Jewell Confident of Making Signings
Jewell Confident of Making Signings
Friday, 28th Jan 2011 14:03

Town boss Paul Jewell says he’s hopeful that he can add to his squad before the transfer window closes on Monday. So far midfielder Jimmy Bullard is the Blues' only January signing, the 32-year-old joining on loan until the end of the season.

Jewell told the club site: "We're hopeful of doing something before the deadline. We're trying to help the squad and improve it.

"Players themselves are always looking for the squad to be strengthened and hopefully we can add to the options we have. I think the more options we've got, the happier everyone will be."

Town appear to have missed out on signing Swindon’s Charlie Austin, who has reportedly agreed to join Burnley, while Luton’s Andy Drury is a target with Coventry and Sheffield United also interested in the 27-year-old midfielder.

The only thing that I am confident of is that I feel let down by my Football Club yet again and fully expect to be feeling that way also at the close of the transfer window, I've experienced it so many times before, I am beginning to lose faith and interest, something needs to change soon.

So disappointing not to get Austin, especially to lose out against a club like burnley. He would have scored 15+ potential promotion winning goals for us next season. We dont know all the facts and figures as to why this deal didnt go through so its hard to blame anyone but its blatantly obvious that we need a director of football to help encourage these kind of players to sign for us.A Joe Royle,Bryan Hamilton type figure to get these players to believe they are signing for a club that is going forward.

I don't know why some are having a go at ME. Where would we be if he had not come along?????

We need to make permanent signings. As most TWTD posters stated in Roy's time - loans are no good. But with Clegg in charge ...

Let down yet again....Thanks ITFC!
Show some ambition and pay the going rate for these players!!!
I have since heard that the deal with Norris will be done next week.....With Portsmouth!
PJ is just papering over the massive cracks in this club, feel sorry for him. Maybe he ought to have a work with Keane and find out why loads of other deals didnt get done...Clegg is the weak link in all this, always has been , always will be!

PJ can identify and interest all the players he likes but 99 times out of 100 Clegg will muck up any negotiations.

We seem to forget that the club is still something like 40 million in debt - just that we owe ME not a bank. I'm actually pretty pleased we have a wage structure (even if we miss out on some players), and glad that we've got a manager who seems to know a good player when he sees one (no offence meant to Rory Fallon).

pitseablue:

Because most of the posters are clueless on how to run a business(modern football club). ME is sensible, you can't throw big wages around you nowadays and you can't compare us to Burnley with parachute money. The most important signing this transfer window will be PJ. We should get ME and SC credit for appointing him instead!

Listen its the manager who gets the players to come here which keeps happening.
It's up to Clegg to sell the club and get deals done!
If he spent more time doing what he is paid to do instead of fannying about with the 2012 Brazil team then we would be in a better place!
Look at when we signed our keeper under keane, It took the best part of a week and a half!
We will never be in the big time again we just dont have any clout anymore

Legend - are you smoking something today ??

keaneswede - spot on my son , so many people on here seem to look at this and based on NO facts , evidence - blame ME,SC anyone .
Leg end - answer me this - If two companies wanted you to work for them - and one paid X and the other X ++++ and you knew the Manager where would you go ?

Or that Burnley could offer a higher wage? Coul'd be as simple as that... Or that they have a better team who currently isnt involved in a relegation fight (see us)..

We could always go back for Fallon!

I think many on here should stick with sucking their thumbs when they dont get their way rather than boring us with stupid attempts at composing posts!

Burnley have parachute payments to throw at transfers so can offer a bigger signing on fee that us. Bigger signing on fee means more money for the AGENT!!

Agents will eventually be the death of football!

blue-herts if ITFC had any ambition we would have snapped him up and offered him the going rate in wages, whu do you think Norris wants out hey? Because the club had failed to offer him and G-mac a new contract which should have been sorted out months ago so whose fault is that then?
you cant get out of this division on 30+ year old loan players and kids!
face facts we are not a big club anymore! Cardiff, swansea, Forest, Leeds, leicester etc are clubs with ambition and will go places!
We lack drive and ambition and that is why we are in a relegation scrap and fans are dropping by the thousands every home game!

Legoman posted an astute comment earlier on today along the lines that it was brave of ME to make a stand against inflated and implausible wage demands but he also stated that you can't do this by yourself because you slip behind everyone else ( apologies if i havent got it quite right ). We shouldnt be held to ransom by players demands and there is no way that you can pay Austin more than Whickham who is a regular in the England team and reportedly interesting Premier clubs.

However you do have to have a plan b which has got to be the recruitment and nurturing of young talent and show youngsters that its worthwhile coming to PR in terms of their career development.

Secondly why even bother talking to players like Chopra when you know that you are never going to agree terms. Why agree to pay £20 g to a club that is skint for Bullard when we are doing them the favour. I doubt that Palace and Millwall are paying 40% of the wages for Pablo and Lisbie and we also go and sell Stead for £250 g. We always seem to be getting turned over and something is clearly wrong and so on that basis , goodbye Colonel Clegg. His job needs to be given to someone who has a better background in footballing matters and in being the pr link between the fans and ME.

We all want the best for our club - whether that be PJ, SC, ME or the fans. PJ has said he would like to bring in new players and I welcome that news. What worries me is that we have 21 players who could be with new clubs come the summer and an 'apparent' wage structure in place that makes it difficult to attract the better players from the lower leagues. If this is true how are we going to assemble a side able to compete in the Championship? I would hope that this saga makes the management ask if the wage structure that currently exists is going to allow us to reach the targets that everyone associated with this club aspires to.

A player who will score shed loads of goals is worth taking a gamble on and paying 15k-20k a week in todays standards. I have heard that ITFC offered the lad just a tad more than what he was on at Swindon. If that is the case then Paul Jewell id doomed already.
Ambition? yeah right. Prove it then ITFC!!

for heavens sake people, get a grip. the only fault 2 be laid over this deal not being done is with austin & his agent who clearly have a very high opinion of him. the fact is that we have a wage structure(set by ME),so clearly he was asking for much more than that stucture allows. before anyone says we should have given him woteva he ask for, what then happens when the other players all ask for more? yes, we end up back in financial trouble. so get off cleggs back. theres nothing more he could have done.not his fault austin wanted more than we can pay.

Legend - get off the baccy

15 to 20k a week for a 21 year old not proven at Champ level

You really are deluded mate - do you work , do you have any idea how businesses work .. We nearly went under 10 years back due to that belief - It is said people think in Football 15-20k a week is what you need to have to pay to get someone in ... Any club doing that is doomed sunshine
We have a wage structure - we have some decent players at the club and with the CLOWN now gone some positives - why are you banging on about having to pay the most to get unproven players - jeez if u ran a business you probably go broke in a year with that approach
