Doncaster Match Off
Doncaster Match Off
Monday, 27th Dec 2010 11:13

Tuesday’s game at Doncaster has been postponed due to a frozen pitch. A pitch inspection was held at 10.30am and it was quickly decided that the Keepmoat Stadium surface would be unplayable.

Rovers manager Sean O'Driscoll and director of football Mickey Walker were at the inspection with Walker commenting: "In all my years in football, I have not seen a playing surface as solid as the one we have here at the Keepmoat."

Doncaster chairman John Ryan said last Wednesday that his groundstaff would “have it all on” to get the game played.

Thanks for the early decision Doncaster, glad I didn't leave early! Haha oh well the team certainly shouldn't be tired when we go to Coventry.

This early decsion was taken mainly for the benefit of the players travel arangements - not the fans i think ! But at least we now all know.

This past fortnight is either a ringing endorsement for enforcing clubs when they reach a certain level to have to invest sufficiently in their grounds to make winter games go-ahead (I'm thinking more Premier League, e.g. Blackpool). Or just have a winter break for three weeks.

IpsRich - totally agree. I think it's unlikely a number of clubs can afford to upgrade their grounds - so with most of the first/second division games being called off - plus high profile PL and Championship clubs failing as well - it must surely call for a winter break.

Thanks for the early info Doncaster - at least they make the necessary early arrangements and raise issues with the pitch in good time!!

Is this really such a good reason why we should have a winter break? Our weather isn't so predictable that this happens in December every year - you could end up having over a month without games if a cold snap comes just as the winter break is ending.

Damn it, already got as far as Peterborough.

These two call offs could be a blessing in disguise, when we eventually play them we'll have a stronger squad.

All very well calling for a winter break but when do you have it. Nov, Dec, Jan Feb, March. Its a non starter I'm afraid. Lets hope MaCauley will be fit and raring to go for the re-arranged matches but looks like a hectic run in now. Be interesting to see which players will have gone when we do play the games.

IpsRich, we couldnt have a winter break in this country as we never know when we'd have the bad weather. This season it's been December, last season would have been late January/early February. Other years we've never been affected at all. The weather in the UK to predict. If we implemented a break in December, we would end up being clobbered for snow in February etc!

When's McAuley back anyway?

Winter break ? - sound idea, but a non starter for obvious reasons, as mentioned in earlier posts.

Good to see an early inspection and plenty of notice for the fans.

I don't want a winter break, especially over Christmas and New Year as football is part of the seasonal entertainment and attendances are usually good due to so many people being off work over these Bank Holidays. We've had a couple of cold winters, but the previous 20 or so have been quite mild. The average night time low temperatures in January (2C), February (2C) and even March (3C) are colder than December (4C).

So, our next match is on 1st January. Keane said last week that January is a long way off! Have the owner, Chief Exec and manager finally had discussions about the plans for the transfer market for the January window?! It makes me feel rather unwell to think that Keane will be making decisions about the future of our club, but if they are going to leave him in charge then they do all need to plan properly for our future and sort out the January targets.

Damn. After 18 months in the United Arab Emirates I am in Doncaster for a week visiting family before heading back to the sand. Damn.

Hopefully a good thing for the club.Time to concentrate on football matters (David Norris and Gareth McAuley- contracts) rather than on games. We need to urgently tie up the contracts of some of our key players.
If not,- January will bring superior offers from other clubs. You can guarantee teams like Cardiff/QPR and even Norwich will offer better contracts to McAuley than we can!
Its more important to solidify these contracts than new signings.
Get Eastman, Lavery, Carson and Civelli some games out on loan.
Get Cropper into the first team squad and get him used to his team mates.
Looks like Keane is going nowhere. We have to hope this club has a future. Noticeably Southampton/Charlton all lost key players when trying to resign and look where they are now.....
Charlton fans love Lee Martin btw

Fallon should have a permanent contract. He could turn out to be our key target player this season.

Mark added 14:02 - Dec 27
Fallon has had a couple of decent games, but he has not scored for us and I don't think he has done enough to warrant buying him (another transfer fee to pay and wage to take on). His goal scoring record at Plymouth was only 1 in 7. He will be 29 in March and isn't going to get better. Remember we didn't think Daryl Murphy was quite good enough to keep and he scored 6 in 18 for us. I'd rather see a younger striker with a good goal scoring record signed from the lower leagues.

ive seen a few points against a winter break, so i thought id give a few points for.
a) the conjested fixture list is ridculous. to ask clubs to organise and play that many games in sucj short a time, then to carry on with a fast and physical english game as if nothing has happened is just short of madness
b) it would help the national team (the likes of lampard and stevie g played 55 games before going to the world cup) maybe one of the reasons (just one) the england side is so poor at the moment)
c)most of the lower league games have been called off anyway (heard a lot of people moaning on here bout the watford game, just to make my point)
d) as alredy mentioned, the english game id fast paced and pysical.would give the players a much needed rest
e) would reduce injuy casued by fatigue
f)most of the major european countrys (holland germany france) do it and look how much it helps them in terms of a footballing power)
g) would stop farcical games like the lecister game going ahead
h)3 weeks extra onto a season
just a few points for. :)

This makes the late boxing day call off look even more stupid, so Doncaster rovers can make a sensible early call but not the mighty itfc what a joke the club has become

Always going to be the outcome, good to see the decision has been made early.

I was dredding this decision, not only when when the Watford game was called off, or when i was on my way to the airport in Kirkwall but also when i noticed there was a pitch inspection when sitting in Edinburgh airport last night waiting for my delayed flight. Oh well, at least we didn't have to travel up to the game to find it called off and it gives me the excuse for another trip down sooner rather than later!!!

Atleast we'll have our new striker by when we play it.
