Jewell Disappointed With Cup Exit
Jewell Disappointed With Cup Exit
Tuesday, 9th Aug 2011 23:01

Blues boss Paul Jewell was disappointed to see his side crash out of the Carling Cup at the first round stage as Northampton left Portman Road with a 2-1 victory. The Town manager was unhappy that his much-changed team failed to deliver and hopes to add to his squad before the end of the week.

Jewell said: “I’m obviously disappointed to lose the game. We obviously made a lot of changes and we were stretched across the back with Ívar Ingimarsson getting injured in training yesterday.

“We’re very disappointed that we didn’t get through. I guess that if Michael Chopra was playing tonight I think we would have had a couple of goals as there were plenty of balls flashing across the box, but it just shows that we our squad isn’t as strong in depth as we’d like it to be.”

The Town boss dismissed suggestions that nine changes to the side which won at Bristol City was too many: “I think that the team we had out there was well good enough to get a result today on paper but having said that I have to give credit to Northampton, I thought they were excellent.

“We had plenty of opportunities to get a second goal. I don’t think we had chance after chance but we had situation after situation where the ball’s flashed across the box or we’ve got a two-v-one situation and we don’t make the most of it.

“We’re not clinical enough in either box, I must have said that 20 times last year. The lads up front are decent players but there were decent balls going across the box and I want them to get two or three goals and give me a problem.

“It’s not just the front players, by the way, the whole Ipswich thing — we’re nice. We win one game, lose one, draw one, win one. I wanted to give them an opportunity tonight to show what they can do in front of 9,000, a great crowd again, and we haven’t done ourselves justice.”

There were a few players who impressed their manager: “I thought Jack Ainsley did OK, better than OK.

“I thought JET did OK, I thought he showed he’s going to be a threat, although he’s not 100% fit, but you can see he’s a talent.

“I thought Cressy did well. But too many players didn’t come up to the mark today and it’s a pity for them and a pity for us because we got beaten.”

Ingimarsson has a recurrence of the thigh strain he suffered with in pre-season and is a doubt for the weekend.

Jewell says the deal to sign Blackburn’s Keith Andrews isn’t yet done, contrary to reports elsewhere but confirmed that as reported by TWTD this afternoon the Irishman is at the club: “Keith Andrews is here and we’re speaking to him and we’re trying to get a deal together so he’ll become our player, but it’s not done yet.

“That would be a loan until the end of the season. That’s not a done deal, we’re trying to do it and if things go well over the next 24 hours, hopefully, he’ll be ours."

The Blues boss also has his sights on a central defender with an offer having been tabled but Town aren't the only club targeting him: “I think there are about four clubs, including a couple of Premier League clubs in for him as well, so that’s where we are.”

The Blues boss refused to confirm or deny whether that player is Liverpool’s Daniel Ayala: “I’m not going to comment on speculation.”

Northampton boss Gary Johnson was delighted with his side’s victory, which he felt was deserved: “I love coming here. We won here with Yeovil a few years ago. It’s a great result for us early doors. I don’t think too many people gave us too much of a chance.

“But we had faith in our philosophy and I don’t think anyone can complain about the way we played. We tried to play some football, some really good combination football like Ipswich play and we were very proud to have mixed it with a good football team by playing football."

For me the team sheet told the story of how another cup run sits in the priorities this year - and i'm not surprised/disappointed either

i'm sure the quote from PJ was wanting to have big games like Arsenal every week - ie get to the Premiership NOT hope for another cup run for a one off game.
northampton wanted it more - and shamefully 399 fans made an awful lot more noise than 9000...........

2 hours each way to sit in almost silence (1 kid was making more noise shouting at Away fans to shut up than the rest of the crown around her FFS) guess its my own fault for sitting in the wrong place?

think i'll stick to away matches................

Paul jewell said last week he don't like play 4-4-2 at home and why we play 4-4-2 last night and I thinks when we score that goal 1st we was Playing football easy and when northampton score that goal before half time
And in the secdon half Ipswich was poor and alb he playing bad and peters play bad too. Scotland was not in the game last night and I don't know why shane o' connor was not playing or not on the bench and I thinks northampton Was the better in the secdon half . So come on Ipswich let hammer hull on saturday

Johnson said it right: "Combination football." That's about right.

Forgotten already. Roll on, Saturday.

Absolute tosh from PJ. How can anybody shine in a bodged up team. He's happy to be out. He getting paid to get promoted. He is beginning to sound like Keane with the non-stop search for just 2 more players.

Jewell did exactly the right thing with his team selection imo. I wasnt able to see the match tonight and appreciate it is only the one match but if the likes of Peters, Smith and the only frindge players can't get it togther against a league 2 outfit then whats the point in keeping them as part of a team with Premiership aspirations.

Maybe a bit harsh but we have to get real and we need championship league squad cover if we are going to do anything this season!!!!!!!!

