Norris Players' Player of the Year
Norris Players' Player of the Year
Wednesday, 4th May 2011 08:47

Skipper David Norris won the Players’ Player of the Year award at last night’s End of Season Dinner at Milsoms Kesgrave Hall. The 30-year-old midfielder, who is Town's top scorer on 11, beat central defender Gareth McAuley by one vote.

Norris and McAuley could both leave the club over the summer as they are yet to sign new contracts. Talks continued with the Blues captain last week with Portsmouth and a number of other clubs - including Wigan who have again been linked today - understood to be interested in signing him on a Bosman deal in the close season. The former Plymouth man wants a three-year contract, while Town were only willing to offer two further seasons.

Norris said he was very pleased to pick up the gong: "It's a great award to win and obviously I'm delighted.

"To get the vote from your fellow players always makes it special."

Manager Paul Jewell says the club have agreed to McAuley’s agent’s terms but the Northern Irishman is yet to put pen to paper with reports over the weekend claiming that the 31-year-old would join SPL giants Rangers at the end of the season.

Last night’s dinner saw midfielder-turned-full-back Carlos Edwards win the John Kerridge Memorial Trophy for the club’s most improved player, while Josh Carson, who won the Dale Roberts Trophy for the Academy Player of the Year at the weekend, picked up the Harold Smith Trophy for the academy's most improved player.

Connor Wickham won the Goal of the Season award for his mazy dribble and then deft finish against Sheffield United and Gareth McAuley won the Customers, Boxholders and Sponsors' Player of the Season.

The evening also saw Town's 1981 UEFA Cup-winning duo Arnold Muhren and Frans Thijssen hold a question and answer session with Bryan Hamilton, John Wark, Steve McCall and Russell Osman subsequently joining them.

Was a good choice to be fair. Top goal scorer, and some decent performances.

obviously the players know more about the game than a large number of empty vessels on this site.(judging by a number of comments on Norris)

Mostly a solid performer ... if sold we will need to replace with a 10/15 goal scorer midfielder, as we currently dnt have another one!

So the various player of the year awards have gone to Bullard, Norris and McAuley. I would agree that these have been our three most consistently strong performers (during the time each has been here) this year. 11 goals from Norris is the sort of return from midfield we've not seen since the Royle era (and in fact Tommy Miller took the penatlies too).

However there is a serious possibility that none of the three will be at Town next year. That is worrying to be honest, at a time when we are all trying to be optimistic (especially in the context of Norwich's promotion).

Here's to Big Fat Paul bringing in some exciting additions, and hopefully keeping as many of these three as possible...

fair point HighgateBlue -- take those 3 out and we are ntg more than a lower mid table team --- PJ has to be on the phone non-stop for the next month otherwise it ll be another drab season of ntg

Well done Mr Norris a good seasons return ,now please sign your contract offer or say your intentions to allow the club to move on .
S6blue to be fair when Mac and Norris have been playing we have hardly been anything more than a mid table team ? Perhaps we need a real shake up of personel to get the desired hunger to win those extra points or get those extra goals to see us really contend even if we lose good individuals ?

I would hardly blame Mac for leaving at his stage of his career to be challenging for silverware and playing in Europe but Norris going to Pompey for a three year deal to be playing in a struggling financially challeged side ,i dont get .

I think he's done ok for Town this season and the goals he has scored has obviously contributed to this award, he always strikes me as being a bit on the small side for a midfielder. I thinks it's more of a case of other players around him playing generally worse - so step up the rest of you!

Ha! Most improved player for 32-year-old Carlos Edwards. He's been splendid this season, but that's v amusing. I would have thought Lee Martin might have been a more logical choice.

superfranz but Martin only came back Jan then missed 5 games through suspension so not ideal. I think Carlos whist making admited mistakes has taken his new role, improved and shown more passion than many of these players. Glad to see players supporting their captain, shows they believe in him even if the fans dont!

Blue lady- Martin had been at the club longer than Bullard so I presume you don't agree with Bullard voted supporters of the season . I for one didn't agree with someone who is not even an Ipswich asset being voted ITFC supporters player of the season. But I think Martin improved more than Edwards.

Norris is nothing but a scuffler, not a player we need to get out of this division. A Shaun Derry type, accompanied by two creative midfielder's is what we need. We have one, & he is a loan player...

Well done norris and g.mac for first and second now let the club and the supporters that pay your wages and looked after you for the past few years know your plans for next year.

I would agree with this choise much more than the fans one... To be fair to Bullard he did a lot for us for the 16 games he played but this is only 1/3 of tha season and he is on loan only. You cannot judge on 1/3 of the season only. It is unfair to all the other players who played for 46 matches. And Norris is our top scorer with not even being a striker, which talks a lot. I will be really happy if Norris and MacAuley stay with us!

Congrats Chuck and G-Mac.
Both have been key players for us this season.

village-blue i dont disagree with Bullard winning but i personally did not vote for him. I think Martin has come a long way from the player we knew he was before, but he came back firing on all cylinders and remained constant so not sure Jewell will have necessarily seen the improvement that we have!

Was Jimmy included in the vote or was this just a vote for permanent ITFC players?

I hope Edwards isn't our first choice right back next season..dodgy to say the least..would much rather see Peters in that role..preferably someone who can defend though.

The Terry Butcher Lavatory Cleaners, Soil Pipe Rodders and Rodent Destroyers (Wasps Nests A Speciality) Own Goal by a Wally in a Head Bandage Award went to Delaney, then.

Believe I may have seen GMac walking home this morning at about 6:30am! Obviously another good performance by him again! Actually, would imagine that last night would have seen the best performance by an ITFC team on a Tuesday night all season.

Deserves it after a good season. Without his goals we could still be fighting relegation.

Sums up this season when "headless chicken" wins this award and as for this league being so competitive - competitive my ar@ - Norwich come up and with a few changes get promoted at the first ask with the other two promoted teams from league 1 Leeds and Millwall not far away - what's needed is a decent manager...
