Police Reviewing Footage of Leeds Clash
Police Reviewing Footage of Leeds Clash
Tuesday, 5th Oct 2010 09:23

Police are reviewing video footage of an incident involving around 40 Leeds supporters 15 minutes after Saturday’s game at Portman Road. Officers were forced to use dogs to control the group which was trying to force its way from the Leeds coaches in the Cattle Market car park back on to Portman Road.

A police spokesman: “Unfortunately there was an incident after the match where a group of around 30-40 away fans congregated and started to behave in a threatening manner towards other fans and the police.

“Police dogs were called in to support officers already on scene and the group was contained. Officers who attend football matches are aware that these situations can arise and it was dealt with quickly and professionally.

“The vast majority of fans were able to enjoy a good day out and a good game of football.”

Five arrests were made during the afternoon, while 27 supporters of either club were ejected from the ground.

During the second half of the game, which the Blues won 2-1, stand-in Town skipper Grant Leadbitter appeared to be hit by an object - reportedly a lighter - thrown from the Leeds section.

The last time the sides met, at Elland Road at the end of the 2006/07 season, the game was held up for 30 minutes after Leeds fans staged a pitch invasion and threw coins and other missiles at Town’s travelling support. Blues striker Alan Lee had all but confirmed the Whites' relegation to League One with a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw.

I won't express my opinions on the Leeds fans, as my comments get removed! But... This is down to the police intelligence or lack of.. Letting both sets of fans out at the same time! Dumb! Dumb! Dumb!
On a higher note though - Still haven't stopped smiling after the win - A fantastic game/atmosphere! COYB's!

I must question, after the Police had spent all week telling us via websites, newspapers and television that restriction would be put in place and that no bad behavior would be tolerated. Why o why after a feisty match and atmosphere did they miss the basic principle of keeping the away supporters in for 10 minutes to let the home fans clear?? This was a case of really bad managment and I suggest that the Police review this before the visit of Millwall at the end of the month!!!!

I couldn't see what was bad about what happened??? Some of the fans started hurling abuse at the Leeds coaches, sticking a few fingers up and then disappeared into Rileys or the Drum. No harm done. You just played a team who you hate and have just beaten. Whats the harm in giving the Leeds Fans the big 'un?? They deserved it.

Suffolksam you're an idiot, know nothing about Policing and are obviously anti-police. You even blame the government for the idiotic behaviour of a mindless minority. We should support the Police to identify, lock up and ban these idiots!
Incidently most Leeds fans, like most Town fans, are decent people. Football Hooligans are the scum of the earth!!!

Having worked at the ground for a number of years and with the exception of the family stand, Elland Rd is full of scum, and nobody will tell me otherwise.

I saw this develope and it was entirely down to RUBBISH policing. They should have taken a firm hold of the Leeds fans and PUT them on thier coaches. Instead they allowed them to mingle with Town fans on Portman Road and it all got ugly. The dog units where NOT in Portman Road they were at the TOP by the Community Radio. By the time they had worked thier way through the crowds it was already under way. Dreadful crowd control by all police concerned. They knew that there was a chance of this and they should have stopped it before it started. Credit to Leeds true fans they made agreat atmosphere on Saturday and behaved themselves.

The division this year is a melting pot for clubs with notorious fans as well as big derby clashes and local rivalries: Cardiff, Swansea, Millwall, Leeds, Bristol City, Portsmouth to name a few...

I've already heard of loads of clashes involving QPR, Cardiff, Millwall and Bristol City Fans and we're only 10 games in!

All this fan & club rivalry makes for an electric atmosphere! But the police need to wake up a bit sooner and reduce the threat that some thugs present to kids etc. attending the games!!!

