Jewell: Effort and Commitment There But Players Anxious
Jewell: Effort and Commitment There But Players Anxious
Saturday, 15th Jan 2011 18:00

New boss Paul Jewell was pleased with his team’s effort and commitment but felt they were anxious when they had the ball. The former Wigan and Bradford manager’s first Town game ended in a 2-1 defeat at Millwall.

Jewell said: “There was plenty of effort, you can’t fault the commitment and effort of the players but we were just a bit anxious in possession.

“I don’t think the goal just before half-time changed the game but if we’d gone in 1-0 up it would have given us something to hang on to.”

The new manager wants his team to be more positive: “We’ve got to be more on the front foot, we’re just a little bit anxious, a little bit edgy. We’ve got more time on the ball, we’re trying to play balls too quickly.

“But I’ve had one day’s training with them, so at least next week we can have a full week and try and get some work into them.”

Jewell says tiredness may have come into the Blues’ performance in the second half in the wake of the Arsenal and Chelsea matches: “It wasn’t just Wednesday, they played Sunday as well at Chelsea and got a bit of a run around.

“That came into my consideration, but I thought they were on such a high after the result against Arsenal that they’d want to play on the Saturday.

“I don’t think the players or myself would use that as an excuse and anyway we finished quite strongly and had two chances in the last couple of minutes. The keeper made two good saves.”

The first Millwall goal was Jewell’s biggest annoyance: “We were disappointed with the timing of the first goal, in first half injury time. I don’t know whether their second goal was offside, it looked it, but whether it was, I don’t know.”

Lions boss Kenny Jackett was pleased with the victory: "Every win is a good win but the commitment of the players was terrific and I felt that despite a few hairy moments, we deserved to win the game.

"We conceded against the run of play and Ipswich are a good defensive team and they showed that against Arsenal and again against us.

"For us they were hard to break down and that makes it an even better win so I'm pleased.

"It was a key goal by Danny Schofield because we started well and had chances, but we wobbled after their goal so that goal not only brought us back in to the game but gave the players and supporters a lot of encouragement for the second half."

Keanish - couldn't agree more! I'm willing to walk out of every game with no voice left at all. Unfortunately it seems I (like you) are in a minority. It annoys the hell out me when people nearby me, just sit down and moan about people showing passion and trying to inspire the team! The 90 minutes thing is important too! There is a quick initial spell of singing at the start of the game, but it all too soon quietens down to nothing!

I was actually moaned at for someone missing a close attempt on goal when I prematurely jumped in anticipation of celebrating while they just sat there like a window-licking mute! Wake up Ipswich fans (not all of you) and get behind YOUR team!

As far as I can see (as a life-long Town fan and, for that matter football fan...) none of us knows how it's going to turn out with PJ.
I am definitely relieved that Keane has gone and it feels almost as if a weight has been lifted off us all...
Now PJ is in and guess as we might, huff and puff as we might and hope and dream as we might we JUST DON'T KNOW IF HE'LL BE GOOD OR NOT!!!

Having said which, this also means that there is little to no point whatsoever in moaning about him at this stage. Instead, we need to take the longer view (IMHO) and just enjoy the rest of our Keane-Free season; consolidate our position in the Championship and then and only then consider where we might be able to ultimately go once the new season begins.

I don't know whether PJ will succeed or not, what I can say is that I am a LOT happier now that he is at the helm with his positive outlook, his fan-friendly interviews and his realistic appraisal of our, let's face it, rather dire situation gifted us by the not-lamented Mr Keane...

COYB and welcome to Ipswich Mr Jewell - may you once again bring lustre to the rather dusty and long neglected gem that is ITFC...

Why don't the PJ Moaners pi$$ off up the road and follow Naarwich. It's fans like you that could drag this club down.

So, it's not okay for Roy to lose - but it's okay for Jewell? As I said in a previous post, we must get behind him BUT he doesn't have a lot of games to get it right. We are completely in the ~~~~ !! Three points off relegation. There is one thing giving the new manager time - quite another allowing him time to get us relegated! THIS IS NOT JEWELL'S FAULT - just to make it clear. BUT we need new players - is he in a position to achieve that? Can he do a better job than Roy? All these questions need to be answered. We can only judge on results and so far a loss is a loss. End of.

Dissapointed by the result but you could tell in the second half that there were a lot of sluggish legs out there. I think we will find out what Jewell can do in the next few games after he has got to know his right team and his squad, i hope we can start to move up the table and get around the top 10 by the end of the season if we can start doing that then i would be a lot more confident for the future under Jewell.

Got to give Jewell until the end of the season before you can realistically judge his performance. Okay, we got beat off Millwall and I am sure that Jewell knows he has lots of work to do. I think it was the result we needed after the Arsenal game and gave some of our fans a quick trip back to Earth. Yes, we won 1-0 and it will be long remembered but don't forget, Arsenal could shift 5 or 6 past us in the second leg. Feet on the ground people and remain cautiously optimistic !!!

here me out, while its never good to lose any match, losing at millwall will show jewell the real ipswich not the over-performed ipswich against arsenal, now he can see what it is going to take to get us out of the trouble we are in,good luck pj you will need every ounce to get the blues out of the mess we are in.

I could not agree more STOOFER. Anyone bleeding blue when they are cut hates to lose a match, even a friendly; but we must all be patient. Some may say we were patient with Keano which is true we were, but we must understand that PJ will probably need longer due to our present state. We do not want knee jerk purchases of moderate players just to fulfil the lust of short minded people. This is going to be a long haul as PJ has to repair a considerable amount of damage and then start to build for success. I hate to say that we may well go down, but many teams have done this and come back all the stronger. The last thing the fans need now is negativity from other fans, we must be positve and push in the same direction so this tranmits to the players on a match day. Keep the faith and COYB!!!!!

Spot on paul, somebody with time on the ball comfortable in possession, a creative central midfielder in the owen garvan mould but a bit quicker. Will make the rest of the team tick. Danny heagan ian collard, Colin viljoen Brian Hamilton,Arnold Muhren, Frans Thijssen, jason Dozell, jim magilton, Keiron dyer,we have had a few who could open up a defence over the years. Please

viljoen67 agree and a nice pacer winger (townsend??!) to worry the full backs! I dont agree with the comment about going down though from a prefious poster, yes some like Norwich have grown from it but other big teams have been stuck down in league one for a few seasons. I dont think it will get to that though. Palace and Preston will go down for sure, so only one place left and i do think with scunthorpe, Shef U, Bristol City etc there are still worse teams than us. we do need to start winning or even drawing a few games. To stay up i think we need 54 points ish, that means we have to get 26 points which is an average of just over 1 point a game. surely Jewell can get enough from this squad for that?

.... this will eventually end up as a 'head bangers ball' because sensible and logical people will stop posting on here - I cannot believe that some people just DO NOT understand the difference between so called MOANING and making REALISTIC COMMENT.

Pathetic, absolutely pathetic.

Jas0999- I see you always refer to Roy Keane as "Roy" and to Paul Jewell as "Jewell". Are you related to him or know him personally? I know you were a massive keane fan but surely you can now see how bad he has been for us? It seems as though you are bitter that your beloved "Roy" got sacked.
And to answer your question about whether "Jewell" can do any better - my mum could do better than "Roy". The man was a shambles.
