Clegg: Season Ticket Deadline Non-Negotiable
Clegg: Season Ticket Deadline Non-Negotiable
Thursday, 14th Apr 2011 14:51

Town chief executive Simon Clegg has warned that Friday’s early bird season ticket deadline is non-negotiable. Fans wanting to buy season tickets at the cheapest rate have to have their forms handed in by noon tomorrow.

Clegg said: “We are being quite specific and there will be no exceptions. After that the early bird discounts will not be applicably.

“The Ticket Office is quite positive about the response we have received and it is work in progress with a lot of late applications coming in.”

Clegg says that he hopes fans will see Town challenging nearer the top of the table next season: “I see no reason why Ipswich cannot be where Norwich are now in 12 months’ time.

“Since Paul Jewell came in as manager we have averaged 1.65 points a game against 1.10 previously and this bodes well for the future.”

The Blues chief executive says contract negotiations continue with "seven or eight" and admits that matters are taking longer than anticipated: “It’s taking slightly longer than we hoped. We need to know to prepare for next season.

"Paul is very clear he's not going to be held to ransom by any player. He is heavily involved in determining the level we make on the contract negotiations.

"He recognises, like myself, we have the responsibility to run this club within a budget that is acceptable to the owner."

Town have 14,300 season ticket holders for the current season.

And? Difficulty is that those renewing don't actually know what they are paying for / who they will be watching... thus, the reduction / early bird price is the price of risk I suppose.

One problem I think is that you get charged a fee when paying by debit card? What the hell for? Folks buying on DD don't pay an additional cost and you'd think the club would want the cash up front? Credit card fair enough but debit card - taking the Mickey I'm afraid.

I heard the full interview on the radio. Clegg appeared to be implying that fans were lying about the reasons their renewals arrived late. This is surely no way to deal with the fans when ITFC are essentially trying to flog a below average product at a higher price. Quite frankly, I would have thought if several fans wanted to renew on Monday the club would be biting their arm off.

Will be interesting to see what happens if renewals are delayed in the post and the club then want to charge full price. I know what I would do - tell them to forget it!

I suspect the uptake is poor hence the 'quite positive' comment. I know several people who refuse to renew because of a) the dismal past seasons and b) PJ's insistance to play just one up at home.

ITFC need to reach out to the fans and give them a reason to be positive. Cleggs comments will I suspect have the opposite affect. He seems to think the club are in a position to be chosey!

Spot on Muhrens Left Foot - don't renew - we are successful and all the glory hunters come back. This happens not at just ITFC but at every Club. If we are challenging for promotion crowds will be around 20,000 and with the cheap ticket schemes it will be more like 25000. I agree the Clubs stance on the deadline is a tad harsh however we were given plenty of notice for the deadline. Its a bit unfortunate that Clegg is more a business man than a football man but I suspect he is the Marcus Evans mouthpiece and the more we hear about the state of other Clubs in peril of going bust the more grateful I am for Marcus Evans.

Surely its in the interest of the club to extend the deadline?

alfromcol, No I didn't know, why would I write on here if I did. Last season I got a renew letter through the post as I had a season ticket then. Why could they still send me one this time around, not very good marketing.

If u cannot afford or justify the cost - understandable, times are tough.

If u have chosen not to - stop whingeing.

It is cheaper to watch a lot of teams in the Premier League FACTm ITFC is overpriced and when the applications are counted what spin will they come out with next.

I have no issues with the deadline being strict but I think the 'tone' of the message is somewhat harsh. As a season ticket holder for many years (though I haven't held one for the past 3-4 years for family reasons), I'm somewhat bemused that I never received an application pack through the post. My application is in the post - if it arrives late and I'm asked to pay full whack, I won't renew and will pay on a game by game basis as I'm unlikely to be able to get to 23+ games next season even though I'd love to.

Sorry but don't agree with what some people are putting on here. Everybodys circumstances are different, some people just can't make a snap desision like that, with job uncertainty and people waiting on weather they are getting a pay rise or bonus (which is un likely) they may have to wait and see if they can afford to go, with most pay reviews happening end of April, what good is it putting the price up after 2m? I'm afraid people running the club have no idea what is like for normal working people. This will be self defeating in the end, people who may have bought a season ticket later, won't now. As for match day prices next year, £30 for lower south and north is to much. I will be buying my ticket over the phone 2m even though that will cost more??!! I'm lucky I know I can afford it now, not everyone is so lucky.

One other point - in comparison to other years we have NOT been given as long to renew ... just a few weeks. Renewals were issued later than normal (presumably due to poor performances) but the deadlines were the same.

The tone from Clegg is very harsh and IMO unacceptable.

I'm dismayed by the attitude of some on here that it's a simple matter of making your mind up and paying up. No way is that the case for many, many people. For those either too wealthy to worry about it, or with their heads up their backsides for the past three or four years, these are extraordinarily tough times for most families, who have watched their financial situations deteriorate massively, at the same time as Prem and Championship players worry about what to do with all their money.

