo only has a year left on his contract anyway. I’d expect that deal to go through today.”

The Blues boss says there will be no new additions before the weekend and admits that he’s becoming increasingly frustrated: “I’ve been speaking to players for the last couple of months. I spoke to two players over the summer who wanted to come to the club, but the deals weren’t done.

“It’s all very well me speaking to these players, it’s not up to me to get the deals done. It’s up to the chief executive and the owner. We’re doing a lot of talking. There are loads of talks. I’m sick of talking, believe it or not!”

“It’s been frustrating this week. Last week you asked me the question and I was quite relaxed, but this week we’re disappointed, we picked up one or two injuries and we might have won the game last weekend had we had more options and more players available.”

Keane says he is continuing to look for several new signings: “I think we need three or four new players, not just one. We need cover.”

A fee for Wigan striker Jason Scotland was agreed more than a week ago, but that deal is understood to be on hold while the Latics find a replacement.

Keane says midfielder Grant Leadbitter will not be fit enough to face Palace after suffering an ankle problem against Burnley, but that wideman Carlos Edwards could be back from his groin injury.

I do find it quite amazing that so many people are lauding keane as some sort of managerial genius and that if he had these extra players all would be rosey. Yes, we've had 2 pretty decent results but that's all so far, and last year was a disaster, so there's still a LONG way to go before he can be considered a good manager.
As for blaming ME and SC, this isn't really fair as we don't know the situation. Were the targets and their wages ever realistic? We don't know. And the Scotland situation is clearly not their fault.

Keane has done his bit in reducing the wage bill its now up to Evans to do likewise (I know people blame Clegg but lets face it he is just the monkey - Evans is the organ grinder!)

I can understand Evans being reluctant to part with money having financed last seasons spending spree and one for Magilton before that but hes going to have to stump up some more cash soon. We are getting to the point where we will not be able to function on the pitch in terms of numbers unless everyone stays fit and we get no suspensions!

Jesus people, we dont know whats going on behind the scenes. Stop giving yourselves heart attacks!!

....Im sure its just as important to ME and SC to get these deals done.

What qualifications would you like Clegg to have exactly?

Its just deal making, not rocket science.

Glad about counago to be honest! Been a good servent to our club, but it's now time to move on, espcially with wages like 10/15k a week! When your only scoring 3 or 4 goals a season! Keane has done a good job by getting rid of average players who arnt going to take the club anywhere! Keane has identified his targets, now it's up to cleft to pull his finger out! Come on let's
by at least 1 if not 2 quality strikers! Imagine the forward options in wickamchopra/Scotland/and priskin! COYB!

this is just getting rediculous!
weve got rid of: Walters, Bruce, Garvan, R.Wright, D. Wright, Balkestein, and some other young players, and who have we got to replace them???
Fulop - who took a year to sign
Kennedy - good, but wont last moere than a few years
Hourihane - reserve player
O'Dea - dont know much about him yet
Townsend - decent player

What the hell has Cleggy done for our club. The man is a joke who is destroying our club - it's time for him to either start supporting the club and do his job or quit. The only thing he seems to have done this week is agree a deal with the official receivers to give them money from JW's transfer - how is that benefitting our club? Sort it out, before it is too late!!

If Chopra, Scotland & McCormack was Plan A, B & C what is Plan D, E & F because, Scotland apart, I don't think we stand a chance of signing the other two - and even then we don't know what Scotland's demands will be.

Surely it can't be the money - they have got £2.75m for Walters and have made significant payroll savings with his departure and Pabs going on loan (although we could still be paying some of that). I hope they are not waiting for Stead to go before they spend!

Surely it cannot all be ME and SC's fault as there are chairman/owners at every club trying to push the costs up, agents looking to milk the cream from any deal and players who are looking to maximise their wages.

Are we the only club really having problems with transfers this year?

Although rightly so...steady Roy. I can't believe the amount we have trimmed the squad there are no new permanent signings in. Not good enough board....despite the millions you've put in!! : )

Word on the street here in Bristol is that Stead has now agreed personal terms but we won't let him go until we sign a replacement (Scotland and/or A.N.Other).

I think that is quite sensible as we only have one other striker but let's hope it does not hack City off too much and they then pull out of the deal.

Immensely frustrating times!

We should be doing a wigan, only get rid of strikers when we have replacements !

dubblue added 12:37 - Aug 20
Previous posting suggests that is what we are doing! It seems we are better at getting rid, than replacing!!!

SC and ME shouldn't put up with Keane slating them like that, they are in control of the finances and shouldn't be held over the barrel or pay stupid wages to players who don't deserve them. You lot are the first to compain about what some players are paid.

Keane out

Quagmire...we need a bigger squad!! We had 7 players under the age of 23 on the pitch last week and virtually the whole bench were youth team!! Now we've shed we need to reinvest. Simple no?

Personally I'm not convinced Keanos actually blaming ME & Cleggy personally from what I'm reading, he's just saying he speaks to the players and then hands the deals to Cleggy and ME to close them, and they don't. Didnt say why. Money, terms etc wont have been agreed by Keano then, so if a player/ agent etc demands over the odds wages/ conditions etc, it would be silly to say "oh, go on then, we have a wage structure here to stop us going bankrupt, but for you we can be right royally shafted". We dont know the story and just because someone has an opportunity to close a deal doesnt mean its wise to do so - any sales person will know if it doesnt make financial sense you walk away or get burnt later on. We did that with others in the squad at whatever price/ conditions and everyone moans about that now.

Interesting extra comment from Keane in the Radio Suffolk interview...

"We've had players lined up 12 weeks ago who wanted to sign for Ipswich and they weren't done."

Quagmire added 13:24 - Aug 20
Keanish = I agree entirely that we need a bigger squad. That doesn't mean we should pay over the odds for average players and then pay them a stupid salary. That will only lead to lots of 'he's rubbish - why are we paying him £x a week' moans as soon as they have a bad game.

ME and SC have supported Keane and gave him a lot of money last year and some of his signings have been dreadful - I don't blame them for being cautious and sensible with their money.

Not so wise words Keano! You should know who is the boss:) And believe it or not - part of your job is "talking" so continue talking until you capture a couple of strikers for us here!

I can see problems now as Keane said we would have 3 new players by Saturday.
1 in and possible 3 out by the end of today and only a week left till the window closes
Keane left Sunderland because he could not get the players he wanted and now he has gone public about not getting the players.

Got a feeling it will soon be goodbye Mr Keane as it looks like he has had enough
