Smith Looking for Championship Football
Smith Looking for Championship Football

Tottenham right-back Adam Smith says he wants to play Championship football next season having spent a successful loan spell at League One Bournemouth during 2010/11. As TWTD reported in March, Town, Reading and Burnley are all interested in signing the 20-year-old this summer.

Smith, who has now been offered a new deal by Spurs, says he feels he needs to step up to Championship level either on loan or on a permanent basis at this stage of his career, despite the Cherries offering him a deal: "I've done League Two [with Torquay] and League One, so I do feel that next season is the right time for me to test myself at the next level, which is the Championship.

"I think that I can play at that level and hopefully I can replicate the form that I showed for Bournemouth last year in the Championship, so I'm definitely looking at that level next season.

"There have been League One and Championship clubs showing interest and making offers for me, so I'll see what is on the table when I come back off holiday and make the decision what is best for me then.

"I'm 20 now and I feel that I've matured a bit having gone out on loan a few times and at the end of the day it is a short career in football, so I want to play as many first-team games and go as far as I can in the game.

"I feel that next season is a big one for me and this decision about staying at Spurs or moving elsewhere is an important one in that sense."

Meanwhile, Colchester say they have received no bids from Town or Reading for central defender Magnus Okuonghae, who was linked with both clubs earlier in the month.

Would be very happy to sign this guy.
Anyone spot the difference in attitude? The 'I just want to play football' rather than the 'I want to be at a big club whether I get any game time or not'.

Come to us and you are guaranteed championship football for as long as you like.

Jewell, sell Wickham and invest the cash on 3 or 4 quality signings to get us out of this god forsaken league. You have already bought three washed up players who nobody else wanted. Spend the Wickham cash on some quality !!!!!

Whoppit, if you think Chopra is washed up and passed it you are so wrong! Most clubs in the Champ would kill for him in their side, I know it was some time ago now but Wark Venus Mowbray and Magilton-to name a few- all could have been given that label when they came (or came back in Warks case)How about giving them a chance

If we do sign Smith I hope it is on a permanent deal rather than a loan.

> this god forsaken league

Isn't the Championship the 4th best attended league in Europe?

> three washed up players who nobody else wanted.

Chopra and Ellington are both in their 20s and have scored 215 league goals between them.

Three washed up players nobody else wanted?

I never really understand this kind of comment. After all its only possible for a player to sign for one club, regardless of how many other clubs may or may not have been interested?

Do you expect other clubs to come out and say ' we tried to sign this player too, but we weren't good enough for them!!' How often do we see Clegg get slated for trying to sign players and them going elsewhere, for example Charlie Austin.

Ellington might not have had the best couple of seasons, but he has proven before that he can be prolific at this level and I think that PJ obviously believes he can bring this out of him again. If theres even a slight possibility this happens, then on a free I think its well worth a punt.

Ingimarsson brings experience, yes he's old now, but I think we miss that experienced head which I don't think we've really had since De Vos.

Chopra, Fantastic signing in my opinion at a bargain price, has done it before and still has time before he hits his prime.

I don't see why you'd slate these signings before they have the chance to kick a ball this season. Until Paul Jewell finishes his signing plans then you don't even know how integral a part these players will play, so I think lets get behind the signings, and the manager,as this is a positive summer for once.

My first post :)

Hi everyone, stop responding to whoppit. He or she, has been on this message board for at least 18 months and only writes negative posts in the hope that people will respond to them.

Lets ALL try and ignore his posts in the hope that he will get board and go away.

whoppit I AGREE.
trouble is to many supporters on this sight live in cloud cuckoo land. Jewel is putting a team together to stay in the championship. They are all has beens released by other clubs. Even preston had no intrest in the last one and no one else had any interest in chopra, Ingo was released as not good enough by a team who are genuinely looking for promotion..
Anyway if this lad wants championship football he will go to a big club.Reading peterborough etc.

We now need midfielders to replace the departure of Norris and Bullard, the strike force seem up to scratch at the moment of several combinations !!!!!

Preston wanted ellington, and i've read rumours that bristol city did as well, and as for the other two we don't know if there was other interest. And saying that buying players out of contract or "not wanted" at their old club makes them washed up or poor players.... well a bit silly if you ask me. That would make pompey and wba fools for signing norris and mcauley then...and most other free agent signings. And sometimes players simply need a new lease of live, a fresh chance. Ellington was excellent for jewell before, might be it again. Have a little faith... Jewell is building a squad that i believe is gonna make us proud!

Sounds young and hungry to play football - That is exactly the type of players we are after, PJ is correct when he says its quality not quantity that he wants, and what he means by quality is a good player with either experience or potential with the right character.

I have no idea who Smith is hopefully PJ does and will make the right decision but haven't we got a young lad called O'Connor who can play on the left. Where is he everytime he appeared he looked pretty effective to me and hungry to play - really good in the snow.

Whoppit - F**K OFF

sign on the dotted line then... he is just the sort of young hungry player we need, and a proper right-back!
