Jewell Happy But Not Satisfied
Jewell Happy But Not Satisfied
Saturday, 6th Aug 2011 17:49

Town manager Paul Jewell was happy but not satisfied after his side got their season off to the perfect start with a 3-0 victory at Bristol City which took them to the top of the Championship. The Blues boss says he’s not getting carried away by one victory, which was watched by owner and chairman Marcus Evans.

Jewell said: “We’re happy, we’re never satisfied. I think when you become satisfied, you become a bit comfortable.

“We’re delighted, it’s a great start for us, but that’s all it is. We’re keeping our feet firmly on the ground.

“It was a terrific turn-out of 1,700 fans, which was great, and it’s a start of a very long and arduous season, and we’ve got off to a good start.”

The Liverpudlian believes the 4-5-1 formation was the key to the victory: “I thought our system worked, I thought the three midfield players worked and Chopra was always a threat.

“I felt we were the best team for the first 20 minutes and then we scored the goal. I think over the years, and I think it’s been a trait of ours not having a winning team over the last few years, took back step and they came back into the game a little bit.

“We saw it out to half-time, then in the second half, once we got the second goal and then the third goal went in it was game over.

“As a manager you’re always looking for more, but I’m pleased with the effort, not just the effort of the XI but also the effort everyone’s put in since we came back.”

Bristol City boss Keith Millen was shocked by the result and also the goals his side gave away: “I didn’t see that one coming today. We did a lot of good work. I was pleased with the lads and their conditioning and I was expecting a better result and performance.

“When you look at the game, when you give three goals away like we did, it doesn’t matter how you do when you’re in possession.

“The manner of the three goals we conceded isn’t acceptable and we’ve got to put that right. Ipswich didn’t have to do too much to score the goals.”

Yes it was 4-5-1 but it turned into 4-3-3 and 4-4-2 on many occasions with Bowyer often popping up in the Bristol penalty area. Martin spent time as a raider as did Leadbitter. 4-5-1 does not mean we are defensive. Today we were well drilled and turned defence into attack very well. As PJ has said we are not the finished article but the lads played for the Club today and it looks a happy band as reflected in the goal celebrations and the appreciation of our support. Shame about Delaneys injury just hope it is not too serious.

Great win, and great turnout from us! Really enjoyed my day out to Bristol, the great thing was there were some top performances across the filed, Cresswell, Martin, Leadbitter in particular! We are top of the league we are top of the league!

A gr8 result but it wasnt a 3-0 drubbing,a flattering result even tho some decent football was played at times. The 1st and 3rd goals wud not even hav been chances last season as no one wud hav bothered to run,Chopra already proving invaluable at running channels and chasing balls over the top. The inspired pick for me tho was Kennedy-tremendous,im afraid Hyam cud never turn in a display that good, breaking up play well and the added bonus of good distribution and a proper footballing brain.I dont think Bristol are a bad side so credit to us for taking our limited chances and just about standing firm at the back where a commanding centre half is still a must. All the debutants did well,Cresswell was tidy,Bowyer involved,E Thomas 4me the most disappointing but with a hit and miss reputation i expect some explosive performances from him. As optimistic as ive felt for half a dozen yrs.

Great result, looking forward to playing at home to Hull and if the squad changes at all now! Maybe some business involving Bullard should be played on the touchline? ;)

Great start of the season! Although we have to be careful not to be carried away by the result, I have a very good feeling with the current team, they look really confident at the moment. :)

Can we have a word with the FA and get them to end the league today. Ipswich promoted as champions southampton also going up and Leeds relegated that would be just perfect. Great result Town, can't wait for saturday!

DOWN BOY! Got this dog called expectation. Black Labrador, very willing to please. Always hungry for tit-bits. Not fussy about what he eats, he once swallowed a schoolboy and burped out a 10m striker. A few months ago he swallowed a chop, can't wait to see what comes up from that. With all dogs you love em to bits but you can guarantee they will invent new ways to let you down. They will curl one down in your neighbours paddling pool, just before the sell on clause kicks in. For now, rarely, I am quite pleased with my pooch. He is doing as he is told and I have high hopes for him. Think he has that 'fancy a bit of hull howlin bitch' in his eyes....

What a great day out! Ipswich looked pretty bloomin' good and the Town fans were excellent. Cresswell has clearly got 'balls of steel' and Stockdale looked the best bet between the sticks for many a year. And had a bet on the score and Chops to bag the first one - QUALITY! Keep calm and carry on...

not 1 player had a bad game today, was a good all round performance. chepstowblue, what game were you at? jet had a very good game. ok, he didnt go past players on too many occasions but then hes not actually an out & out winger(just sum1 who can play there). but you tell me, how many passes from him went to an opponent in the time he was on the pitch. i can tell you, just 1, his passing was superb, including the defence splitting pass to set up martin for the 2nd goal. yes id like to see him run past people more but if he can continue to pass that way ill be more than happy.

What a result. Been keeping an eye on BBC Sport as on holiday in Nashville Tennessee.
I think I had better stay here longer if this is the results we are going to have, unless its the Macus Evans away tee shirt I have been wearing all day.

brilliant.. i thought leadbitter ran the show today, kenedy, martin very good, stockdale when called upon and of course chopra! buzzing!!!! we seriously need a commanding centre half though, that will head those balls that come into our box.. Now for hull, come on!!
