Keane: Priskin Needed to Make More of an Impact
Keane: Priskin Needed to Make More of an Impact
Friday, 17th Dec 2010 15:09

Town boss Roy Keane says striker Tamás Priskin could have made more of an impact after coming off the bench at Preston last week. The Blues manager says strikers coming on as subs should aim to emulate his former Manchester United team-mate Ole Gunnar Solskjær.

Keane says the Hungarian international, who was left out at Preston having missed a number of opportunities against Swansea, was given enough time to make an impression at Deepdale: “Tamás Priskin had 20-25 minutes last week and you can do a lot in that time.”

The Blues boss says players throughout football appear increasingly reluctant to be subs: “Some people in this modern game — and we saw it last weekend — some players don’t like or want to be sub, which is crazy.

“They go on the pitch and they show you that they’re upset by their body language, not just at our club, it goes on at lots of clubs. It was an important learning weekend for me in terms of the players I’m working with. Lads who want to play and lads who certainly don’t want to be sub.”

Keane says he doesn’t mind players being annoyed at not being in the starting line-up as long as they do their job when they do get on: “You don’t mind a player being grumpy but they seem to bring that grumpiness on to the pitch with them instead of going out there and doing the business.

“There are a lot of big egos out there and some players don’t think they should be on the bench. When they do get on, they don’t really want to do the business because they’re upset with the manager because they’re on the bench.”

The Irishman believes one of his former team-mates had the perfect attitude to being a sub: “When come off the bench you can still influence a game. The greatest example of that, the best player coming off the bench in the history of the Premiership was Ole Gunnar Solskjær.

“There was a player everyone could learn from. The number of disappointments that boy had. He would score one or two goals and be on the bench the following week.

“When he came on, he didn’t come on feeling sorry for himself, thinking the manager’s a whatever. He came on and did the business and scored.”

What on earth is he on about? Why did he drop him in the first place? He has looked the most lively player in the last few games and then he drops him, where as Jason Scotland gets tired after 20 minutes and Fallon just seems to wonder about. I think Priskin is actually our best striker at this club at the moment and Keane drops him, very weird.

Agree we do need service from midfield, However he does miss most of his chances that he gets,I was hoping that Scotland would be the 20 a season as well as Wickham and Priskin coming on to give us that different angle.
For one reason or another this has not happened

Ole Gunnar Solskjær was happy to come on as sub in a top top team, where the other players were world class. ITFC currently don't have those world class players to keep Priskin on the Bench. Most people if they were Priskin would be pi*sed off if they were relegated to the bench as a sub after a good performance. And watched the game with a Div 1 non striker taking their place.

Another example of Keane's man management or lack of it.

Moan moan moan.I agree with Roy on this one. Priskin is well known to sulk. Did an outstanding player like Solskjær sulk when on the bench? All well and good people say 'you can't compare the two' - but point is, if a great player like that can take it and STILL perform when required, then surely we can expect the same from Priskin?

Also, I hate to remind people but actually Fallon was one of the best players for us last week so stupid comments like 'Being dropped for Fallon is an insult', is utter rubbish. Priksin has failed to score in what 8 now? That said Scotland has been poor as well, but has more aggression than Tamas.

Bottom line is all of our strikers are pretty poor and none are scoring regularly but, as has been said on here by others Priskin is the best of the lot. You shouldn't be slating him for being pissed off at being left out the team, you should be holding your hands up and saying I got it wrong...AGAIN!!! And to publicly criticise him like this, good confidence building Roy, way to 'put an arm around the shoulder'. To be honest though this type of drivel from Keane doesn't surpirse me anymore, its just getting boring, games are boring, im bored, we're all bored. Now its the board that needs to something about it.

Yours is the biggest ego Keane - that's why you haven't done the decent thing and left the club ! Priskin has been messed about by you - he has been out on loan - dropped - played - subbed etc . You are an expert at demoralising players and destroying their confidence . The only people who are " grumpy " are fans having to put up with you ! Not for much longer I hope !

I was convinced that Monday would mark the end of Keane's sorry tenure, but alas, after his time away he said he wouldn't quit. The more I have read this week, the more I am convinced that he knows the end is near and these comments seem to be a deliberate provocation of us, the fans, who just want to watch some decent football, as well as ME. He just seems to be saying "If you want rid of me, sack me. Otherwise, I don't care what people think, I'll sit it out" I'll give you this, Roy, your skin is thick.

The knives are out, so .... FORK !!

JetaimePeters - "At least he gets in the positions to miss." Sure, that is what all clubs pay their strikers to do. Get into positions & miss.
Goals win games. He is a striker, he is not scoring, nor creating assists (Norwich game aside). Keane has every right to drop him to the bench. Unfortunately I now want Keane out too, but lets not turn every single thing he does into this massive negative debate. If Priskin so desperately wants to start, he needs to take his chances and score. He's had enough chances and not done much with them (Again, forget MOM awards, he still hasn't been scoring) so it's about time someone else got a run out. I'm with Keane on this one.

Priskin is not world class but given the service and support i would consider him one of the better strikers in this league (not the best) any striker left up front on his own and only being fed up and unders will not score goals!! this manager honestly is one of the worst i have ever come across in football. He is looking for a scape goat to defend what NO ONE realistically can defend, six losses on the trot and after 18 months there is no escuse you IRISH C>>T!!!! and i have not even mentioned the damage you have done in getting rid of decent back room staff, selling some decent players, replacing them with utter rubbish(fallon? who the f..k is really gonna support that signing?) and tactics and form selections?? what planet is this C>>T on. Please wake up people we can get this C>>T out if we really get on his back, Priskin over Keane any day!!!!

Mark - good questions, and not even the 'Keane Clones' (they know who they are) could give you valid answers - in fact no one of sane mind could.
The man himself is far too contentious, and certainly not hungry enough, for anything to be of concern to him - all there for EVERYONE to see if they choose to do so.

Whoppit - I'm fairly sure you never go to matches but this league isn't so bad I can tell you. It's actually a pretty exciting league to be in. Obviously we all want the team to progress and Premier League football is the ultimate goal. Still, what a glory hunter you are. I suppose you'll start to come to matches as well if we make the Prem. Go cheer for Chelsea or whoever - you'll get far more customer satisfaction and can get to see far more games via sky sports.
