Keane Looking to Add Strikers to Squad
Keane Looking to Add Strikers to Squad
Thursday, 16th Dec 2010 17:44

Boss Roy Keane says he will be looking to add to his striking ranks when the transfer window opens in January. The Town manager feels the Blues have found goals hard to come by throughout his time at Portman Road.

Keane says he’ll have to look at bringing in loan or permanent attacking signings in the new year: “I think I’ve been more than loyal to the strikers. I think Rory Fallon actually did quite well for us last week, a boy just coming in on loan. Jason started and Priskin came off the bench last weekend.

“But we still don’t score enough goals. That’s not necessarily down to your strikers, but it does help if one or two of your strikers are more of a goal threat. When they get the chances they’ve got to take them.

“I watch matches every week and teams get half the chances we get and it’s in the back of the net, whereas we seem to get four or five chances and even then don’t take them. And unless you put the ball in the back of the net, you’re going nowhere.”

The Town manager says he is yet to hold talks regarding the January budget and targets, although chief executive Simon Clegg has already confirmed that funds will be available: "Every window that we have gone into we have invested in the playing squad and I don't see that changing in January.

"If the manager wants to bring in players in January then he will have the opportunity to do that."

Karlosfandangal - let us be serious here about Wickham. Wickham has undoubted potential but is he really worth 8m ?? If Chopra is worth 3m in today's market, what makes you think any Premier League club will pay 8m for an untried Championship player who has not scored this season? If Wickham does leave, you can bet your last quid that the fee will be "undisclosed". And it will be nearer to 2m than 8m !!!!

So, he's got you side-tracked!
His prejudices leave Wickham, Townshend and Priskin wondering what next.

Adam Le Fondre must be worth a punt. Had enough loanees, about time we took a chance on a proven goalscorer from the lower leagues

Its the way we play that means we dont score enough goals, negative tactics, constantly changing personnel and possibly poor coaching/management. Also the fact that the strikers are in and out of the team and rarely play for 90 minutes has hardly helped their confidence which must be at rock bottom. Just buying more strikers will not necessarily make things better and could lead to even more team changes each match as Keane struggles to get the right combination.
I think perhaps a change in tactics and having a run in the team will lead to our current strikers scoring goals

Yep Stead or Rhodes would be ideal. Wish we had a manager who didn't sell key players unnecessarily.

Runaround, couldnt agree more. Whilst we persist with such negative tactics & playing with so few offensive options, any poor sod that we got in upfront would struggle. Had same problem last season, & now we have a whole raft of new striking options, the net result is the same. Surely not a coincidence? Why not try the novel idea of playing Scotland in his rightful position, that would help his game surely? He is certainly not a link man, a number ten if u will. We also need to deploy more attacking full backs & midfielders willing (or allowed) to break forward & support. We are far too easy to defend against. We can throw more strikers at it, keane's default solution is to keep changing personnel. Surely Evans & clegg must begin to wonder what sort of a manager/coach they have who does neither?

keane is just not good enough.. we don t need new players.. the players we have are plenty good enough.. its the management, coaching, tactics that are not up to much.. evans must be pretty thick to think that whats on show is what we come to watch and is gonna get us to the promise land.. i d prefer to go to Jaywick on holiday than portman rd at the moment..

We knew that we needed a striker in the summer, and if we couldn't get one now I would be surprised if we could in January by when we will probably be in the relegation zone if Keane is still in charge.

Keane's record with strikers in woeful, spending close to £5M on Scotland, Priskin and Martin (the latter was talked up as a striker when he joined). Re. loanees, Murphy was OK, Healy was a flop, John did not impress and Fallon looks awful. He sold Rhodes for "up to" £850K and he has scored 27 in 64 for Huddersfield. He sold Stead for £250K and he has scored 5 in 14 for Bristol City. I don't mind the loaning out of Lisbie and Counago and they have not done much, although the latter had more vision that most of the current crop.

Oh for a decent manager like Joe Royle who unearthed Kuqi and Lee for peanuts at a time we needed them.

Keane should'nt be thinking about the transfer window yet he has got a massive job in turning this club around. I'm not sure you will be in a job by then so leave the new striker decision to the new manager.

why cant we forget Rhodes? I really believe this was one decision out of Keanes hands - his dad was sacked as goalkeeping coach and i honestly think he was intrumental in moving Rhodes. No i am not behind Keane, i too want him out but i really wish people would be a little less blinkered about some decisions, at the end of the day he has not spent well and a few have gone who should have stayed (David Wright??) but i honestly dont think Keane would have let Rhodes go without there being other underlying reasons.

It doesn't matter who we get in as a striker we won't get goals unlike we set up as an attacking side AND let players have a run of games together. Week in and week out changes to the side don't bring understanding on the field. Scotland will score goals in the box if we get into attacking positions.

We need a settled team, we already have all the players we need.

Yet again, I'm scared by how naive our manager is. If it doesn't work he signs more players. Please don't let him sign any more. He's already brought in 22 in 18 months. It's crazy!

Why can't he see that playing centre backs across the defence, rooting the midfield, not allowing them forward and playing defensive wide players, who aren't actually wide players at all is the reason we are not scoring, not thre personnel!

Yet another terribly blinkered view from Mr Keane.

The only striker we could get who could score from the lack of decent opportunities we provide would be an international class player, not some prem reject or league 1 player.

alfromcol totally agree, i think where he got it wrong (and what do i know i am only a woman!) BUT he played scotland as the creater and Prisken in the box. prisken is the one with the creativity and speed so swap them two around and it may just work. Prisken creating and Scotland not having to run very much (cause that isnt his strong point) but just there in the box to bang them in???? how often has our box been emtpy as Scotland wasnt fast enough to get into a scoring position and Prisken was out wide creating?

Lunatic, Fallon's dad was once part of a management duo that qualfied a nation for World Cup.

Good Lord man, surely you're not suggesting what I don't actually think you're suggesting??

Or are you? as Homer Simpson might say, :P.
