Wickham Desperate for First Goal of the Season
Wickham Desperate for First Goal of the Season
Tuesday, 16th Nov 2010 14:38

Striker Connor Wickham says he’s desperate to score his first goal of the season having failed to find the net for the Blues in what so far has been an injury-hit 2010/11. The 17-year-old, who has also reiterated his commitment to the Blues, will have an opportunity to open his account in an England U21 shirt when he makes his debut for Stuart Pearce’s side in Germany later this afternoon (live on ESPN and the FA website, 5pm).

Wickham, who has had spells out with injuries to each of his ankles, told the club site: "I'm desperate to score, to be honest. I got a few last season and when I go out onto the pitch, I want to score goals. I want to play games. I want to score goals.

"I've had a few chances this season but it's not worked out for me but I think once I get up and running the goals will come. I'm confident of that."

Despite continuing reports linking him with all the bigger Premier League sides — Manchester City were mentioned by a newspaper earlier in the week — the Hereford-born frontman says he’s happy with the Blues: “All I’m interested in is Ipswich Town and playing football for this club. I’m not worried about what is going on around me.

“I’m at the right club to develop and look after me on the pitch. I’ve got the right family around me to look after me off the pitch. All I’m concerned with is helping Ipswich Town do well this season.”

Meanwhile, David Paul, nephew of former chairmen John and Patrick Cobbold, says his uncles would be dismayed by the current state of Town: “In their day, the club was a happier place all-round. The community spirit was stronger, and I’m not saying this to defend or even promote my family.

“I’m saying this because I think that the ethos of the club has changed completely. They need to be seen to be talking to fans.

“[Marcus Evans] needs to stand up and be counted, and engage with fans," he continued. "I am sure that both my uncles would turn in their graves now, at the way the club is being run.”

Elsewhere, Norwich striker Grant Holt's sending off in Saturday's 3-3 draw with Reading has been overturned, meaning he will be available for the East Anglian derby against the Blues a week on Sunday.

Good on Connor a very mature statement, hes obviously a rough diamond but with experience and nurturing the boy will become a top player unlike bowditch, clarke etc he has strength coupled with an eye for goal, positioning and aerial technique will come with time he may not end up being the next wayne rooney but he will be a premier league regular one day

Jeez where did the David Pauls comment come from!! Completely unrelated to headline.

There is no need to be tagging unrelated stories to main articles to take up a few lines.

Well said Connor the goals will come with a steady run in side playing with confidence and providing chances and well said Mr Pauls the ethos of the club has changed on and off the pitch a fact which a lot of our supporters are missing and so far certainly not for the better

Brian maybe Phil is smart enough to realise that making a full story out of those comments would just give the anti-Evans and Keane outer brigade some more ammo to fire at the club.

I can feel my IQ lowering just being on 'comments'

Brian do you not think the David Paul quote would have been a little short as an independent news item!?

Further to some of the above, often add short bits to the end of stories which I don't feel are worth a whole one on their own, particularly when it's busy newswise, like it's been for the last day or so.

Good luck Connor hope this is the kick that you need to get you started this season and keep your feet on the ground and your head out of the clouds and show us who you are on the pitch

I don't go in for this young player hype, Connor I agree looks promising but as yet has failed to deliver both consistency and goals. I recall a certain Dean Bowditch being trailed by Man Utd and touted as the new Teddy Sheringham & it went to his head, he lost his touch and is now playing for Yeovil.
Hope Connor comes good for us, we badly need a regular goalscorer!!!

The bit a bout the Cobbold brothers is true, they were legends, but it was a different era and sadly times have changed.

He played well when he came on for the U21's. Lets hope that it's a sign of things to come, COYB!

in reference to the paul comment:

football has changed during the years since the cobbolds and the robson era, does it bother me ME doesnt publiclly show his face? no not really. in the current financial climate of clubs going into admin and some close to cease trading im glad that our club for the moment is stable, we are not risking the clubs future by needlessly throwing money at players hoping to get promoted on a gamble and that we do infact have british owners wrather than some random consortium from uzbekistahn or some such country.
