Jewell: If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It
Jewell: If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It
Saturday, 5th Feb 2011 13:03

Boss Paul Jewell says he takes an ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix’ approach to using substitutes. The new Town manager has kept all of his subs on the bench throughout the side’s last two league games in stark contract to his predecessor Roy Keane who almost always utilised all three.

Jewell said: “I go back to my Liverpool days when there was only one sub and they used to say you pick what you think is your best team. First there were three subs, then five, now there’s seven and you can almost have too much choice.

“I remember when I was manager of Bradford once and we were playing Sheffield United and after 10 minutes this guy behind the dugout wanted me to get Lee Mills off, Darren Moore, Robbie Blake and John Dreyer, and I only had three subs!

“It’s too easy at times to make those decisions. I think if it’s working, sometimes just let it be and not rush into things.

“Sometimes it’s harder not to make changes because people want you to make changes and it’s easy to react to certain situations. I’ll use subs if and when I think they’re relevant.”

Good stuff PJ quite right. Also it will give them confidence that you have belief in them

Well said Mr Jewell. Lets hope for some stability in the team now, something we never had in Mr Keanes regime. Onwards & upwards.

I sort of agree with pj on this but i also think a fresh pair of legs can do wonders. I.e when we are 2 goals up (ok not happened for a while) and a team is going for it against us fresh legs are quicker for the counter attack.

All three subs should always be used. Keeps the game alive and gives the crowd a boost.

@legoman and thus the reason Paul Jewell is the Ipswich manager and not you...

I like Jewell's point of view on this one. How many times did Keane throw on all three substitutes after about an hour, and that was usually after three or four changes to the previous week's line up! Jewell is giving the players belief, and not using subs worked against both Doncaster and Debry - both matches in which we were behind and could have panicked!

Tactical substitutions should only be used for tactical reasons - simples!

not sure i fully agree with PJ on this one. Subs are a vital part of the game. Not wanting to live in the past but look at all those inspired double substitutions featuring Steve Palmer and Gavin Johnson in the 90's. Lyalls double subs changed many a dire game even when we were on top. worked every time. You need to have quality on the bench not just fresh legs... coyb.

I think subs are there for a reason. Injured tired players come off and fresh legs come on.Its a team game and we are playing just like that right now , weldone boys today up the table we go.

Three subs today, including two in stoppage time. It was as if Keane was back. Apart from the 3-0 win, of course...

KEANE AMNESTY: If you were one of the cretins that used to write "In Keane we trust" on this noticeboard with mindless frequency confess now and we will forgive you.

Nice to see Luciano Civelli make a cameo appearance today.Glad to see that we do not make our substitions as quickly into the second half anymore.

I thought it was grear management to bring on Civelli, as he had promised to last week if we were comfortable in the game.
Hopefully his confidence, just from 5 minutes on the pitch will be a catalyst for him to push on!

"they used to say you pick what you think is your best team"

Well, yes but after 18 months Keane did not know what his best team was, which was a problem in itself.
3 wins in a row!! Onwards and upwards with Paul!!
