QPR's Derry Confirms He Almost Joined Town
QPR's Derry Confirms He Almost Joined Town
Wednesday, 5th Jan 2011 09:03

QPR midfielder Shaun Derry has confirmed that he was close to joining the Blues in the summer. The 33-year-old, who was out of contract at Crystal Palace at the end of last season, says Town boss Roy Keane made a “huge impression” on him but that he was unable to agree terms at Portman Road.

Derry, who has been a key man for the league leaders this season, said: “I was close to joining Ipswich. I met Roy Keane and he made a huge impression on me.”

The club’s failure to sign Derry has been a source of frustration for Keane throughout the season, the Irishman outlining the situation in August: “Ten weeks ago, I had a player in my office who would have signed that afternoon, but we couldn’t do a deal for him. He’s now playing for a good team and doing well,” said Keane, who later confirmed that Derry was the player involved.

The former Sheffield United and Leeds man similarly says that the move broke down after unsuccessful contract negotiations with Town’s money men before he was reunited with one of his former bosses in West London: “You’ve hit the nail on the head there.

“Fate took me to Loftus Road and I couldn’t be happier. I also have the utmost respect for Neil Warnock. He’s the one who gave me a chance when I was in the wilderness at Leeds and I felt I owed him. It was a tough decision to make but I am satisfied that I made the right one.”

We're all to blame, especially as we all live in a negative, small minded and miserable Town. ME is offsetting losses against his business tax liabilities as well as picking up repayments on ITFC debts that he owns. Simon Clegg is a public school educated quangocrat. He hasn't a clue about business, football or PR. Roy Keane is only able to buy his way out of a division, (just like Houghton who luckily had a premiership squad). Things have moved on in this division and 10 million won't buy you mid-table security. Portman Road is an experince I can do without at the moment, with dire football, expensive tickets and second rate hospitality. Ipswich town have got to make going to a match an enjoyable experience and that starts with the football but we all know that the setup at the club is rotten. The club could look up the road and see how to get the fans behind them.

ipswich cannot attract good players, havent been able to for years, other clubs obviously paying more than us, thats not keanes fault but how it is at the moment.

Norwich City are 2nd in the league using a team built upon inspirational management with a maximum wage less than half of what our players get
( this i know for a fact ) If they can do it without £25,000 per week + players like Derry & chopra etc then so could we - IF we had the right man in charge.

Cheque book managers are ok - if they actually GET the cheque book - and M.E. is clearly far too tight fisted to accomodate such a man, so let us forget those with dillusions of grandeur - however illustrious their past - and bring on BIG SAM, a down to earth manager who knows how to trawl up the very best from wherever he can get it

I don't think this comes as any surprise. I think most people recognise that it's not all Roy's fault and that Clegg has to take a lot of the blame for our current prediciment. Clegg's lack of football knowledge is a real issue.

In all honesty I dont see what the point in Clegg is, other than the middle man between our hapless manager and our faceless owner. But also I don't see what he does wrong, when it comes to completing a signing and the wages are too high, what more can he do other than pass on the message from M.E 'sorry you're too expensive'. I blame keane completely for the demise of our club, other than the appointment of him by the two above him. Reasons being the complete change of the club in sense of being a family one, and the obvious change in footballing terms, going totally against what ipswich is all about. Why do you think he plays full backs that won't cross the half way either line because they're under strict instructions not to, or because they're actually centre backs. And the same mould of question about the winger situation, why play central players out there who will only come inside and clog up the midfield, and why send back the most natural and best winger we've had at the club recently to Tottenham. Why sell the players who, you cannot deny, are best suited to playing football on the deck. And lastly why play two strikers like rory fallon and Connor wickham upfront, who are the players in most need of crosses coming into the box from wide?! It's all truly bizarre and all anti-ipswich mentality, going against what we're all about.

Fair enough, RK identified a player but the club didn't do the deal, but unless we are told why the club didn't do the deal (and we probably wont be) all we can do is speculate and pass blame. Personally, I think we offered £X (in line with our wage structure) and then QPR offered £X+Y. Derry is approaching the end of his career and took the financially better offer, and who could blame him? Not RK's fault and not the club's fault for sticking to the wage structure, which is more than generous enough...