Yes the return of football hooligans is coming back, you will find that most trouble is not the real fans and just thugs who have been banned before.
I used to steward in the Bobby Robson stand and most of the fans behaved themselves and were a credit to the club, it was just troublemakers out of the ground that was banned when there was trouble. The stadium manager does a great job and has a good team there. Once it gets outside it is down to the local police to sort out the trouble. Don't complain to the club, complain to the Suffolk police that with this government will be cut.
However keep the run going Ipswich, since i have moved to Oxfordshire you have been brilliant. Tell the ground staff to keep me locked out and the premiership here we come.lol

Unfortunately for a club with such a history Leeds United are now followed by some of the worst football supporters it has been my misfirtune to come across in 40 years of following the town. To often the word scum id thrown about in our football grounds, more often being directed at unfortunate supporters for wearing the wrong colours, but Leeds United have a serious problem with a minority of scum who follow their club. We saw it when they were relegated and we saw it again on Saturday when they were promoted. Leeds United must sort this out as they will destroy a once greatr club and must represent a stain on all the decent supporters who folow them.

If you are a big hard man who can abuse Leeds fans from behind 2metre railings and then RUN off to Riley's or the Monkey then as you say I can see that there is no problem, but if you are an 8yr old going home with your Dad or a pensioner who has supported the club fo 60yrs then there is a problem if you are caught up in this!!!!! IDIOT.

Whats the point of looking at video footage? They did that following the game where we relegated them, and bugger all action was taken.

Crowman - I agree , went with my 7 yr old on sat. Just glad I didn't get caught up in it. Saw one very young fan reducedto tears because of it. The majority of Leeds fans added a real atmosphere to the game shame about the idiotic few !!. What I don't understand is why they let so many Leeds fans stay in the south sand when it became obvious they were supporting Leeds and winding everyone around them up.

I have to admit, the policing at Ipswich is 'unusual'!
It seems to be the only ground anywhere where the home supporters are treated worse than the away fans.
Go to any other ground and you will find that plod are very heavy-handed or at worst strict with the away fans.
At Portman Road it appears to be the opposite.
Just when you think that hooliganism is fading and the yobs are disappearing...something spoils it.
My friends and I have to pass the Railway Tavern, going to and from the game. After the Cardiff game, we were treated to a large group of drunken Welsh lads there who were hurling abuse at everyone walking by. I noticed people with very young children being made to feel very uncomfortable or probably scared.
Before the Leeds game, those lovely Leeds yobs were outside shouting abuse and threats at everyone going by.
Guess what...on BOTH occasions, there were two Police Officers, stood just on the bridge with their backs to the mob, not taking a blind bit of notice. Perhaps they just prefer 'an easy life' when really they should do some policing!
Like my mate said on Saturday ~ "If that doesn't constitute threatening behaviour, what does?"
I wouldn't be surprised if, at the Millwall game, plod shut Portman Road to home supporters after the game and/or lock some of the home fans in for a bit. Can't have those delightful Millwall fans put out, can we?

The policing was poor on Saturday and no mistake. I had to walk through the so called Leeds 'fans' on my way home and it was obvious many were out for trouble. That didnt bother me as I am quite capable of looking after myself if necessary but there were a lot of families with children about who were clearly terrified.

I'm not blaming the police on the ground as they had a difficult job to do in the circumstances but whatever idiot was in charge and made the decision not to hold the Leeds fans back for ten minutes to allow home fans to clear should be sacked!

I can imagine that the club might not be all that keen on detaining angry fans inside their stadium for a period after the game, antagonising them further.

Not just because they risk damage to their stadium, but also that they will be responsible for the control of the fans- stewards arent really the best option, police are, and I imagine that comes at a cost when its on their own premises.

If the fans are outside, its the responsibility of the local police to deal with the problem.

The football authorities have got to start getting to grips with this as well. Attending football matches these days is largely a pleasureable experience but there are fans from a few clubs, and everyone knows what clubs they are, that seem to want to go back to the chaos that was footbal in the 70's.

This is not just an 'English' problem. Football violence is just as prevalent in other Countries. We have seen disgraceful scenes at International level and nothing appears to be done about it.

FIFA UEFA and national FAs have got to start dishing out penalties that hurt the countries/clubs. And I don't mean fines, they have got to start banning teams from competitions, docking points, etc. This may hurt the innocent as well as the guilty but something must be done to start making the clubs responsible for the behaviour of their own fans.