The harsh tone coming out of Portman Road today is, to my mind, completely out of step with the needs of fans. Season ticket deadlines were almost traditionally put back under the old regime, who seemed to much better understand that many supporters needed as much time as they can to be happy that they can afford their seats.

The club attitude suddenly seems to be "if you can't afford it, then we don't need you as a supporter" - whatever one thinks of that personally, it would be difficult to deny that this is a high risk strategy for a club that has underperformed for half a decade and, despite the arrival of a fine new manager, still has one hell of a mountain to climb to get promoted.

I'd say ITFC needs all the fans it can get. Playing hardball with supporters is not the way to win friends.

The cynic in me suggests the club know that a few of our bigger names will announce they aren't signing new deals next week so they want to encourage as many renewals back before that point as some who would inevitably delay if the deadline was extended may have a change of heart.

Wakey Wakey everyone, it's time to get out of bed & smell the coffee.....

We're all operating (whether we like it or not) in a Capitalist, market economy.
Clegg is not interested in fan "loyalty" he's interested in profit. He doesn't care if there are fans struggling to pay or renew on time, his bottom line is to screw fans for the maximum he can get away with.
Look at the outfit he's left to come here from, the BOA, what about their fair pricing for the olympics? You're having a laugh, hundreds of pounds for seats at the better events. The only cheapies are at things like the first round of the ping pong competiton etc.

No, while fans continue to pay he'll continue to screw you. I renewed by the way but this will be the last time if we're not at least in the play offs in May 2012. It's a market, as Cleggo knows and I'll be shopping elsewhere if the product don't improve next season. I'll still get my fill of football it'll be local league stuff instead. Less travelling and less costly.......

Cleggo's a market trader, if you don't like his product don't buy it, simples!

BTW, if you're unaware of todays cut off deadline then your commitment to the club has to be questioned? Even my mother, who's never attended a game in her life, knows nothing about footy and hasn't a clue, on Monday asked me if I'd renewed because I ought to as the deadline was Friday (she'd read it in the paper). If you miss the deadline you're a dork, simples!!

Do you get more time to renew your car insurance by ---- NO
Dou they extend the date by which you have to pay for a holiday ---- NO
Do they extend the date your car MOT runs out ---- NO

Then why should they extend the Early Bird Deadline?????

dugoutdave added 10:35 - Apr 15
have to back those who agree that a deadline's as dead line. If they moved it there would still be people asking for longer. At the end of the day the club announced the deadline date and all true fans will have taken note of it and decided by then whether they can afford it or indeed if they wanted it. I appreciate that its not an easy decision for those who have some doubts regarding finances and jobs etc but in any industry you have to have some deadlines so you know where you stand and can plan for the future. My son put it well ; you dont write to Kelloggs asking them to extend their competition deadline cos you haven't finished the box of coco-pops

Hmmm I wonder why so many player deals have fallen through since Clegg took over... ? All he had to say was remind people that the deadline was approaching instead he scores a PR own goal.

Tractorog added 11:32 - Apr 15
Its not the deadline that is the problem it is the way it is communicated.

Absolutely spot on Tractorog - Cleggs communication 'skills' really are appalling!

After the dross fans have had to endure over the last few seasons a little humility might be in order from him, but no!

Your words Mr Clegg,“I see no reason why Ipswich cannot be where Norwich are now in 12 months' time. Since Paul Jewell came in as manager we have averaged 1.65 points a game against 1.10 previously and this bodes well for the future.”

Do the maths Mr Clegg, to get where Norwich currently are takes 1.76 points per game, and at 1.65 points per game would only place us in 6th palce, and we have actually got 1.37 points per game so far. Looking at stats from previous seasons, to be top you need 2.03 p/game, and 6th place needs 1.58p/game whereas ITFC have only had 1.43p/game - Goals means points Mr Clegg - make sure you bag a couple of goal scorers over the summer Mr Clegg or I can see you exiting just as the Olympic games are opening - maybe they'd give you a job on the gravy train again!

well done my tough guy, obviously we have a long waiting list of potential season ticket holders, given that we only had 17k on tuesday night and the prices have gone up, clegg would be better off showing some flexibility rather than p!ssing off the punters (again)

BlueVelvet added 13:15 - Apr 15
I queued at the club this morning, doors opened at 9am and there was one person on the desk - so much for customer is king - if it were my business I would ahve opened early and greeted my customers - Mr Clegg, do you know where the ticket office is?

Non Negotiable my bottom - you should be encouraging season ticket holders - we are not players agents you know, you seem to run your business on the supply and demand model - except the supply of season tickets is high and the demand is low. You haven't clue Mr Clegg!

stringtheory added 13:54 - Apr 15
hmm -an absolute gift from heaven for the Clegg knockers. Now they can cite him as the reason for not renewing, rather than the truth that they are FAIR-WEATHER supporters who will come sneaking back in when we reach better times. if you're a supporter and can afford to GET YOUR MONEY OUT. If not, stop wining and go support Man U. And by the way, if you think the deadline is Clegg's idea alone you are stupid and not safe to cross the road alone let alone go to a football match.
