Jewell: We Never Looked Like Scoring
Jewell: We Never Looked Like Scoring
Tuesday, 15th Mar 2011 23:03

Town boss Paul Jewell admitted that his side never looked like scoring at one end and gave away silly goals at the other as they lost 3-0 at home to Watford. The Blues manager again bemoaned his side’s lack of penetration.

Jewell said: “I think at the end of the day we gave goals away for fun, silly goals. In between the boxes, I think we probably had more possession than them, but did you think we were really going to score a goal?

“How many crosses did we have flashing across the box? How many freekicks did we have? How many corners? We just haven’t got anyone who wants to get on the end of them, it’s as simple as that.

“You can dress it up which ever way you want. You can dress it up any way you want. We had plenty of possession.

“The second goal summed us up. Pretty passes, then we get brushed off the ball in midfield and the next thing we’re picking the ball out of the back of the net. We’re not ruthless in either box, it’s a simple as that.”

The Blues boss felt the early Watford goal was comical series of errors: “We tell the players to make sure when the ball goes out of play to come alive. It was a silly corner we gave away, the next thing, there’s two-v-one and it was a catalogue of errors.

“From there we were always playing catch-up. We did all right, we had freekicks and hit the post but when it comes out off the post I don’t think anyone was going to stick their head in and get a cut eye.”

Jewell says there’s much to be done before he gets the side he wants: “You can see we lack a bit of pace in the team, even going forward we can’t get beyond players and behind teams, so we’ve got a lot of work to do.

“Against Portsmouth we opened them up for fun but we couldn’t score. But tonight, I was looking at the game at 2-0 down with 15 minutes to go and do I really think we’re going to get back in the game? And the answer is no. That’s eight or nine home games we’ve lost now this season, which tells its own story.”

Watford boss Malky Mackay was delighted with the result and with the early goal: “We started off very well, we highlighted the fact that if we got a short corner we might be able to get the two-v-one.

“We put a great ball in and it starts us off with a great platform and allows us to suck Ipswich on to us and catch them on the counter, which we did well.”

The former Canary inevitably had praise for striker Danny Graham and said there was a row in the dressing room about who scored the first goal: “There’s a big debate down there as to whether that first goal was his or Troy’s. They’re both claiming it!

“I think tonight you could see why Danny is what he is - he’s a total team player. He’ll run a back four down on his own.

“He’s a threat in behind and he’s a threat when he comes short. I think he had an awful lot to do on the second goal and it was a quality finish.

"But the measure of the boy is that he’s a team player and that’s the centre forward that you want in your team - someone who’s not just a poacher but is a team player, and he’s certainly one of those.”

We were crap... to many average players, agree get shot of priskin & scotland, need 2 new strikers, 2 new wing backs with pace, another midfielder to pair up with bullard, & I'd get shot of Fulop too... serious money needs spending in the summer.

Graham, signed from lower league carlisle possibly for peanuts we want some of that!!! Jewells scouting system better be working overtime right now as there is so much to do. Jewell you want speed try jp and o Connor both have speed and commitment, don't give some of those from tonight the pleasure of playing again satgive others a chance and stuck whickham up front!!! Swansea when do you want Scotland ill drive him up myself

Well PJ, if you know we need a striker go and get one, or stop playing one up top on his own with no support. Pace. Try Peters and O'Conner at full back; they will get down the flanks and give you pace. Nice sideways passing with no real penetration or threat. We never really looked like scoring all night.

Worst game I've seen for ages, was p**sed off at half time, it was just like watching any game from the last five years, fifteen passes, no ground made, and then an errant pass, (one of many !), and we're in trouble !

Awful, awful performance, why take Martin off when others were having a far worse game.

How badly does Whickham have to play before he's substituted ??
He was truly terrible tonight, should have been the first one hauled off !

Worst I've felt after a game for a long, long time !

RUBBISH !

