Wickham Up for Young Player Award
Wickham Up for Young Player Award
Thursday, 17th Mar 2011 07:39

Town striker Connor Wickham has been nominated for the Football League Young Player of the Year Award. The 17-year-old is up against Watford’s Will Buckley and Arsenal’s Henri Lansbury, who is on loan at Norwich, for the gong which will be handed out at The Football League Awards on Sunday.

All Football League players aged below 21 at the beginning of the season are eligible for the award. The Football League say the judging panel will be looking to recognise the young player they believe has made the "most significant contribution and impact" during the season.

Wickham has already been nominated in the Championship Apprentice of the Year category at Sunday's awards, which are being held at The Brewery in London.

The full list of nominations in numerous categories can be found here.

Shame but we need to cash in on him to fund at least 2 more strikers and maybe bullards fee and aswell as a right back and centre half. Good news is kd will be a free transfer.

1 win in 7 with Dyer,Bullard and Wickham in the side.
Priskin 9 goals in 60 apperances

put Wickham up front with Martin on the right O'Connor on the left with Peters at right back and if we are still losing ship the lot out and start again.

Re build number 4 this summer, Magilton had a 2 year re build as did Keane and we are still mid table side at best gates have dropped from 26000 to 17000 and yet teams like Norwich and Leicester and QPR have got stronger and better.

But not to worry we will be up there with the rest next season pushing for promotion

Why!? There have been plenty of better players in the football league this year, you can nominate a player for such a recognised award purely on potential?

Connor is a good lad with raw talent, hopefully during pre season they can work on his poor first touch which us heavy at the best of times, also drum it in to him that when he loses the ball he needs to get his head up and chase the ball back - it seems although alot of the time he shrugs his shoulders.

Also his heading is good but needs to improve heading towards goal. If all this can be worked on, he has got to be looking at 20+ goals next term.

Whilst I gag while I say it, but surely if the Scum go up, it will go to Lansbury

Lets not forget that he is just 17 years old (stop and think what that actually means, he only finished secondary school a year ago) and he is one of the first names on the team sheet every week. Yes, he doesn't set the world alight every game, but I would say that overall he is still one of our better players and at times puts players three times his age to shame. The nomination is well deserved, although from what I've seen of Lansbury I think he has had a bigger impact and will probably win it (which imo is a shame because he isn't the product of a championship club).

If Norwich go up and come bottom of the prem they are garenteed a MIN of £80 million over 4 years

If they can do so well on no money think what they can do with that puts us to shame really and very much second best

He's only played a few matches. He did virtually nothing until January. Daft nomination.

Realistically he shouldn't get it, where was he at the start of the season, fair enough injured for some. Agree with souperjim people forget he is 17, my age, that's rediculous to me so he shouldn't be expected to perform every game and I can't think of a recent game where I've thought he's been awful, he was still making runs and putting the ball into the box (that no one got onto the end of). Agree as well lansbury shouldn't get it because he is effectively a premiership player.

God some posters on here love too gain a negative out of a positive !!

Be glad for the lad that he is getting IMO deserved recognition ! At the start of the season he was injuried then was playing catch up under a restrictive Keane. When he did get his chances under Keane he nearly always made an impact.

Against the Arsenal he was outstanding and since then he has worked his butt of for the team out of position on the left and right!
Since these run of games he has still scored and importantly how many times have you seen him in the our box clearing the lines (loads) !!!

These awards are not awarded on potential or the amount of goals he has scored. They are awarded on his TEAM play and alround impact for the TEAM, which he has done very well.

If he wins the young player of the year I for one will be happy ! When was the last time we had a player nominated ? If he does not get it , so be it but it's still good he has been nominated whilst playing for Ipswich Town!

The other award he is up for Apprentceship of the year he should win hands down IMO because how many 17 year olds are doing want he does in the Championship !

Good luck Connor on both nominations , We ( well most) are proud you play for Ipswich Town and you deserve recognition !!!

Why do people keep going on about his age there are plenty of seventeen, eighteen and nineteen yerar olds playing 1st team football if your good enough your old enough!

Wickham should be playing up front - particularly at home! Well done on the nomination - but fear Lansbury will win it.

Lansbury is a Premiership player. I can't see how he can qualify.
And Buckley is clearly inferior to Wickham. Connor should win by default.

My congratulations for being nominated Connor, but my fear once again is that this pushes him further to the centre of the shop window. Good luck to him whatever happens.

Not done enough for me - all I can say is we are very short of good young players in this country - but there again with the number of foreigners about can see why

He doesnt deserve the award but hopefully he will get it and that will push his fee up to around £15m which we will then cash in on and buy a couple of good strikers with experience who will do the business for us and not just keep banging on about Wickham and his age and he will get better!

That's a few more quid on the price tag... good!
He seems ok about the pressure it brings so good on him.
Needs to score more goals. His chance to conversion rate is what matters. Being stuck on the wing is not going to do his goals per game record any good, but it will bring him on as a player in a less pressurised role than central striker.

i can't see how lansbury can get nominated since he's a premiership player .. wickham is undoubtedly a talented prospect but he's hardly played all season .. not exactly matching apples with apples here! .. but all the same good luck connor !

so to help some people out here, who clearly dont understand the system Lansbury is a player PAID by a premership team not playing in the premeirship (if oyu look at this stats he played ONE game in 2006 in the premiership in his career)
Years Team Apps† (Gls)†
2006— Arsenal 1 (0)
2008—2009 → Scunthorpe United (loan) 16 (4)
2009—2010 → Watford (loan) 39 (5)
2010— → Norwich City (loan) 14 (4)

, he has played in the Champsionship this year making him a Championship player so eligible for the award......
