Jewell: Goals Main Area for Improvement
Jewell: Goals Main Area for Improvement
Thursday, 24th Feb 2011 15:32

Town boss Paul Jewell says he’s generally happy with the way the Blues are playing but says there is one aspect of his team’s play which particularly needs to improve — scoring goals. Despite scoring six times against Doncaster a week ago, Town were unable to turn their overall superiority into goals against Hull City on Saturday and in the first half at QPR on Tuesday.

Jewell said: “We played a lot of good football [at QPR] and for a large part of the game we were the better team, but we’ve got to turn that domination, that possession into chances and goals.

“I’m pleased with lots of aspects but I’m aware we need to improve on lots of aspects as well. Even if we win a game 6-0, like we did last week, we’re always asking and looking for better. We’ll always be pleased but never satisfied.

“I’m pleased with the way we’re playing, but I’m not pleased about us not scoring goals to kill teams off.”

Although Jewell says it’s not only down to the frontmen to score goals, the Blues boss has already said that he’ll be looking to add a 25-goal-a-season striker to his squad in the summer.

I'm looking for him to sign either Danny Graham, or Adam le fondre. Proven Goalscorers, who can get into those postions that currently scotland and priskin don't see. Our build up play is fine, once we start putting those crosses into the box, we need someone who will always put them away

easier said than done, just because someone scores 20 goals one season, doesn't mean they'll score 20 the next, similarly, some muppet might score 3 goals in a season, then bag 25 the next.

Didn't Henry score 2 or 3 goals in 30 games for Monaco, then become a 30 goal a season man?

A goalscorer is hard to find, that's why the proven ones cost lotsadough, picking out a potential one is even harder.

I guess we need to look at the support we give the strikers.

Would scotland or priskin be more effective with Wickham up to next to them?
I'm sure playing 4-1-2-2-1 isn't helping as the front player is spending so much time trying to bring the midfield into the game rather than facing the goal??

Scotland can score 20 goals a season. Just need to play him regularly and give him some help - i.e. Priskin or Wickham up front alongside him. Would like to see us revert to 4-4-2, at least for home games.

Its hard to score regularily with only one up front from open play.
I want to see Murray play. If he is the best finisher at the club than let him show it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
With Bullard, our chances at set piece time has gone up incredibly. We are a danger to teams here.

Get Lambert from Southampton. Fans moaning that Scotland can't hold the ball up this lad can and he knows how to score goals. Definately worth a punt especailly when you think of a certain Grant Holt didn't cut it in the Championship with Forest went down the leagues to learn his trade and on for the third season in a row for 20 goals!

Goals are no problem. Just stick Priskin up front and he will set up and lay off for the rest of the team to score for fun, like he did before Scotland threw his toys out of the pram and Paul caved in!

It's not easy to find the right men for the job! Our last truly effective strike pairing was Bent & Kuqi! That was 6 years ago (seems like yesterday doesn't it!)

A lot will depend on what sort of money is available. The best bet would be to spread the risk rather than put all the eggs in one basket. Hopefully PJ will be able to unearth a gem or two!

I can't believe that some people still think we don't need a striker! Weonly have TWO senior strikers - the better sides have four or five! We have lacked a decent striker for years - as some point out - going back 6 years!

If we really want promotion then we need strikers who regularly perform - not those who score a couple and then go six or seven games without a goal. Sadly, that's exactly what Priskin and Scotland do.

Hopefully we will also sign a right back. It's madness that a club of our size STILL haven't sorted this out. Thought PJ may have signed someone by now. Another week has gone by!

I'd be happy to see the back of Priskin & Scotland to be honest..Priskin misses way too many chances & Scotland's too slow for my liking.

If we can keep hold of Wickham then we obviously need a little playmaker alongside him...Mackail-Smith/Aaron McLean or maybe even Luke Varney - think he's still only on loan at Blackpool & probably wouldn't cost that much.