I'm not moaning but I really do wish Jewell would play the 442 he keeps saying he wants to, put wickham up top with either priskin or scotland, they're both as useless as each other. Give oconnor a go, and peters. Am I right in thinking peters has not kicked a ball under Paul Jewell?

only players to really come out the game well i think were bullard for the first half and drury who ran all game. mcauley had another sound performance but the likes of kennedy and leadbetter were shocking dyer looked busy but didnt really create to much do but its more minutes under his belt... unfortunatly by the time hes match fit he will be going back to west ham.
0-3 at home to a very avearge championship side is bloody shocking other than graham theres not much to watford at all, the chances they had were generally created by us.

sorry for a negative post, but the lack of any cutting edge or any kind of ability to put up a fight in this town side has finally gotten to me tonight.

i think PJ can turn it about given time and the right support from the board i do think though that we could be suffering from the keane era (or should that be error) hangover for some time

Garv tonight we could have had three or four up front and not scored our strikers are poor we need a holt, graham or sharp without which I don't feel any formation will help. Agree fringe players need a chance in particular those with pace...

@ calmingwind - watford are not an average team. To be honest I know our strikers are poor but I did feel sorry for them up against taylor at the back, theres not much you can do when you've got a big massive rock infront of you the whole game, so big he wins everything in the air and so broad whenever you try to move anywhere you run into him.

I raised an eyebrow when Jewell dropped Peters for the Arsenal return leg after the impact he had has in the home game.

O'Connor and Peters should be given their chances (under jewell) now. They have a chance of being coached and improved as opposed to Edwards Kennedy that are at the wrong end of their careers.

I expect a MASSIVE turnover in the summer, and I think even some of our favourite better players have to be a part of that. I do trust jewell in the transfer market, and as a man manager, we just have to hope that Clegg and Evans are up to the task of supporting him properly.

Have we improved under jewell? I think our potential has improved, but we are only going to realise the benefits of having him after the squad is given the gutting it requires.

Well the honeymoon period is truly over. Ok so we are probably safe from relegation save a terrible result this Saturday against Scunthorpe which i wouldn't bet against
As far as i can see we have a new manager who has done ok.After all without Bullard we would be at least 5 points worse off so thank god for that.
The fall out from Keane is still there and surely questions must be asked of Clegg.?
What does he do?

Totally unacceptable. Poor negative tactics at home will I suspect cost a number of season ticket sales. There can be no excuses - Watford are not world beaters. Very disappointed with our tactics. We are simply not good enough I'm afraid. Also no point PJ bemoaning a lack of threat - he has had ample time to sign a striker. He hasn't. Of course passing the ball back and sideways doesn't help. Very poor.

Sorry bluelady - agree with lots of what you say, but first shot on TARGET tonight was 59 minutes - this simply wasn't good enough!! No excuses.

I get the feeling Jewll has had enough of Priskin - saying no-one attacks the ball in the opposition area was aimed at him. Very true!

Agree..massive overhaul.
O'Connor, Peters and Smith now deserve a chance. I would have given Ronan Murray a try as well and not sent him to Torquay

Garv. -

Your comment about Taylor may have some truth in it, but the game was summed up for me when Edwards, rather than try and take on Taylor out wide right, and go for the by-line, he looked at taylor, turned round and passed back to leadbitter !!!

WTF ??!!

Would you rather he panic buys jas0999? Austin was obviously a greedy **** and didn't come. Jewell obviously wanted a striker in but it didn't happen. Strange how when its not keane in charge you are able to have a good moan.

Priskin had a great season with Watford and scored what, 15 or so goals, so why cant he do that here? its simple, Priskin is not a lone striker, he needs some to feed off of, whilst Priskin also has the touch and the technique to feed a strike partner. I feel sorry for him because he gets ball lumped up to him and he gets groans from the fans, he needs the ball at his feet, thats what he's good at.

Its the same with Scotland, hes a good goal scorer, but again he needs another stiker to play off of. And theres no reason why either Prskin or Scotland cant play with Wickham, build a striker partnership for next season and show a bit more ambition.

We didnt score when we played 4-5-1 . . . . . . . . . . . . . fantastic

Too many over-paid under-achievers left over from the Keane era. Let's struggle to 50+ points and then hope for a busy summer.

A-Ha ! So now it seems like everyone has realised that Priskin is cr*p ! You'd have thought he was bloody Pele after those Arsenal games ! :o)

And quite glad to hear some of the realism on here after the hysteria (In some cases) after PJ took over. We have an extremely ordinary (And in many cases downright cr*p) bunch of players (And that's not pure negativity, i would still support the 'eck out of them when they pull on the shirt - truth is though most of them are not very good). A bit of reflection on Mr. Keane maybe now that PJ is getting pretty much the same results from this group of players ?? To be fair though he did sign half of them ! :o)