To those suggesting that pj should have played chopra,How would you have been if chopra had played in a cup that doesnt even carry a place in europe any more that puts him out for a month or longer now we go into the game against hull with a fully fit and rested (other than training) core sqad

Wot a load of tosh that game was. Can't we do well in the cup. We need defenders badly & a goal kepper ALB no good & Cody Cooper ok but not old enough yet. Sort it out PJ fed up of us Doing Sh*t & not going up. Our fans don't help get behind ipswich then we will do well. Just can't see us going up till defense sorted. We need to buy not get loan players 9000 something fans ok but common we can do better. So wen we got A RB CB GK CM & Keith andrews I will be happy

Tonight showed me that we must get another decent Goalkeeper in case Stockdale is suddenly recalled and also another quality young Striker (with pace) I don't believe we would ever score many goals with Scotland and Ellington up front as they are far too slow, I know that they were both really good a few years ago, but they do not inspire me at all now, I'm very disappointed that we did not have more quality players like Chopra and Bowyer on the bench in case they were needed, it would appear that Paul Jewell was not really serious about winning tonight, despite what he said before and after the game, I wish I had not wasted my time and money going tonight, I am however not desperately sad to be out of this competition, just a little less confident about the quality in depth of our squad, a win Saturday will restore my confidence no doubt.

Hull had a disappointing night too Ken... :-)

If PJ really wanted to win then the starting XI would have been stronger.

There's a lot of rubbish spouted on this site. Of course PJ cares, and he wanted some fringe players to show that they can step up. What it did prove, is that the likes of Peters, Smith, Scotland, Healy, Drury, Hyam are not good enough for the first team. It's a pity, because a run in this cup would have been a great place for these players to get some competitive games. Now they will be back on the bench or completely out of the picture, & it's no ones fault but their own.

Not bothered about result or cup run ,we had that last year want a good season in league . It just shows that a number of players fans have been calling for a go are not upto it and couldnt even beat a low league side ALB, Peters ,Healy,Drury ,Hyam at the moment . bring in some more experienced players and give the league a good push .
If we had selected the side we had on saturday we would be through but Pompey,Hull,Barnsley ,Derby etc all rested players with the same reult

It was disappointing that most of the fringe players didn't step up to the challenge, but Jewell was right to rest our star players, especially the older ones. How would we have been feeling if we had won but Chopra was stretched off for example? The league is our priority, simple as that. I think an early cup exit may help our league chances, as I don't recall Swansea, Norwich or QPR having a good cup run last year whereas we did and nearly got relegated!

Let's get Andrews and another player in and look forward to the Hull match. COYB!

Cannot understand why everyone is surprised, this is how we have played for most of the last 2 seasons, no craft, no punch and a collection of players who quite simply are distinctly average, take Chopra away and we have absolutely nothing up front, just think of the wages Scotland, Ellington and Priskin are on, be lucky if they get double figures between them we had better hope Chopra stays fit otherwise another season of non achievement.

bluelady added 08:29 - Aug 10
tractorboy2434 it wasnt just Chorpa we missed it was Kennedy, Bowyer etc etc, this team will get goals without Chopra but last night we did not play as a team just a bunch of individuals. Ellington showed how much of a better player he is than Scotland, whom the ball bounced off at every single touch, he wasted so many opportunities. Jewell has said he is after another striker so i think at least Scotland if not he and prisken will go.

Simply not good enough. I know a number of you are PJ fans and that's great. BUT 9,000 fans deserved better last night. Please don't spout rubbish such as 'PJ clearly didn't want a cup run'. How short peoples memory is - last year we were lapping this compeition up! Winning breads confidence - this was nothing short of an abysmal result - so at least be honest. Shocking.

We have known for a while that we have no strength in depth. Peters is not a right-back (in fact we don't have a RB at the club), Smith wasn't good enough for Colchester, Healy is average, Drury still has a lot to learn, whilst IMO ALB is one of the worst keepers in the Championship. Letting Fulop go without replacing is a mistake.

But the biggest error is at CB. PJ had all Summer to sort this out. He didn't. Perhaps he is poor at maths? If you let 3 CB's go and replace with one then you are asking for trouble and particularly if that one - Ívar Ingimarsson - is injury prone. In the final month or so of the season, Reading, Watford, Norwich, Swansea and Leicester all had a field day against us - so why hasn't PJ addresed it? There can be no excuse. PJ has to act and act NOW.

At least playing the fringe players, he did have chance to have a proper look at them, and he found out sooner than later they are not good enough !!!
When else can he play them,Hull, Southampton, FA cup. NO !!!!
I know how frustrating it was for supporters last night, but these things have to be tried, especially with no such reserve league this season ????
Now let us go for it on Sat. !!!!!!!!!!!!

The big positives are that Cresswell, JET and Ainsley look ready to play a big part in the first team this season. Martin looks set to follow on from his impressive end to last season. Another positive is that we dont have to worry about the distraction of League Cup which will help reduce injuries and allow us to focus on league. Its funny, despite not playing Priskins value to first team has risen!

Unfortunately I think Peters has had it, I cant see him getting any where near the first team. Same for Hyam, despite his early promise last season I cant see him getting much game time so a loan might be on the cards here.

Bad result but good game, PJ correct, we were capable of beating them despite changes. Too many missed chances and some dodgy defending for their goals. Lets hope we sign another decent keeper soon. Shame Jaime Peters had an awful game. Good promise from JET though.
